Just finished this
Holy fuck so that's what I've been missing out on
A 2 hr music video from the 80s
>>80322618
memes aside, it's actually an unreal movie
Refn gets shit on a lot here but when things come together right, they come together RIGHT. God damn who else but NWR would think of an ultraviolent character-study car movie with synthwave soundtrack and a near-mute main character?
>>80322618
so what was up with him wearing the mask in that one scene?
>>80322757
>>80322749
The aesthetics and the soundtrack really are great together, Refn should make more, especially more subliminalanti Jew propaganda
>>80322782
sometimes in life, you just gotta wear a mask
that elevator scene. just so fucking brutal. why did he do it? why?
>>80322770
Originally it was supposed to be a Need 4 Speed adaptation with Hugh Jackman. But then came Goose and NWR
>silent black screen
>suddenly an overhead view of a brightly lit city in the night while nightcall by kavinsky plays
kino
Watched a month or so ago. Immediately realize who I should and shouldn't trust at my workplace.
>>80322834
He had nothing to lose. He had no name, no family, and lost the girl of his dreams
>>80322854
What did he mean by this?
>>80322834
He did it because that is who he really is, that is the first time he was truly himself in front of Irene, which is why she left horrified and all he could do was stare
>>80322782
The mask is physical manifestation *sniffs* of the confluence of the id and the superego *tugs at shirt* in the American hero and so on.
>>80322948
but who is the big Other?
>>80323018
Definitely not the literally big Jewish guy.
>>80322618
>3 nov
can't wait
>>80322618
This movie was SO mediocre... maybe it seemed better at time of release? I don't know.
>>80323085
The goose comes to take back the golden egg that the big Jew had been hording. Really makes you think
>>80323224
maybe it's because you watched it more than once?
>>80323263
Huh? I watched it once and basically forgot about it, except for real human bean.
>>80323400

>walking up to the door of a literal party of people

>drowning him ten feet from the crash
HURR DURR WHY DID HE WANT TO DISGUISE HIMSELF!?!
this movie made me watch that refn movie about the drugs and its in dutch or something
>>80324419
Same, it's called Pusher.
>>80323400
Watch it again. Hated it the first time I saw it before I even knew about this horrible place. Upon a second viewing years later I really was into it. The brutality of that dude who ices Cranston is never discussed. Now that you know what happens which is basically nothing you can appreciate the actual movie itself if that makes sense.
>>80322618
Best Refn movie coming through
Seriously it's like Drive for people who know why they actually watch these kinds of movies
flaws
>>80322941
But its not what he is, hes a criminal dreaming of being a hero.
This is why he works a stuntman, he wants to be the action star.
He does it since he realizes he lost her, that in this moment he has to act and leave her or she will get hurt.
>>80322795
>subliminal
>literally a scene where Ron Perlman talks about getting called a kike
you handle subtlety like Refn

This shit was terrible.

>>80324583
it was awful
Drive very much favors style over substance, but Only God Forgives was all style, and threadbare substance
Drive worked, Only God Forgives didn't
>>80327170
>Drive favors style over substance
t. someone who didn't get the movie
>>80327051
Reminder that HACKsaw ridge won an oscar
Fucking Hacksaw Ridge ffs. Also Stanely Kubrick never won one either
Academy awards don't matter, nominations count very little. All it means is "yeah we saw it and we thought it was cool"
Msm is fake
>>80327170
>Drive very much favors style over substance
Sort of.
Notice how you get a weird inward feeling watching Drive, and select other movies? As in, you can understand and follow the movie logically, but for some reason you feel things that seem out of place.
That's because they're deliberately crafted to be a visceral experience that stir emotions you don't quite understand.
Style over Substance is what you would call a movie like ''Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'' or ''The Hangover''
Drive is deeper than that and falls under the ''Visceral'' category.
>>80322618
any other good interesting crime movies like Drive and Nightcrawler ?
>>80327170
Both of those movies are good but it attracts very shallow people. Don't judge the movie based on these trendy faggots
Refn made a movie just for them, it's called Neon Demon
>>80327580
they'd be such a cute couple
>>80322618
When it came out /tv/ actually didn't want to believe it was a caper. The thought of Drive being a heist movie never popped into their thinning patchy heads
I can't blame the haters for thinking it's shit with fans like this
>>80326485
That scene was the first time I've ever heard of the word kyke. And I thought he said kite lol
That was back in October 2011.

