HYDROFLAX RETURN HYPE
>>
Last time: >>80345355
>>
>>80352541
sounds plausible
doesn't make it sound anything less than fucking terrible shite. what the fuck happened to based empty child Moffat
>>
why would he keep the first doctor down there? its bullshit made up by idiots on gallifrey base

he's keeping and repairing the hydroflax body in the basement, hence the banging on the door. only something of considerable strength could do that -- this also explains how nardole has his body back

nardole is the arc of the series. he's the reason the tardis can work whilst hydroflax is in the cellar, the reason river song gets saved, and the reason 12 regenerates

Hyped for Series 10. Steven Moffat has really pulled it out of the bag*

*his arse.
>>
>>80352589
>he's the reason the tardis can work whilst hydroflax is in the cellar
what does this even fucking mean
>>
>>80352588
He's still here. He made Series 9, Series 8 and Series 5. Remember that this is the majority opinion on /who/ and you are a minority so sit down and shut up.
>>
>>80352671
Apparently in Husbands the TARDIS couldnt take off with Hydroflax's head because the body was outside. So this dude's saying 12 has the robot suit locked in the TARDIS (for reasons????) and in order to get the TARDIS to take off, it needs the 'head' inside too (which is Nardole now because reasons???)
>>
I am a proud member of the Moffat Defense Force
>>
>>80352704
Oh yes sorry, i forgot that having the 'wrong' opinion meant i couldnt visit a forum, sorry m8 i'll be offerino
>>
>>80352671
nardole became part of hydroflax

they became one being

the tardis can't take off whilst one part of an entity is outside of the tardis (established in river song)

nardole is left in the tardis throughout most of s10. if nardole isn't in the tardis, it can't take off, because the hydroflax body is also in the tardis at the same time, hidden away - they register as one person, despite being separate.

nardole is literally the tardis key

there's one in the basement, probably.

Some fans really reaching for hilarious theories. There's a Mondas Cyberman locked in the basement.
>>
>>80352882
this is what happens, but believe the first doctor stuff if you want
>>
>>80352948
i don't believe either of those mental theories, m8

>>80352933
this sounds the most sensible
>>
What if 12 has locked a partially converted future Cyber12 up, in a bid to change the future ... and that ties into the finale. Nardole's "job" is to keep an eye on it.
>>
Cyber Danny Pink is locked in the basement with CyberBrig. Screenshot this.

>>

This is the only one i've heard that I can see happening. The first doctor one is absurd to say the least.
>>
>>80353172
I don't know where the "12 keeps X locked up" originates.

I mean, for all we know, it's Missy who's got something locked up - which 12, Bill and Nardole discover in the series.
>>
>>80352589
sorry m8 your wrong
bradley was on set
its happening
>>
why would he put a hydroflax in a basement? why wouldn't he just dismantle it? that doesn't make any sense either.
>>
>>80353301
no he wasn't. you're just setting other fans up for disappointment. if you want to know what it is, its the hydroflax body with a cyberman's head. nardole becomes a living tardis key
>>
The thing in the basement is one of the Hunters from Human Nature
>>
>>80353357
Exactly. And since the whole "TARDIS can't take off if X and Y" shit, I'm sure the Doctor's since found a workaround. He always does. I doubt Moffat even remembers he wrote that plot contrivance for that episode.
>>
>>80352589
>river song gets saved
That's it, I'm screencapping all these posts. There's no way in hell this is happening and the speculation is based on absolutely nothing.
>>
>>80353357
because in the 24 years he spent with river song, he came up with a plan to get her out of the library and stop her dying by using the technology in the hydroflax body. his task is to keep nardole alive
>>
>>80353373
no.
>>
moffat already gave river to big finish
if he was going to use her he wouldn't have
>>
>>80353448
the whole reason Moff did the 24 years thing was to have the cake and eat it (the last night... just happened to span 24 years) so he and fans got a 2-for-1 ending. Plus, he did it so the Doctor and River got closure to their story. She isn't gunna be saved after all that.

Because it was fun.

and it didn't have pointless drama, it was just the Doctor being the mysterious enigmatic "out figure he's good at being.

It was basically just a good Doctor episode, and the superhero plot stuff was fun and simple.

Capaldi is a great Doctor when they let him just be the fun.

Did Barrowman not realize this picture makes him look like some old gay pervert who hired male strippers at his birthday party, then took them home and had sex with them, sex that the strippers didn't enjoy and only did it because he has lots of money?
>>
>>80358818
It was sort of a meme from back before they were called memes.

