La La Land is far superior in almost every respect (cinematography, screenplay, directorial and acting talent, etc.) to Moonlight. The only thing going for Moonlight was that it was as Oscar bait as you get. The fact that La La Land was even in contention for Best Picture was amazing looking back on it.

La La Land's original release date was in the summer (re: it would not be in contention for awards season). Only when Lionsgate knew they had a modern day classic on their hands, one that will be played on TCM eighty years from now, did they decide to push back the release date. Also, I never said La La Land wasn't Oscar bait, only that Moonlight was awards bait to a far greater extent.

The movie's an adaptation of the Book of Job; I don't where the fuck you're getting this Genesis nonsense. And the major theme is the conflict between living life in congruence with our inherent nature, or living by principles that might not have a biological foundation. There's no nature/nurture argument; Malick isn't Pinker.

Yo both the Artist and La La Land are PRIME FUCKING EXAMPLES of b8. they're fubu movies. they appeal primarily to industry people and musical movie nerds. Its old movie nostalgia bait. the artist is literally nothing other than a 90 minute silent movie. La La Land is Singing in the Rain for milennials. Dont be thick.
>>
>>79960537
You make some observations that by themselves are correct, but for whatever reason you try to play it a foul play, conspiracy.
I'm not thick to it, it's you who are too full of cynicism, the malaise of a generation.

I think The Artist is a billion times more impressive than La La Land. It's not that hard to make a musical. I mean, look at fucking Glee. People might not be into it, but you won't shock and appall people if you pitch them a musical the same way they would a black and white silent movie.

The Artist is a gimmick, sure, but gimmick movies that work is always a really impressive accomplishment. Buried had an easier concept to sell than The Artist.

it's the complete opposite of a pleb filter. Chazelle's only good film is 'Guy & Madeline On A Park Bench', 'La La Land' is just a spruced up, Hollywood bait remake of it. I bet you thought 'Whiplash' was good. You make me sick.
>>
Genuinely one of the most visually impressive films I've ever seen, it's like Oldboy times a hundred but there's genuine humanity among the edgyness. Amazing storyline as well. By far the best film I've seen, I think ever. There's just nothing like it.

How much of an idiot do you have to be to draw parallels between the cinematic masterpiece that is La La Land to a shitty network television show? I almost feel sorry for you.

>>79961020
My issue with the artist is that all it did was show that we can still make movies exactly like we made 80 years ago. It wasn't bringing anything to the table other than nostalgia bait

Drive has influenced movies way more than the Artist did, and it wasn't nominated. Nobody cared about the artist until it became a meme. Sure, it wasn't unimpressive, but was it the best movie of that year? I dont think it was in my top 10.

You're too obsessed with bait this bait that. Any success of something gets discarded simply by calling it bait of some sort.
And since first exhibition, plenty of people cared about The Artist, so you're not truthful. Its acclaim was immediate and ultimately took it to Best Picture.

>comparing a musical to a musical tv show is somehow wrong

La La Land is probably better than Glee (don't know, never watched the show), but it's absolutely an apt parallel to draw when people act like making La La Land is some kind of audacious, groundbreaking thing. Surprise, surprise, kids who grew up watching a show where people break out into song and dance numbers are willing to watch a movie where people break out into song and dance numbers.

>>79961660

Once talkies took over the silent movie was absolutely dead. I'm not saying that The Artist is the greatest movie ever, but you're acting like making a movie the way movies were made 80 years ago and having it be anything other than a film school curiosity isn't an incredible accomplishment. When people are used to incredible special and visual effects, making a movie without spoken dialogue feel like a modern movie, impressing and appealing to audiences without boring them is incredible. The fact that it's a pretty good movie that doesn't feel limited makes it incredible.

Thanks for pointing that out...

>La La Land is some kind of audacious, groundbreaking...

It is though. How often do you see an original musical produced by a major studio? That was rhetorical by the way.

My god, your narrow worldview is there for all to see. I'd honestly be surprised if you even knew who Jacques Demy was. No wonder Hollywood has to pander to neanderthals like you with superhero schlock.

Sure thing, buddy. And why bring up Demy if you're trying to argue for La La Land's originality?

It's laughable that you can't even make the distinction between an unoriginal work and one that is uniquely its own, but partly inspired by musicals that were made over fifty years ago.

I bet you think Tarantino is a god.

Musicals are a really common form of entertainment. But yeah, I'm not awestruck that some guys came up with the idea of making a movie with original songs in it, and I'm not flabbergasted that a non-major studio decided to spend $20 or so million on making it with big stars. Wow, how amazing, some guy made a movie for $3 million dollars that won a few Oscars, was nominated for more, and then, get this, he was able to get a second tier studio to give him $20 million to make a movie with Gosling, Emma Stone, and John Legend attached? Holy fucking shit, my mind is absolutely blown. Are they even allowed to do this?

This is some fucking revolutionary shit. The rules of cinema have been rewritten. They're actually going to write songs and have them sung by major actors and a pop artist? In a movie? What kind of outlaw renegade wants to make a musical, and what kind of lunatic mini-major film studio would spend twenty fucking million dollars - that's a two with SEVEN ZEROES - on a movie with famous names directed by a guy coming off an Oscar winning movie?

The world no longer makes sense.
