Technology hasn't advanced enough since Jackson's King Kong to make a difference. The bugs, the dinosaurs, the action sequences even the ape all look the same. This will be a very boring and underwhelming movie especially because the other one is still fresh in memory.

it doesn't have to be super dark and edgy, the one liners just felt forced and off, it's like the characters are aware that they are in a movie and aren't taking their situation seriously

part of the charm of monster and B movies is that the characters in them were mostly serious even though some of the movies themselves were corny or had ridiculous premises, if skull island wanted some humor i think it would've been more fitting to reference that instead of go for the quip approach

I was watching the new Toho Godzilla the other day; it had a very serious tone, which worked because of how it was presented.

The problem with a lot of modern Hollywood taking after the MCU formula is that there's an assumption that audiences can't take fantastic concepts seriously any more. I think that's because the films themselves treat them as ridiculous.

I can't think of a Hollywood blockbuster that would have a scene like this, where a giant monster destroying the city is played almost entirely as sincerely tragic.
