The original Rangers weren't misfits. They were all friends prior to being Rangers, and they were hyper competent in their respective areas of expertise. The show was good about showing them working at it though. We're not just told Jason is a great martial artist and never shown him doing anything outside of battle to back it up. We constantly see him training or training others to enforce that it takes hard work and dedication.

This element of the show ended up being dropped once they started changing out the casts yearly, and I think that's a shame. Maybe kids today relate more to these "screw up" characters, but Power Rangers were never supposed to be relatable. They were supposed to be idealized characters that served as positive role models for kids. I personally started doing martial arts because I wanted to be like Tommy, and it's the best thing I ever did.

Yes that's why the cast was changed, but the reason they swapped the races of Black and Yellow is because of PC bullshit. There's never been another Asian Yellow Ranger, and there was only one other Negro Black Ranger, many years later in 2007.
