He left when he heard the horn, it meant he had more pressing matter at hand than fighting Gandalf. Also whole scene was much better in the book, witch king was the first one to enter through the breached main gate and gandalf was the only one that didnt run away making for a much cooler standoff

this is not about the books though. in the movie Gandalf looks like a pussy talking about the witch king. he doesn't even put up a fight and gets his staff destroyed and is pinned to the ground by witch king's autistic screeches. wtf was jackson thinking?

One of the many problems with the extended edition. The extended scenes are cool the first time you see them but they ruin the pacing and make the films less competent as a whole.
After seeing the extended editions one or two times you should always be re-watching the trilogy with the theatrical releases.

The Nazgul were missing for the entirety of the Rohirrim charge and Mumakil battle. He only showed up to rek Theoden but that was way after the Gandalf confrontation.