Del Tarrant, the arrogant pilot in Blakes, says his family have been pilots since before the days of space travel. And there's a Gomer Pyle episode where they have to guard a naval airbase, and the arrogant ace pilot is named Captain Tarrant. Obviously Del's ancestor, therefore same universe.

I think people found other connections, but that was the main one.
>>
>>80358686
This boils down to the doctor whistling the theme to Andy Griffith at some point doesnt it?
>>
>>80358973
I doubt he cares seeing as he's been known as a young pervert before the gray. Strippers can have a daddy fetish. I understand it's quite common among the female variety.
>>
>>80358973
I think that was the look he was going for
>>
>>80359020
Nothing quite that solid, otherwise Andy Griffith would have a page on TARDIS Data Core.
>>
>>80358973

I'm pretty sure most people just connect Doctor Who to everything in America through Red Dwarf meeting Daleks and also meeting the Red Dwarf actors, one of whom appeared as himself on an American show, or something like that? You can get almost anywhere with enough degrees of separation, but that's less fun.
>>
>>80359068
It's just that I've witnessed this IRL; was invited to the bachelor party of this rich old gay asian who's known for sleeping with everyone in town
>>
>>80359189
Wait, looking at the map… Who to Red Dwarf, but then that connects directly to both Star Trek and Angel, both of which connect up to the rest of the universe through the John Larroquette Show. I don't think I know any of those connections.

Also id think most straight men would prefer to keep a harem as to randoms because of the time involved.

They were just bad, nonsensical, historically inaccurate etc.
It's hard to pin point a specific problem but they likely all boil down to Moffat not giving a shit about researching anything.

Nonsense. If Moffat had researched the history of Gallifrey, he would have known that the architectural design of that barn was from at least 6 centuries later.

The idea that some Outsiders have basically a mid-20th-century English countryside lifestyle and tech is surely less outlandish, not more, than the ones we saw in the classic series, who were basically Adam Ant playing 18th century savages with Native American tech.

Can someone talk a bit about Tamsin, from the Big Finish audios, the EDAs?

I've just listened to her first two stories (Situation Vacant and Nevermore) and I'm having trouble getting a read on her :/

I'd like to like the companion but she's just feeling very bland, like a cipher, to me at the moment. 8 mentioned her in The Night of the Doctor so I assume she's memorable for him, but yeah, what's her deal?
>>
>>80365000
the spooky underwater base with the ghosts.

honestly that episode and it's follow up, I thought was one of the better Capaldi who stories.

also it had that neat electric guitar who theme, and the bootstrap paradox is a fun concept to mess around with
>>
>>80365166
Her deal is that she doesn't really fit with the Doctor, and that she's just a replacement for Lucie. And they both know it.

>>80364894
I always thought they look like if JNT had an actual budget to make the Vervoids.
>>
>>80365166
>8 mentioned her in The Night of the Doctor so I assume she's memorable for him
Well, really, 8 mentioned her because she's important to Nick Briggs and/or to Big Finish's sales…

But anyway, her deal is that she's really not the right companion for this Doctor, and she's not Lucie, but even knowing that I still find her pretty boring. I don't want to give away any spoilers in case you don't know where her story's going, but it seems like in any medium, when they create a companion for that kind of story, they have a really hard time writing the character to be interesting.
>>
>>80365307
>Her deal is that she doesn't really fit with the Doctor, and that she's just a replacement for Lucie. And they both know it.

Oh that's actually quite an interesting angle. I'll keep that more in mind when I listen to the next story.

>>

All the companions 8 lists (Charlie, C'rizz, Lucie, Tamsin, Molly) are companions that have died, or 8 thinks have died. Charley didn't actually die but the others did, and who knows what 8 thinks happened with The Girl Who Never Was.

But he's got other companions who died—like Gemma Griffin, or both versions of Sam Jones. And Kroton basically died in the same way Molly did. And there may be others that aren't coming to mind immediately because Eight has had a few zillion companions by this point.
>>
>>80365651

It seems like Peter doesn't go back to England that much anymore since he bought his house in LA. It seems like he used to be on six panel shows a week, and any show that could find a use for him, but since then, all I can think of is two voice jobs (Good Omens and the Fisher King) and a cameo (The World's End), and otherwise, he only works in America.
>>
>>80365620
>Danny Pink died because he didn't SPLINK
It's certain.
>>
>>80365685
Gemma is a BF companion, but she doesn't have a long run of adventures; she's mostly just referenced as a past companion. The others are from novels and comics.

