What are his essential movies? I've already seen Inland Empire and Twin Peaks.

Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive

also Eraserhead and Elephant Man
>>
Blue Velvet
Eraserhead
Mulholland Drive
The Straight Story
>>
Inland Empire is his masterpiece so anything else you watch will just be a diluted version of what you have already seen. I'd say just rewatch Inland Empire until you have complete mastery over it.

Lost Highway

I don't think Lost Highway could be understood by any female. Definitely his most redpilled film.

R.I.P. Bill Paxton
>>
>>79964153
But Bill Paxton wasn't in Lost Highway
>>
FWWM > Mulholland Drive > Inland Empire > Wild At Heart > Lost Highway > The Straight Story > Blue Velvet > Eraserhead > The Elephant Man > Dune

Only Dune is inessential.
>>
>>79964309
Didn't realize he made so few movies or I would've just watched them all.

2bh he's more right than you are. Elephant Man is plebeiancore that indulges in appeal to entry level emotions. Fire Walk With Me would be my number 2 personally after Inland Empire but it's definitely at the top end of his filmography.
>>
Watch Eraserhead last, his other films will seem quite dull by comparison.
>>
>>79964535

Lower barrier to entry = less sophisticated art.

The Elephant Man is a fine film, Lynch has just made far better.

You're hopeless if you don't like FWWM though.

all of them. it's not that many. just watch them all in chronological order.

plebeiancore doesn't have a scene like this in it, which is arguably his best scene in any of his films

If you can't appreciate Eraserhead you're the leddit fag. Anyone who puts FWWM as their first favorite Lynch film and Eraserhead as their third to last obviously has something to prove.

FWWM blows Eraserhead out of the water on every level. Eraserhead is mid level. Below the hard kino trifecta of Inland Empire, Lost Highway and FWWM but above the capeshit of Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man.
>>
>>79966147
Lynch doesn't only make completely ambiguous films. With Lynch you never know if you'll get an answer or not.

FUCK I just watched that last week and haven't seen any of his other movies besides Mulholland Drive. Hope what you said doesn't apply to me. I mean Twin Peaks is definitely tamer than any of his movies right like I enjoyed that the movies can't really be that dull

Guess you missed the part where I said only Dune is inessential. Eraserhead is a good movie. Lynch has made better movies. But, again, if you don't like FWWM, you probably just have bad taste.
>>
>>79966253
I mean I still don't understand why the ear was from the gay dude, or why frank dressed as the third man when he didn't know he was being followed, but the whole movie kind of clicked.

Eraserhead on the other hand left me confused as I'm not even sure how the story concludes

>mfw I chose to watch Eraserhead on my first date
>>
>>79966236
Eraserhead was Lynch perfecting surrealist imagery. He's never achieved the meditative experience he managed to capture in Eraserhead ever again. He frames it perfectly so that you don't know what you're looking at but you're entranced by it. FWWM was fine but in no way does it surpass Eraserhead. What makes you say its better?
>>
>>79966366
I like FWWM also, but I don't understand how someone can say it surpasses Eraserhead.
>>
>>79964032
Definitely just watch them all. Inland Empire is his best imo, but they all bring something new to the table. Also Dune is totally worth watching. My ranking would be something like
Inland Empire > Lost Highway > FWWM > Blue Velvet > Wild at Heart > Dune > Eraserhead > Mulholland Drive
I haven't seen The Straight Story or Elephant man yet. For some reason the former just really really doesn't catch my interest, but seeing as I love Lynch I suppose I'll get to it eventually
>>
>>79966293
don't listen to that retard. eraserhead is entry-level.
Inland Empire is the true endgame. watch it last.
>>
>>79966393

>>79966387
Yeah, by most standards Blue Velvet would be considered strange and ambiguous but compared to the rest of Lynch films it's straight forward.
>>
>>79966317
the Straight Story is his most normal film though. Wild at Heart is still bizarre in comparison.
>>
>>79966338

opinion discarded.
>>
>>79966568
I considered switching Dune and Eraserhead, in retrospect perhaps that's correct. But MD felt very watered down and pointless to me. Also FWWM was phenomenal, all three of those films in the top spot are very close and very good
>>
>>79966532
Straight Story is weirder than Elephant man and Dune.
>>
>>79966532
oh shit, yeah thats the most normal for sure

Wild at Heart is still pretty normal in a narrative/structural sense however

Eraserhead had some neat scenes like the woman in the radiator.
