based on a philip k dick book, so all of it was a dream. also, all the characters were robots and didn't realize it.

if it was just an ego trip then why were there all those scenes of the president talking to his goon, those would have been completely out of place in an artificial memory

Personally I think if every scene in the film had arnie in it then it would have been more ambiguous.

The girl he winds up with is literally on the screen at Recall right before they implant. I'd love to think the movie leaves the question ambiguous but that small detail clearly spells it out

I need to rewatch this because I've believed for years that he never left the Recall machine, but someone in a thread the other day swore that there are things in the movie that make it impossible.

Speaking of Verhoeven, his work is overall above average/good and full of sexually related themes and violence, with an underlying message of societal criticism. As of other Dutch films, I wouldn't know which have been received (unjustifiably) great.