And that's my point. Is it really just a coincidence that the list of dead companions that Nick Briggs gave Moffat to use happened to only include the ones that Nick had written for and/or that his company had lots of audios with to sell?
>>
>>80365803
I don't think Moffat was expecting viewers to go to a used book store and pay $30 for a wornout copy of Vampire Science to understand who Sam is.
>>
>>80365803
>and/or that his company had lots of audios with to sell

That's really broad and doesn't make much sense. Doctors tend to travel a lot with their companions, ergo the BF companions tend to have a lot of stories. Isn't it much more likely Moff listed the BF companions he remembered, or googeld and checked to be in sequence, since he's familiar with BF, rather than conspired with Briggs to subtly push people to buying audios that either Briggs had a hand in or...there are a lot of? I can't really parse your thought process here.
>>
>>80365722
>Not BF. Moff is a fan of BF but not that familiar with the comics or novels or anything.
Um… What?

He wrote about the EDA novels online. He used to hang out with half the writers on at least a weekly basis. He publicly high-fived Lawrence Miles for finally getting rid of Sam Jones in Interference. So I'm pretty sure he's familiar with Sam Jones from the EDAs.
>>
>>80365864

>He wrote about the EDA novels online.

He wrote about the VNAs online, not the EDAs

>He used to hang out with half the writers on at least a weekly basis.

>He publicly high-fived Lawrence Miles for finally getting rid of Sam Jones in Interference

>Moff is a fan of BF

>>
>>80365850
>Doctors tend to travel a lot with their companions, ergo the BF companions tend to have a lot of stories.
Except for Gemma and Samson Griffin, who don't have a lot of stories even though they traveled with the Doctor for years. There's no reason they wouldn't be important to the Doctor especially since Gemma was the first of his companions to die.

>>80365847
>I don't think Moffat was expecting viewers to go to a used book store and pay $30 for a wornout copy of Vampire Science to understand who Sam is.
I don't think Moffat was expecting viewers to give Big Finish $5 to understand who Charley was, either. I don't think he really cares either way.

>>80365930
>Literally untrue
Well, hey, maybe Andy Lane is wrong and some anonymous guy on 4chan knows everything that ever happened.

Also, this was obviously said by someone who's never heard of any novel with Sam Jones, right?
>Deep down you know Alien Bodies is the best thing you've ever written, and you know nothing you write is ever going to have the same impact again.
>>
>>80365803
Honestly, I don't think they had any ulterior motive other than to include 8 in the 50th anniversary celebration. Not every single facet of his run, but at least some of it to shut up idiots that only think the TV Movie is canon.

Still, if they did include those companions specifically for sales reasons...so what?
>>
>>80366046
I don't think Moffat had any ulterior motive. I doubt he even made the list; he probably just said, "Hey, Nick, if the Eighth Doctor was going to list his companions, who should he list?"

And I think Nick's ulterior motive is more likely just that these are the characters he's written for and knows and cares about, not actually a financial incentive. But either way, I honestly don't see a problem with it.

I was just saying that these aren't actually necessarily the companions most important to the Eighth Doctor, they're the companions most important to Nick Briggs. That's not a value judgment. It just means that when you ask "Why was Tamsin important enough to list but not Sam Jones", the answer isn't anything in-universe.
>>
>>80366000

His favourite 6 story is The Holy Terror, his favourite 8 story is The Chimes of Midnight, he's spoken at relative length about Big Finish before, he's explicitly stated he left loads of big gaps in 11's timeline to make it easier for Big Finish to place stories there, he's talked about being happy about handing River over to Big Finish, the list goes on and on.
>>
>>80366108
>I was just saying that these aren't actually necessarily the companions most important to the Eighth Doctor

Literally no one in the thread has said that. The theory discussed was about them being ones 8 believed died.
>>
>>80364894
Does the fisher king species have a gimmick? Are they inherently monsters or was the fisher king just a bad egg?
>>
>>80366108
Maybe it's because these were the companions that Paul McGann had pretty good knowledge of since he starred in audios with them. He'd probably be confused at saying "Sam, Fitz, Compassion, Anji, Trix" instead of character names he's previously said out loud.

>>80366137
The anon asking the question said:
>I assume she's memorable for him

Being dead makes her more memorable than, say, Mary Shelley. But it doesn't make her more memorable than, say, Gemma Griffin or Sam Jones.

Maybe the theory is just wrong. But I think it's more likely that it's right but incomplete: these are the ones among the dead ones who are meaningful to Nick Briggs.

