Paramount gave the live adaptation of one of the most beloved Manga/Anime IPs of all time, the first feature film of which is considered one of the best animated films ever, to the guy who was fucking the lead actress of his film while directing Snow White and the Huntsman?
How is Rupert Sanders' career not dead in the fucking water? Is it dead in the water and Paramount just thought it'd be funny to give him a live action anime movie? Do these Hollywood assholes really think their shit is so much better than Eastern animation?

They're ripping it off because GiTs is an iconic film and with some of the most skillfully designed, drawn and animated scenes in an animation ever.
There aren't really any contemporary directors who would be both willing to work on an anime adaptation and also have the skill to come up with their own visual style that rivals the quality of the anime. Case in point, the guy they got can't even successfully copy GiTs and the scenes we've seen look cheap and tacky compared to the original animation. So, for the purposes of turning a profit, copying the good parts is really the only viable option.
