The "deepness" present in the original film is starkly ephemeral. Upon a rewatch you'll note just how much time is devoted to other things, e.g. an extended action sequence chasing a man with a gun, or following around a garbage truck.

ScarJo's flick with the extended running time can easily fit in the same 10 minutes the original kino dedicated to 'deep' topics such as AI, identity, self-image, consciousness etc.

I don't understand the whitewashing controversy at all. It's an American adaptation of the story, so it makes sense that the film version would reflect the demographics of the place it's being adapted for. It's already confirmed it has a multi-ethnic cast. Since the original was Japanese, literally the only way this film would not be whitewashed is if EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER was played an Asian. At that point, why do an American adaptation at all? These people are literally saying you cannot create Western adaptations of non-Western stories, since the only acceptable means to do so would be to exclude every Western-born person from making a meaningful contribution.

I've never read the manga, but I'm a huge fan of the original film and SAC and have decent enough hopes for the movie. The use of the original "Making of the Cyborg" theme was enough to sell me. And I fucking love ScarJo. I'm mostly basing this off her earlier roles though, I've avoided all the recent cape shit/Lucy.

Pacific Rim was too try hard to be Japanese anime genre live action and be 100% serious. Gunhed had more soul than PR.

Any adaption can be enjoyable if you view it was being how the filmmakers understand the original work (no shit). What I mean is that the new film will be how Americans view GitS and its various themes, which is inherently interesting from a sociological perspective because we are learning more about the American values than the original work's (Japanese) values. Really, any adaption of a foreign work is interesting because of this.

I am excited for this film. At first I was a bit nervous. I think any fan of the series would be. However, I want everyone who is unfamiliar with the series to understand just one, single thing: Aesthetic and authenticity are the most important parts of this film. Judging from the trailers, I will say they have done an outstanding job creating the world, characters, and technology in the manga and movies. As long as they can deliver on these aspects, the film is likely to be solid.
