One of the best scenes of the films is where Wormtongue starts crying in regret looking out at the Orc armies in Orthanc.

does anyone know what gandalf did for a living? was he really a NEET? how come none of the hobbits including bilbo seemed to have a job either?
>>

Gandalf's job was to observe the world and only intervene as necessary. As a timeless demi-god he didn't really need a day job.

Hobbits are mostly subsistence creatures; As long as they have a nice warm hole to live in and plenty of food to eat they could give a shit less.

I mean when you own your own house, there's no taxes, and your only bills are for food and drink (which you mostly grow yourself) it's not like you need to work that hard.
>>
>>80328946

More a tragic figure than a dick. Saruman, like his one-time peer Sauron, was obsessed with knowledge, he wanted to understand how and why the world was the way it was. But his great wisdom and learning lead him to arrogance, this lead him to fall.
>>
>>80328974

The Shire had a bureaucracy of some kind, and a Sheriff ("king"), so presumably there was some kind of taxation, too. But yes, the Shire is idyllic.
>>
>>80328906
>Manwë asked Olórin if he would go as the third messenger. Olórin said he was too weak and that he was afraid of Sauron; however, Manwë said that was all the more reason to go, and that he commanded Olórin to go as the third. Then Varda said "Not as the third."

This could have been a major factor in Saruman's jealousy. He was their leader, but it seems that Gandalf was held in a higher regard.
>>
What was Gandalf's plan to destroy the ring before Moria?
>>
>>80329055

The Sheriff was mostly a figure and their bureaucracy was mostly in place to keep track of parties who needed to give who gifts. It's the type of perfect socialism that could only exist in a fantasy world.

Very much so, the Valar knew Saruman's nature would lead him to temptation and the possibility of falling, they had no such doubts about Gandalf, going so far as to resurrect him when he died, a gesture of absolute trust that only Glorfindel the elf shared.

Indeed, though I do not agree with the second part of you post. Glorfindel, as all elves, has an immortal spirit that cannot leave this world. All elves go to the halls of Mandos when they die, and from there may be one day released back into the world. Though only Glorfindel was sent back to Middle earth.

Reincarnation was the norm for Elves, but only Glorfindel was "reincarnated" as himself, and sent back to middle earth specifically as the emissary of the Valar.

>I've heard this before, that elves reincarnate as someone else

Book of Lost Tales gives us:
>There [the Halls of Mandos] they waited in the darkness, dreaming of their past deeds, until such time as [Mandos] appointed when they might again be born into their children, and go forth to laugh and sing again.

And from the Silmarillion:
>But if they were slain or wasted in grief, they died not from the earth, and their spirits went back to the halls of Mandos, and there waited, days or years, even a thousand, according to the will of Mandos and their deserts. Thence they are recalled at length to freedom, either as spirits, taking form according to their own thought, as the lesser folk of the divine race; or else, it is said, they are at times re-born into their own children, and the ancient wisdom of their race does not perish or grow less.

In the books it is never explicitly stated how Gandalf was brought back, but here is what Tolkien had to say about it.
>He was sent by a mere prudent plan of the angelic Valar or governors; but Authority had taken up this plan and enlarged it, at the moment of its failure. 'Naked I was sent back - for a time, until my task is done'. Sent back by whom, and whence? Not by the 'gods' whose business is only with this embodied world and its time; for he passed 'out of thought and time'.

Bilbo was a fat, lazy, incompetent, bumbling buffoon. He was hired by Gandalf to be a burglar. He was greedy and selfish. "Gollum" was essentially a window into all Hobbits' souls. That's what they were, deep within. Ugly, conniving little monsters.

Look at the great accomplishments of Elves and Men - grand cities, magical wonders, great kingdoms and technology. Then look at what the Hobbits managed - a grain mill and some farms. They lived in caves. Though not as violent, they were in all other aspects as primitive as Orcs.

The only truly heroic Hobbit in all of the Lord of the Rings was Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. The rest only did their jobs because they were
manipulated by Istari. Orcs could have done great things if only the Istari would have used their privilege to manipulate them so.

could Peter Jackson be trusted to adapt The Sillmarillion after the shitfest that was the Hobbit?
>>
>>80332183
No.
>>
>>80332183
Silmarillion is impossible to adapt unless you'd want to make 10 movies each 2,5h long AT LEAST.

Quality aside, I don't think it's conceivable by today's cinema standards.

Not only in fantasy. I'm swedish and I remember when I was little and living in the deep forest communities and they were very much like that, only difference was the distance too things since the Shire seems a bit crowded and more self sustained then we, but that can be attributed to them supposedly having better farming lands.

You know, looking at the Silmarillion and the actual Lotr books, the movies are very disappointing.

I still love them, but it's like a shit tier interpretation of the actual written work.

As if Game of Thrones had gotten an adaptation in one season.

In terms of LOTR, some of the stuff in the books like Tom Bombadil were unnecessary, didn't add much and often clashed with the tone of more serious scenes.

You are not wrong. I personally also feel as though Tolkien was terrible at describing inner processes such as feeling in a more active way other than "And then he noticed that he was crying", but still

What I essentially mean is that the movies skip a lot of the motivational basics that need to be explained or showed.

They tried "show don't tell", but I still have to explain every time why Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas can run like madmen, because the movies don't bother to show it right or simply explain it.

The movies throw newcomers into a world that has no explanations as to why some very basic things work the way they do.

>timeless being of unknown origin and questionable approach to wordly affairs

Yeah, the movie version would have been awful most likely.
>>
>>80335223
Very easy to miss, aside from the gollum scene in the first film the Hobbit trilogy was series of completely unremarkable films.

The last one especially is something that is absolutely terrible to behold.

I don't get any real "tone" from the LotR books. As much as I love the books, they are almost more like Wikipedia entries of what happened. You don't see much character growth (except for the hobbits). You are just explained what happened and how people reacted.

I do think this is intentional. Written that way allows the reader to inject almost anything they want into the story to flesh it out. Tolkien himself said this, in the forward. He wanted anyone from anywhere to be able to pick up the book and fill it with themselves.
