This. I just finished episode 9, and this is the best season of television that I have ever watched so far. Television has been pretty good at making dark, nihilistic series in recent years. Mad Men, the Sopranos, the Wire, etc. are all some of the best shows to ever air yet have had very dark themes with very little hope to be found in them. In contrast the endings of episodes 8 and 9 of the Young Pope made me feel a deep spiritual calm and joyfulness that seems to be much harder to portray on television. I'm starting episode 10 right now and will be back to visit the thread after, but so far this series has been beautiful in the truest sense of the word.

HBO really fucked up Westworld. It has potential but that first season really isn't helping.

The entire season was written but HBO wouldn't do a $100m budget. Fincher queened-it back to Netflix to do another hohum serial killer show.

'Westworld' is so creaky, and written off-the-cuff. It's not a flop---it made a footprint---but it's reputation is that it left viewers cold, and subhuman viewers who eat up 'GoT' were confused.

I know HBO has the 'Foundation' series on deck, from Jonathan Nolan, too iirc. Choosing Baby Nolan over Veteran Fincher longterm will be regretted.

It's a mistake to think that anything is going to fill the void of Game of Thrones, it's been a cultural phenomenon that we're not likely to see again for a while.

Besides HBO still kills it with their miniseries. The Night Of, Show Me A Hero, and The Young Pope were some of the highlights of 2016 television. I can't wait for their Lewis & Clark miniseries with Casey Affleck.
