The details are mostly the same in intent/tone while the specifics are different.

Laura is technically not X-23 as such - "X-23" is an entire batch of mutants created from different mutants genetic material implanted into a host mothers. Laura's mother isn't Sarah Kinney or a person working on the project, she's unknown.

Funnily enough Laura is specifically listed as X-23-23. The standard things like her being made to be a weapon, had her claws coated with Adamantium, etc. still apply.

The X-23 line was considered a failure and all the mutants it created ordered to be terminated because while they assumed children would be easy to program as amoral killers, it didn't work. The kids didn't want to hurt people, rebelled, etc.

They replace it with X-24

So why did the bullet kill X-24?

I wanted to see what it would take to kill X-24. The first fight on the farm was so cash, but at the climax of the movie that green shit wore off after he killed like a dozen or so dudes. Logan should have faced X-24 head on while still amped up on the medicine, having to tear him to shreds to the point where he can't regenerate. The adamantium bullet was predictable and hamfisted, not to mention a huge plothole.

Is Deadpool to be thanked for making this movie possible? Would Logan exist the way it is if it wasn't for Deadpool's success ?

I actually found this movie borderline unwatchable and would have probably walked out of the theater if I hadn't been with friends. I'm shocked its sitting at 93% on rotten tomatoes right now. My friends loved it, so am I wrong somehow?

I love that they kept it subtle why Xavier was in forced solitude. I think they did a great job not forcing any plot or exposition into the movie. Just a little bit of a "wait a minute, oh god, oh god I remember I did something horrible" and then claws to the chest.

The movie itself is 8/10, but I give it a lot of credit for going the direction it did. I think in 20 years, when capekino is the norm, we'll look back and think Logan is laughably outdated. But it's a trailblazer in the genre for sure.

Same deal as the original movie from 2000. Pretty quaint if you watch it nowadays but you can tell for sure that it was ahead of its time.

I loved the Statue of Liberty line. You think it's just Xavier having an alzheimer's moment if you remember the first movie but they don't make it all that blatant.

Opening night fury road had a very, very positive thread on /tv/. So did deadpool.

There were trolls (le reddit movie) but from people who actually saw them on the thursday night the response was good. Same thing happens here. Critics and fans both loved it.

I wondered if they were going to have the balls to actually have Logan live and still retire the character. An ending where he lives and just acts as a surrogate dad to a bunch of a orphans, or at least just Laura, and moves past his life of violence, was equally viable with how the movie was written. He gets a new family, after his old one was taken; Charles is right with there still being time for him to experience a good life, and Logan shows Laura that despite her roots as a biological weapon who has spent the entire movie killing peole in a rage-fueled rampage, you can move past your "mold," the theme the cowboy movie injected.

You even get to preserve the metaphor bullshit of Laura literally saving him from his rage-filled murderer side.

But nah, they just killed him.

probably my biggest complaint is taking a superhero movie, an inherently childish genre, and playing it completely straight through what's basically a western, which I dont really have much of a problem with. But then at the same time falling for the same hackneyed problems that every super hero movie has (gratuitous but meaningless violence, the literal evil clone, the super green juice), but doing it with zero irony or self awareness.

If it was a non-superhero movie, id find it mediocre and uninspired at best. That it finds a way to insert the worst parts of the super hero genre made it tough to watch

The movie as a whole is a commentary on how shitty relationships between the US and Mexico (caused by both sides) are making the lives of regular immigrants in the US worse.
The wiping out of the mutants in the Logan timeline is slower and more subtle, but it's still insidious. It's not the trail of tears, it's more like a world where "well you're a mutant so your sentence is doubled from what it would normally be" is the norm.
