What are some examples of good digital colorists, then? Genuinely curious.
>>
>>80317501

>One of the best

No. It's one of the worst. It's like Ted Turner x 100.

The colorists just do what their told. The producers are the ones who now get the opportunity to "make this look exactly like that other film that just made money".

Robert Richardson got fired from World War Z and permanently banned from working with the studio because of the producers taking a dump all over his work in the digital color suite. And just look at OP's image - That's a great director and cinematographer team - and they still did the "let's make it look like urine to look old" schtick.
>>
>>80317625
The Godfather, which started the whole post-modern sepia craze, was colorized chemically. You can't blame the entire digital format considering a lot of colorful films were also done digitally.

And Bob Richardson... colorizes digitally.
>>

What in the hell are you even talking about? did you even read the post you're responding to? I was talking about value and color theory, not realism.
>>
>>80317903
m8 the DP just grabs a flat profile from the sensor. the colorist works WITH the DP, so they in conjunction settle on a LUT.

One of my main issues totally beyond the actual color of the scenes in modern movies is that so few DPs on digitally-shot movies seem to pay attention to the values.

I mean this is honestly what they deem passable for a major motion picture these days.

He does have a lot of great visual moments that are less "pretty" and more "conveys what you need to know about the scene/the mood". Though what I really enjoy about his movies are unrelated to the visuals

what pisses me off most is that most projectors don't display adequate brightness, so what you see in the theater is sometimes one third or one half dimmer and less saturated than what you'd see on a tv screen or monitor.

Apparently this is because the production teams are too fucking lazy to actually bother setting proper color values when they use digital film, and leave it at default. The default setting is extremely gray with no contrast, because it has the most information for the team to work with in post-production. Which is all fine, except when they're too lazy to actually bother.

This is apparently why all the marvel movies have that shitty gray look to them. I'm assuming the same is true of Arrival. Holy fuck what a visually bland movie that was.

Top is objectively better. The scene is set on a hot day. The actor in the foreground is visible sweaty and the actor in the background is wearing a hat that provides shade. The yellow tinting suggests some dust may be hanging in the air and on the church and trees.

By increasing the contrast of the scene and removing the yellow tint you have brought the image closer to reality but also taken away elements of the story. Now it just looks like some actors on a set.

Disgusting. They look like people. Real art means rendering skin tones like piss colored corpses.

Also using all that shadow/light and framing to tell the story instead of just turning everything piss yellow is the sort of thing a grandmother shooting a kids birthday party would do, not a real artist.

them saying they intended it to look pissy and unified, from the horse's mouth:
>In his conversations with the restoration team, Willis emphasized that the most important visual aspect of The Godfather was its color structure. “It’s yellow-red in much of the lighting as well as the lab work, and that ties all three films together,” says Willis. “So my main concern was to get the color right.” Harris was able to track down original dye-transfer prints of The Godfather, and one of them, from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ Technicolor collection, was screened for Willis, who determined it to be an accurate color reference.

>“Gordon kept saying all three pictures look the same, that they have the same rhyme and rhythm and use of contrast, and it’s true,” says Daviau. “A lot of people wouldn’t notice that, but when you’ve dealt with the color correction, you see he’s right.” Willis notes, “The repeatability of the visual structure really has to do with making the right choices. The initial choice is taste, and maintaining the look is craft. There’s great elegance in simplicity. My choices in lighting and the overall color were designed to create a mythic, retrospective feel, [one] without clutter.

Something between these two is best. Vikings goes so far with the desaturation and blue filters sometimes that it loses visual appeal. The show airs on the History channel, they shouldn't be afraid of showing a little green here and there since that's what it was actually, ya know, like back then.

it's not just that though, it's that they ALL try and achieve a monochrome look to ape the success of what Godfather did, but it never works and by now is cliché.

>Of "The Godfather's" golden veneer, cinematographer Willis says: "I had a strong idea of how (the movie) visually should be put together. I grew up in New York in the '30s and '40s, and felt this thing should be a brassy yellow. ... I feel it's the appropriate patina for the movie."

Anybody who has ever edited the colors of an image knows that you forget what the original image looked like very fast. You can really let your imagination run away with you and go overboard extremely quickly.

At least I hope this is what is happening. If the people working on these movies look at half the films they release and think "yes, this is good", it's time to pack my bags and head to Hollywood, because I have a career to take by the horns.

When you are working with .jpg and .png files you don't have much wiggle room. Change the colors too much and you lose contrast.

If someone could dig up a raw video file of a television show or movie that would be quite interesting to show the difference it can make.

I'll post an example. A photo .jpg that was processed by xnview. I didn't color correct this at all, it's just automated settings.

>anon thinks colourists actually matter

This is one of the least important things about making a film.

BUT

Piss yellow films suck

"Art" colour palettes suck

Nonsensical colour choices suck

If a director can use colour to enhance the emotions or feeling of their film, good! Then they deserve praise.

But it's literally on the bottom of the list of things that make a movie good.

Unless you have autism it shouldn't detract from a movie experience (unless the film is a fucking colour wheel of failure)
