Is this the ultimate pleb filter?
everyone think it's a dumb action shit but it's actually moody as fuck and with a very cool atmosphere
>>
>>80391855

Blackhat even moreso.
>>
>>80391855
>>80391893

Agreed on both of these.

I like where this is going.
>>
>>80391855
Yeah it's great.

Most Mann films are like this... certainly most of his crime dramas. High art films disguised as cheesy crime flicks.

Other pleb filters:
Pain & Gain
Mortal Kombat
Spring Breakers
Starship Troopers
Irreversible
The Neon Demon

Kek starship troopers was anti meritocratic propaganda.

>>80391855
No, I'm a patrician of the highest tier and I say this movie is trash.
>>
>>80392094
I don't think so man. Verhoeven is kind of one of those guys beyond left and right. He kind of gleefully pushes on into the most ludicrous material and you could say there's a criticism but I think that's simplistic. It's like saying Spring Breakers is purely a criticism.

Personally I think Verhoeven, Mann, Noe, Korine, Refn, and Lynch are next level, beyond easy critiques.
>>
>>80392102
>>80392076
I just love the way he walks into the hospital at the end, and the movie just abruptly end while the music goes crescendo

It really show that Mann understood everything about adapting a famous franchise to movies, nobody cares about epic story arc and their conclusion etc, people just want cool episodic content, but put on string
>>
>>80392255
Yeah the movie is def more of a tone poem. I love that, how it seems more like just a little snippet of this fiction-world that washes over you as you pass through its window, and then it keeps rolling along on its way when the movie ends, like the ending is just you and the movie (as this entity) parting ways.
>>
>>80392046
>Mortal Kombat
Really though? The Resident Evil films, sure, maybe even Pompeii, but MK is low-tier PWSA.
>>
>>80391855
>it's actually moody as fuck and with a very cool atmosphere
If that's how you "critique" films, you are the pleb here, and you probably didn't even get Miaimi Vice and are just bandwaggoning to fit in.
>>
>>80392407
yeah pretty much
they'd have fucked it up if they had gone the way of "now live the ultimate adventure for Sonny and Tubbs" because nobody cares
>>
>>80392046
Adding to that list:

Bloodsport
Space Jam
Risky Business
Mulholland Dr.
Fast & the Furious franchise (especially Tokyo Drift)
Possession (1982)
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Enter the Void
>>
>>80392255
>It really show that Mann understood everything about adapting a famous franchise to movies

Well, it helps that he, y'know, wrote/produced the original TV show.
>>
>>80392515
Oh I bet you probably want it critiqued through the lens of race/class/sex/gender. How original and insightful.

There are much more substantial or metaphorically rich ways to attempt to discuss vibe and atmosphere and form but it's much more relevant to Mann than most of the more popular current critical tools usually used.
>>
>>80392578
I know but still, they could have totally fucked it up
instead I enjoyed that they didn't do an origin story, and also they didn't even keep the main character's look
why was Collin Farell having long hair and that stache?
>>
>>80392485

Mortal Kombat is infinitely superior to any of the Resident Evil films you drooling autist
>>
>>80391855
I actually really dug this movie. Mann is fucking great at crime dramas.
>>
>>80391855
The digital filming didn't look good. Felt like I was watching a beginning of a Mompov
>>
>>80392539
>they'd have fucked it up if they had gone the way of "now live the ultimate adventure for Sonny and Tubbs" because nobody cares

Yes!

This is the biggest mistake with all the recent adaptations. There's nothing wrong with taking a known entity/object and fucking around with it, but these newer movies usually always try to do the 'ultimate, most epic story' rather than a more passing, moody, slice-in-the-life-of riffing on it, which is so much richer and effective, and leaves so much more room to work in the future.

This is why Dredd was one of the only recent reboots that worked, as well as Mad Max: Fury Road. They tell one small story in the world or life of ___, not some ridiculous, epic attempt at THE story with the ULTIMATE VILLAIN and cities being leveled etc.
>>
>>80392756
>Mann is fucking great at crime dramas.

He's the master.
>>
>>80392863
>Went to see what he's done recently
>Very very little

Oh god why,
>>
>>80392959
Yeah I wish he'd do one more crime drama at least.

There are so many actors he could use, music I could imagine him using.

I love how he doesn't necessarily use the coolest music you'd predict, either, but manages to coax a moody ambient effect out of some of the cheesiest pop and rock of the present time. I really admire that ability.
>>
Thief is Mann's best. Prove me wrong
https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=YodcpMuqD68
>>
>>80392737
This is why the RE movies are pleb filters. (Except for Nemesis and Extinction, which are terrible.)
>>
>>80391855
>it's edgy like me
>>
>>80393050
I noticed he seemed to have a bit of a thing for Chris Cornell or maybe just Audioslave, at least for Collateral and Miami Vice. He used his/their music in a particular way for pretty specific scenes/mood. Dude has really good taste and feel for what works in contrast with the tone of a scene for sure.
>>
>>80393152
It's perfect.

Nobody does an ending like him either:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9CxgHdlo4s

(Shout out to Heat, Collateral, and Miami Vice too for their endings)
>>
>>80392775
mompov is quite frankly kino
>>
>>80393226
If anything, the feel I've gotten from Mann's stuff has been more emotional. Pretty opposite of "edgy".
>>
>>80393200
Exactly. That was a demonstration of a pleb filter working right there.
>>
I like the way mann uses digital cameras, the smoothest of the image makes it look so much more realistic.

