Does anybody watch soap operas in this day and age? I have hard time believing middle-aged and elderly women even watch them anymore, let alone in numbers that justifies their production

They cost less to make than reality television.

Spanish language telanovellas are where it's at now, even though 99% of them are women screaming, crying and being brutalized, i guess old ladies just like to watch misery porn
Why are soaps so wacky desu? I remember watching some with my mom when i was a kid, and they'd go from a relatively normal and grounded to suddenly being about vampires and shit.
One time i tuned in to 'passions', and this old lady was batshit insane. She snuck into a rich guy's mansion, got into a struggle with some guy and i think she killed him. She was like "i didn't watch macgyver all those years for nothing, HAWHAWHAW!”

yeah all that was passions. i remember that one being specifically written to be batshit

What was her name? Any clips? That shit was fucking hilarious.

I got into it in the 2000's era during a really cool story line. Every time I catch it on now it's pretty shit. I like the soap opera genre, it has the most potential for storytelling. My dream when I was younger was to be a head writer for Days of our Lives.
this shit gave me nightmares thanks for bringing it up
