AD really is /r/iamverysmart personified, and even worse with the narration calling attention to its jokes.
Meanwhile the internet has a self-congratulatory boner about how they're awesome for 'getting it' with this show while I find it mostly terrible and awkward. Some good jokes , sure, but not the modern classic people proclaim it be.

It came from an age before networks like FX and HBO made comedies that could get away with basically anything. The adult jokes were there but it had to be pretty clever about sneaking them in. And possibly the most important thing was that there was no laugh track.
