I don't know where people get the idea that awards matter or only go to the most deserving. It's weird that people can think of individual Hollywood folks as being retards, yet somehow believe that, when they get to vote, they're based and sober.

Oscars are a combination of the actual quality of the work, the popularity of the nominee, and industry forces at work. People generally know folks who work on every movie, they all read the scripts long before the movies get made, their agent also represents Casey Affleck and it'd be a big payday and coup for your colleague and friend, blahblahblah.