At 5 I was convinced the world was about exploring and discovering things, beyond the gate, beyond the road, beyond the park, beyond the edge of town, beyond the forest etc.
At 10 I was convinced the world was about moving fast, being better, always going forward, the challenge of beating other people at the game.
At 15 I was convinced the world was about enjoyment, passion, squeezing the most sunlight out of every day, finding joy in breathing, smelling, tasting the world.
At 20 I was convinced the world was about change, fluidity, uprooting order, replacing established structure with the chaos of new ideas and inventions
At 25 I was convinced the world was about temperance, humility, the death of ego. That you needed to become small, to be large. That all things were in harmonious unity, and balance must be maintained.
At 30 I was convinced the world was about illusion. It's not about anything except what each individual believes it to be. That belief itself is not real, but a mixture of culture and inherited behavior, taught unconsciously and maintained, like a separate lifeform or organism, feeding off the human race, urging it to expand, to grow, to build, to persevere.
Your opinion will change over time, just be a good person, that should be a constant.
>>80329141
I'm older than 30. What now?
>>80329132
Well that's a good thing because Californians are the worst people on the entire planet. I would rather have ISIS as a state than California.

Actual explanation is that he wants to be seen as the hero; beyond the memes, the real hero song is essentially what the Driver aspires to be. He wants to be a hero who saves the day and is a good person, but is stuck in a life of crime and violence. He puts on the mask because he is treating the world and events as if they were a movie, and he is the star.
That's in my opinion what makes it so relatable. Yeah sure he's an autist, yadda yadda, but at the end of the day the movie is about a guy who dreams of becoming a hero/action star and succeeds in the end (bittersweetly that is). This is why he's a stuntman, why he dons the mask, why the Real Hero song plays in the background, the conversation about the shark with Benicio, and so on.
>>80330932
Also this is why so many real life autists like to copy the Driver and try to be like him; he is the quiet weirdo who wants to be a star and a hero and manages to do it. Characters like that that are actually relatable to similar people in real life are extraordinarily rare, only other example I can think of currently is Travis Bickle.
Okay so I'm 16 minutes into the movie..
Am I supposed to be watching this thinking the Ryan Gosling character is autistic? Because I can't shake that notion and it's making it all very uncomfortable and weird
Did /tv/ ruin this movie?
>>80331040
It's entirely plausible and would make sense considering he's supposed to be a savant at driving. Don't see the issue.
Also he's implied to be constantly tired (drives real late at night, first elevator scene where he can barely stand and his eyes constantly droop) and the movie has an intentionally dreamlike and surreal tone, so take that how you will.
>>80330932
>he puts on the mask
jesus christ, /tv/ has ruined me
>>80331040
he is doing a lot of drugs to be able to drive like that, so his brain is fried (swings between deep depression and violent outbursts), all of refn's movies are a subtle criticism of American pill culture.
>>80331143
No one can escape the memes
>>80322618
I liked the film, and actually think it's flawless, which is a rare quality nowadays, but isn't nothing special
>>80322618
This is unironically my favorite movie of all time and I've watched it over a dozen times. I've also cried at it at 3 different points. I wouldn't expect most people to hold my opinions, but I first saw this movie when I had just gotten my license and car at age 16 and something about it clicked with me. I would always go on night rides to unwind and loved driving and the movie was incredibly relatable because of that, I've never seen anything like it. The fact that I also live in an area that looks much like LA in the movie (with the green trees and blue skies, less of the city portions). I don't know. No other film has captured my attention as much though, probably never will because of the personal connection.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kviKv5E-Efw That's also one of my favorite videos on youtube
>>80327170
