It almost definitely cost them more to mount the operation to stop them. And to top it all off, he helps them STOP his underlings that try to take control, because he WON'T actually kill the civilians.

He should have gotten some kind of good end.

I was thinking about this yesterday. Aside from being the only compelling character in that entire movie, he was doing the right thing. The brutality of golden age piracy is massively overstated because of how it was portrayed by the media that originally popularized it.

Edward Teach was most likely a pretty mellow guy, at least for a ship captain in that day and age. He cultivated a fearsome persona and made some grandiose threats such as at Charles Town, but his actual committed atrocities pretty much rests at zero.