They had to narrow the list down somehow or that scene would have taken up the entire episode. So why not do it that way?
>>
>>80366189

Anon who said memorable here - I am not engaged in this debate, I don't know why you're using my point.
>>
>>80366189

Your way makes no sense given that Charley is in it, and if you broaden it to "companions Briggs wrote plus uh, companions with a lot of stories but um, just in audio format" you've lost the plot and are reverse-engineering your theory clumsily.
>>
>>80366123
Your list sucks. Being able to name 2 old audios isn't much proof that you're a fan, especially since neither of them are particularly obscure. Of course he has a good professional relationship with Briggs/BF, and cares about what they do, but the idea that he follows their releases or gets home and listens to any audios is pretty absurd.

Imagining him reading any of the novels nowadays is almost equally as absurd, but at least we actually have reason to believe that he used to be invested in them.
>>
>>80366152
Really, all we know about his species is that he's one of them and he's a "warlord". That could mean he was a popular warlord of a warlike species, or a brutal warlord hated by his people, or an outcast who became a warlord by conquering other races because he'd been kicked off his own planet, or… The writers pretty much have it wide open.
>>
>>80366229

I didn't say he was a fan, I said he was familiar with BF. The fact that, oh I don't know, he's quite literally familiar with BF seems to prove my point. But go on strawmanning some bizarre point about Moff keeping up with the latest audios I guess. You do you. The fact that a giant Doctor Who fan like him listened to some audios in the wilderness years is just too crazy, right?
>>
>>80366213
You asked the question that we're trying to answer here. So it's relevant what the actual question was.

>>80366227
>Your way makes no sense given that Charley is in it
How? Nick Briggs wrote and directed a pretty good number of Charley stories, starting with her second one. So why does it make no sense to you that she'd be important to him than Gemma Griffin, who he never wrote for or directed?
>>
I remember back when he used to have a Twitter that he told all his followers to listen to some recent 5 audios at the time like Cobwebs.
>>
>>80366328

>>
>>80366391
What "conspiracy"? I don't get why anyone thinks there's something unsavory about the possibility that Nick Briggs would care more about, or better remember, the characters he's written for than about the ones he hasn't, much less why they're getting offended on his behalf about it.

Even if it was for sales, again, what's offensive about that?

The only reason I quoted you is… well, look, when somebody says "literally nobody said X" when somebody did say X, how would you answer that except by quoting X?

The DVD really should have a Director's Cut of that episode where the video pauses for 18 minutes in that middle of that line so there's time for a bad Paul McGann impersonator to list everyone who's even arguably been a companion of Eight in any medium.
>>
>>80367309
That sounds like a piece of art

That would be pretty straightforward to do. Cut after he says "Lucie, Tamsin, Molly" back to the face of Ohila. Isolate some of the ambient sounds of the scene and loop in the background. While the shot is on Ohila, have a McGann impersonator list whoever. Then cut back to McGann proper to say "friends, companions I've know, I salute you".

Maybe he's changed his mind on them not using the Gang? If they don't appear in S10, he's done with them, so why not?

Is it Vastra in the 1940s, or Churchill as a kid? If it's young Churchill, it could be before she met Jenny?

It's even funnier because he has like 3 minutes to live or something and then he just recites this massive list of names for no reason.

That could be fun.
>Susan, Ian, Barbara, John and Gillian—google it, or just go to the TARDIS Data Core, and why don't you just keep the page open, and don't vandalize it until after you've watched the rest of this episode, even though I know it's hard not to—Vicki, Steven, Hi-Fi, Katarina, Sara—that's Sara without an H—and maybe Bret, Dodo, Ben, Polly, George, Helen, …

Or, instead of being lazy, I could follow the link that you provided in the very post I was responding to…

So, not kid Churchill, but 21-year-old Churchill. In 1895, so she's already married to Jenny, and hanging out with Strax too.

So I'll bet she'll say, "I'm a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and I left my wife at home", and Churchill will say, "That's fine, if I had a wife I'd leave her at the altar".

There are a couple of good jokes in that episode. Just watch for those and try to ignore the whole plot and you should get through it.

So the other one must be how you say Pancakes in Russian, right?

That's in the English version of the Character Encyclopedia too.

Fun fact. Russian channels fucked up "cybermen" translation twice.

The first channels translated it just like "cyborgs"
And the other one assumed that it were only men for some reason, so it was literally Cyber men. It's hard to explain, but they were Cyber manlets. Like, no woman allowed for convertion.

I havent checked the recent broadcast of series 7, but I hope they fixed it already.
>>
>>80368525
I think they probably meant purely functional, not decorative, but I like your version better. After all, the most common criticism of utilitarianism is that it's impossible to actually do all of Bentham's utility calculations, but Adric is a smarty-pants.
