Was it real or a dream? Because I think there's a lot more evidence for it being a ego trip than being reality.
>Recall tech says "Blue Skys on Mars? That's new." before giving Quaid his implant.
>Nearly all the aspects of Quaid's fantasy are established in the first 20 minutes. The guy that's selling him the vacation even mentions corrupt taxi drivers, which perfectly describes the traitor Benny.
>Dr. Edgemar, who Quaid has seen in a Recall commercial in the beginning, perfectly describes the final part of the movie to Quaid before Quaid shoots him in the head. He even says "The walls of reality will come crashing down" if he kills him and what happens? One of the walls of the room gets crashed through by henchman of Cohagen.
based on a philip k dick book, so all of it was a dream. also, all the characters were robots and didn't realize it.
if it was just an ego trip then why were there all those scenes of the president talking to his goon, those would have been completely out of place in an artificial memory
Personally I think if every scene in the film had arnie in it then it would have been more ambiguous.

>robots
its VR, like the matrix, dumbass
>>80288064
See this movie made it seem real, but maybe it was all a dream.
The remake made obsvously fake
the real question was was Dr. Edgemar really trying to save him or was it just another adventurous part of his ego trip and he'll wake up just fine anyway.. he obviously wouldn't have reached blue skies on mars if he ended the program right there..
>>80288064
the easiest way to know its real is when his friend Harry tells him to not to go and looks at him long, they were all plants to make sure he didnt try to fuck up
The girl he winds up with is literally on the screen at Recall right before they implant. I'd love to think the movie leaves the question ambiguous but that small detail clearly spells it out
I need to rewatch this because I've believed for years that he never left the Recall machine, but someone in a thread the other day swore that there are things in the movie that make it impossible.

>>80289072
Oh shit, dawg.
>>80289072
Wait so you're saying ... definitely still in Recall through the whole movie? Sorry I have the dumb I don't get it
>>80289070
I'm old enough to have seen it when it came out
I always thought the point of the movie was to rip you between what you know is real (protip its not) and what you WANT to be real..
I would have never thought 25 years later it would come up for debate..
>>80289434
So, what's the answer oh wise wizard
>>80289305
My brain is a hollowed out husk so I could be missing the fact you're memeing my gorgeous face/off but yes he either is still in Recall the whole movie or he just happened (through a insane coincidence) to wind up with a girl who looks and acts exactly like the girl he picked but it's the magic of Hollywood story-telling so I guess the second one could totally be possible
Ahahaha. You think this is the real Quaid? It is./spoiler]
>>80288824
Based on a PKD book so even HE didn't know if it was real or not. He had severe schizophrenia
>>80289218
Yeah, but isn't this a girl he's supposed to have had a relationship with previously? So it makes sense that she would be the girl in his head if it were all real.
>>80289479
there is no debate, verhoeven gave a clear and definite answer.
Answer: you're just a fucking idiot who should go back to watching Transformers.
Total Recall and American Psycho are excellent, funny, thoroughly entertaining movies.
both of their "did it really happen" aspects are the LEAST INTERESTING things about them.
neither of them happened. they are movies. really really good movies. you watch them, enjoy them immensely, and then they're over.
>>80292007
there's no indication in the film it was a girl he was with before, there's every indication its a girl designed on the specifications he gave as he was going under..
>>80288975
He is making a reference to the authorĀ“s repetitive themes, dumbass.
>>80292344
It is the girl from his dreams though, the one from the opening sequence where he wakes up screaming in bed besides Lori.
>>80288064
What did they mean by this?
>>80288064
Both Arnold and Verhoeven said it was a dream but what the fuck do they know right
>>80288064
do you really have to be so literally minded?
fucking autist
>>80293801
This. It's quite masterfully crafted. The whole thing has arguments for both positions, but no real conclusive evidence. Bravo Verhoeven, bravo.
WAS IT RAPE?
>>80288064
his whole trip was manufactured to turn him into a savior of mars. they used the tech to turn him into the hero they needed, including brainwashing him into falling in love with the girl when he meets her
Fake and gay.
He lied to Richter, there was no party.
>>80293976
why is it that, when it comes to the artistic endeavors, the dutch always get a thorough ballwashing and never any real criticism?
never heard anyone give scathing critique of dutch film, art, etc.
>>80296848
Speaking of Verhoeven, his work is overall above average/good and full of sexually related themes and violence, with an underlying message of societal criticism. As of other Dutch films, I wouldn't know which have been received (unjustifiably) great.
>>80294036
>>80295870
>What do you feed this thing?
>Blondes.
And the answer by 80's standards is no, because who wouldn't let Arnold fuck them?
By today's standards, retroactively yes because all sex is rape.
>>80294036
>prime Sharon Stone
literally perfect
>>80290574
It's based on a short story that was first featured in a magazine, not a book. And no, Philip K. Dick was never diagnosed with schizophrenia.
>>80289072
They had a history together
When they meet on Mars or in Recall or whatever, she's like "youre a dick for that thing you did way back when"
So if it was all real, their history together was the same pre-Recall. watch the movie nigga shit
