>literal hundreds, or even thousands, of movies set during the Second World War
>First World War gets almost no attention in comparison
Why is this?
Also, could you recommend me some good movies or TV series set during the First World War?
>>
>>
>>79902493

Because trench warfare was fucking miserable and it's a war literally everybody hated and destroyed Europe.

WW2 destroyed Europe too, but it was an actual fight against good and evil (although nobody cared that Jews were getting gassed until it was convenient to demonized the Germans). People eat the general heroism and enormous sacrifices made during that war because it wasn't characterized by stalemates in which soldiers were literally penned in ditches for years.
>>
There wasn't a lot of maneuver during WW1. You basically had some form aof trench warfare except at the start and end of the war. It lends itself to character studies of guys in the trenches and them having to decide to go rush machine gun nests knowing they'll be chopped to bit, all because the generals want to be able to say they were "attacking". It was a horrid, brutal war. Agree there should be more films about it.
>>
>No clear villain like WWII
>Huge death counts
>Fucked up shit like chemical warfare and rats feasting on corpses in the trenches which were flooded with blood and guts mixed with mud (in other words, way more visually disturbing than WWII)
>Less dynamic war with a lot of down time spent sitting in trenches and periods of nothing happening
>Americans barely involved so no angle for Hollywood to really sell it outside Europe which is pointless because Europe is a secondary market at best

Basically that. The Germans, Austro-Hungarians, and Turks were technically the enemy of the Western allies but they weren't bad and didn't even instigate the war really. It's impossible to sell on patriotism and therefore has little marketable appeal to the masses of retards who aren't interested in history.
>>
>>79902493
Watching people hunt for rats and dodge mustard gas is boring.
>>
There have been quite a few films on the first world war. It's a bit more distant historically as well as the fact that the majority of the war was relatively stagnant.

WW2 was also the birth of the current (as of yet) American way of looking at themselves. The WW2 generation is held on a pedestal as what all Americans should aspire to and remember. American involvement in WW1 was substantially smaller and didn't have the same transformative effect.

They cost more to make because all the surplus equipment is rusted to shit and nobody does modern reproductions, safety is also a big issue.

You can go down the rubber guns and CGI route but even then you're still worse off financially since studios already have warehouses full of rubber WW2 guns from previous WW2 movies.

World War I, physiological horror piece.

> The fear of being buried alive or lost in the blackness was a constant. On one nighttime march through a rain-filled trench, his squadron came across a soldier cemented into the mud and left behind by his own fellow infantrymen. “We made some vain efforts to pull him out,” Barthas recorded, “almost to the point of pulling his arms and legs out of their sockets. Seeing that we too were abandoning him, he begged us to put him out of his misery with a rifle shot …

It's been said even saving private Ryan couldn't show the true horrors of Omaha beach, with the effects that an mg42 has on a human body literally ripping it to shreds, no movie would be allowed to show it. And WW1 is basically the same. Men getting torn apart by machine guns and literally obliterated by artillery, any WW1 movie would be horribly depressing because that's what that war was. Just not something most people want to go see.

Because during WWI film technology was still pretty rudimentary and basic, movies were still silent and the film quality was generally not great and they didn't have the technical know-how to film large battle scenes.

By the time WWII rolled around film technology had advanced leaps and bounds, including sound and color, which allowed filmmakers to create films about the war. During this time the Governments of different nations would fund the creation of War movies to popularise the war and as a result of that "WWII movies" became a genre of itself, and a lot of the modern WWII films made today can trace their roots back to films made during the war or right after it.

You can also make the argument that WWI was viewed differently by people at the time compared to WWII, but that isn't the whole picture. A lot of people were against WWII at the time, in a lot of nations, and while the casualties were not as large as the first, they were still catastrophic. I think the difference lies mainly in the technology available at the time and the push (and funding) by governments to push out propaganda, which you can thank Goebbels for originally.
>>
>>79908189
Dude, battlefield 1 is literally worse than nothing when it comes to historical accuracy. I know /tv/ usually hates /v/ crossposting like there's no tomorrow, but if you'd have actually played the campaign you would know that it has an introductory mission in which you witness the full horror of WWI. Granted, it's not traditional trench warfare, but it manages to portray the essence of a pointless battle with death all around you.

Also France has been added with the DLC that just came out. Don't get me wrong, it still violates a lot of what is important history about WWI, but you are blatantly lying.

> I want a war film where the protagonists dies for looking over the trench to get just a single glimpse of the enemy or shot in the back by a superior for not fully subjugating himself to insanity.

Yeah great idea, OP.

love how everyone agreed that chemical weapons are too OP and banned them from future wars

>chemical weapons are too OP
Chemical gas wasn't very effective except when they were first employed and the targets didn't have the experience or equipment to deal with them.

That's one of the reasons why no belligerents resorted to them in WW2 even in their most dire straits because they wouldn't have accomplished much.

The whole war is an amazingly good underdog story

there should be a movie of a grander scale, that incorporates the frequent assassinations of european royals and even of lincoln during that era leading up to wwI, and and the social changes that were engendering socialist themes and anarchist themes, and the colonialist competition between euro powers
>>
>>79902493
Because most of the modern world is embarrassed by WWI.

We sent millions of dudes to death in a spiritual and industrial war that no one at home understood. All of this was due to the rise of too many large and expanding powers that wanted too much of the pie.

We essentially browbeat those men into marching to their death over simple ideals, religion, and greed with only a vague sense as to why.

[citation needed]
To my knowledge there is not a shred of concrete evidence that anyone was gassed in any of the concentration camps. Ovens or systematic killings certainly (to what extent is completely different topic), but no there is absolutely no evidence of gassings outside self-contradicting eyewitness reports and circumstantial incoclusive "logical reasoning".

because Americans can only watch crusader flicks where the forces of liberal democracy crush the enemies of freedom. The American public are incapable of watching a film actually about war, struggle for the sake of struggle, sacrifice for the sake of sacrifice. Americans need "good guys and bad guys", and the International League of Islamist-Commie-NAZIs is the perfect enemy. Opponents in a war are people who deserve respect, they're not beasts, monsters, or villains simply because they fight on the other side.

Movies are 95% propaganda these days anyway

>>
>>79902648
The last point is basically the most important.
WWI doesn't have an almost comical villain like the nazis.
They tried to do a lot of stuff in WWI actually, but always with germans as the bad guys because they hoped that audiences would hold the same biases as when they watched WWII stories.
Ironically the best WWI movie "All quiet on the western front" is so unique and groundbracking, because it had german protagonists with reasons for their actions. This is basically flipping the entire WWII genre on its head and works brilliantly.

completely baseless and idiotic claim

you can't support that argument saying it was the worst thing to happen to humans in comparison to any other huge war, WW2, Mongol Hordes, Taiping Rebellion, Sino Jap war, Chinese Civil War, Huguenot Wars, Russian Civil War, Islamic Jihad...

History is vast, most of these wars killed more than WW1