I didn't really love the story of MV, but I think it's the best looking movie he's made.

Exactly, he can take even generic buttrock and use it in a way that's perfect for the scene and world of the film and you realize something 'cooler' would have actually been less cool or apt.

The correct answer is to realize both are great.

/tv/ haven't made film/tv charts in a while, have we?

I feel like our taste has evolved a lot since we used to. we didn't even have the concept of 'kino' then.

Like I see more praise now for stuff like what's listed here:
>>80392046
>>80392571

whereas before it was more typical millennial geekcore we'd consider reddit now.

I'd be curious to see what kinds of lists / charts were made now.
>>
>>80394270
This is a damn good idea. We need an updated /tv/ core list.
>>
>>80394488
Yeah.

I can imagine what new /tv/ kino canon looks like.

I might make some more specific, theme or aesthetic-based charts myself eventually.

That ending scene gets me everytime.
>>
>>80393460
This anon speaks the truth. Both are kino in their own way.
>>
>>80394270
It's honestly the opposite. When I first started going on /tv/ like 5 years ago it introduced me to a lot of great films, like the stuff mentioned in this thread. These days, 90% of the content that's actually /tv/-related (which is 50% of the board's content if we're being generous) is exactly the 'typical millennial geekcore' that you describe. (Though, tbqh, being completely dismissive of all those films is just as narrow-minded.)
>>
Sup Nosaj. Go OD on potatoes you greaseball.
>>
>>80394488
TDKR
Drive
The Neon Demon
lasagnacat
American Psycho
Eyes Wide Shut

Are probably some of the generally agreed canonical /tv/ picks at this point, some more seriously and some for the memes.

But additionally I feel like I see a lot of growing love for some of the things here >>80392046 >>80392571

A lot of anons also often mention The VVitch, Amadeus, John Wick, Collateral / Heat / Miami Vice / Thief, Twin Peaks, The Thing, Alien / Aliens, Terminator / T2, Halloween, Videodrome and some other Cronenberg, Inland Empire, Chungking Express, Suspiria, The Wicker Man (original), LOTR...
>>
>>80394634
Hm. I saw some good charts then that introduced me to a few things, but there was also a lot of fanboyism for Chloe Mortz type shit, Breaking Bad, much more comic movies (capeshit wasn't criticized as much yet), P.T. Anderson, etc etc. Take that 'essential fedoracore' chart floating around and that was basically /tv/'s taste. There was even a lot of love back then for Joss Whedon back then.

Nightcrawler (I think it's mediocre but it's def loved here)
The Shining
China Town

That's not exactly what he means I think.

I think it's more in the context of this board and online culture. Like, movies that actually a lot of ordinary people probably do (or seemingly should) like, but that more predictable geek culture types online write off as garbage when in fact there's something really sublime or aesthetic there.

I rewatch Miami Vice every couple of years and it always disappoints

the movie just isn't good enough. It is almost there but just not good enough. CF did a great job but the movie overall doesn't have the magic that he show sometimes had.

Breaking bad
Young pope
L O S T
Louies wierd weekends
Classic simlsons
Seinfeld and Curb
Breaking bad (?)
The shield
Columbo
>>

Yeah, I can mostly support this.

Twin Peaks belongs there. Probably Stranger Things too even if you don't like it.

Not a Mad Men fan myself, indifferent to Sopranos, and think Breaking Bad is overrated.
>>
>>80398341
Totally forgot about twin peaks, def belongs there. These arent my fav shows just the ones I see on tv the most.
>>
>>80398571
Yeah, agreed.

I feel like there was some Breaking Bad backlash for a moment, but we can't really deny that it was pretty big on /tv/.

Similarly, there's def a bit of GoT backlash here.

But that would be denying the popularity of LOST on /tv/, which was almost at the heart of it for a while.
>>
>>80398186
ok so you need Deadwood in your life

>>80398186
True Detective needs to be listed. Fuck it I'll make a list

Drama:
>Mad Men, True Detective, Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Americans, Justified, Luther

Comedy:
>Peep Show, Arrested Development, Spaced, Black Books, Seinfeld, News Radio, Shameless (both), Chapelle's Show, Benny Hill

Animated:
>Samurai Jack, Venture Bros, Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III, FLCL, Rick and Morty

"Reality" :
>Kitchen Nightmares (both), To catch a predator, It takes a thief

lmao
>>
>>80401265
I think it's massively overrated and think people will be indifferent in the long run.

Was just thinking it's something that is often pretty well-liked here.
>>
>>80393745
I saw it recently too, was dogshit. What was the point? Some young guy fucks a prossie, makes bad decisions, becomes pimp, lives happily ever after?
>>
>>80401816
I definitely don't think that "be a pimp" is a good moral to take away from it. It was more about giving things a shot, taking risks, accepting responsibility over the outcome, and how this process matures you.

I thought it was all done incredibly subtly and smartly.

But I think it's a pleb filter because it can look on the surface like some random teen movie about getting laid, but like a Mann film, there was a lot more going on, principally and most impressively its style.
