Do i need to have seen the other Wolverines to like/'get' Logan?
(Serious question) (I have seen X-men)
Unless you've seen every Xmen related movie up to this point, it won't have as much an impact

Nope.
In fact X-Men (2000) is the only reference they mention, and you don't even need to watch that.
No. The timeline is convoluted as fuck for every X-Men movie except the first 3. One really doesn't need to see any other X-Men movie, but it would probably help the viewer relate to the characters more.

I'd watch X2

It kinda helps if you have seen Wolverine Origin.

only if he wants brain damage
>>80084191
Yeah you really need to make another logan thread to ask this question you fucking cock sucking bag of shit.
>>80084191
Nah. They play it off in the movie like "A lot of that shit was only stories made for children"
Worked well though.
They reference X-Men 2000 and Apocalypse. I think it would hinder your ability to empathize with the characters if you missed out on their on-screen journeys. But like others noted, it works as a standalone movie quite well.
Can't you marathon the movies over a weekend/week and then see it next week? That's what I would do.

What happened prior to the events of Logan that turned him into a depressed alcoholic?

Watch the movies, retard.
I'll give you a hint from the Johnny Cash song: "everyone I know goes away, in the end."

You'll see the sword he got from The Wolverine.
