Actual explanation is that he wants to be seen as the hero; beyond the memes, the real hero song is essentially what the Driver aspires to be. He wants to be a hero who saves the day and is a good person, but is stuck in a life of crime and violence. He puts on the mask because he is treating the world and events as if they were a movie, and he is the star.

That's in my opinion what makes it so relatable. This is unironically my favorite movie of all time and I've watched it over a dozen times. I've also cried at it at 3 different points. I wouldn't expect most people to hold my opinions, but I first saw this movie when I had just gotten my license and car at age 16 and something about it clicked with me. I would always go on night rides to unwind and loved driving and the movie was incredibly relatable because of that, I've never seen anything like it. The fact that I also live in an area that looks much like LA in the movie (with the green trees and blue skies, less of the city portions). I don't know. No other film has captured my attention as much though, probably never will because of the personal connection.
