We wait YEARS in between Disney films like Big Hero 6, and Zootopia to get a new princess movie. Princess films are supposed to include some type of romantic love story. Even is it's the B-plot to the main story it needs to in there. The fact that there's no prince in this film blows chunks! We already had a wasted Lesbo/A-Sexual princess goes on a quest movie, and it's called Brave.
Moana is just Brown Brave at this point. Sure the quest / journey is different, but it's still a quest flick where the free spirited princess needs to learn something.

Moana was probably a big hit all over Polynesia, because it contained a lot of imagery and folklore that islanders were raised on and intimately understand. Having vacationed in Hawaii, I am aware of some of it, and was able to imagine, from my limited experience, how much my Hawaiian friends must appreciate the many cultural and historic references in the film. I'm betting a lot of them consider it a favorite movie, as well as a work of art. I pretty sure, though, that a lot of it went way over the heads of people who don't know any islanders, or have have never been to Polynesia.

The only point I can almost point in your favor is that Moana's father in the start of the movie seems like he's a hard-core conservative with a traditional value system while the mother is more open-minded and decides to let her daughter go because muh destiny.

Everyone keeps saying Maui is fat and ugly, but he looks a LOT better in motion, seriously, and he is very clearly builtfat. I wish he was a little more competent in the movie, but he is by far my favorite disney character and "You're Welcome" is the best disney song.
