This is the best film of the decade so far, and maybe even Loach's best ever (big call). His anger at the injustice of it all is evident in every frame, as is his tenderness toward his characters, and in several scenes, the characters' kindness toward each other. I was in tears at the end.

I know a lot of health problems stem from personal choice like smoking, being obese etc. But bad things can happen to anyone. You never know when you could be involved in an accident, be a victim of assault or simply develop cancer and then you're unable to work.

Sure there's a lot of abuse of the system and the government needs to prevent that, but I just don't think people should be thrown into permanent poverty and hardship because of an unexpected situation. The problem with conservatives is they don't seem to acknowledge something as simple as bad luck. Not everyone claiming benefits is a leech or a product of bad choices. The weight of unemployment and disability benefits on the budget is minimal, there's other areas there are far more wasteful and expensive but the Tories refuse to cut.

At the end of the day, no amount of welfare will solve poverty or hardship. The way to solve it is a prosperous national economy with strong local communities who are willing to support their weak in times of need. Capitalism with a limited welfare state is probably the best model so far, but it really does erode social and cultural identity.
