We've got fans of Wong Kar-wai here right? Have any of you seen Moonlight? I remember from the first time seeing it just being struck by how much it reminded me of WKW's filmography. That direct homage to Happy Together during Chiron's drive back to Miami, the color palette in the diner scene being a nod to Happy Together, that train ride, like there was so much. I just saw this video and it reminded me of it. I said this in another thread, but it's so clear to me that with these influences Jenkins has in WKW and Taiwanese New Wave, that he created this masterpiece for western cinema. Along with The Master, they're easily the two best movies of the decade. Look at this video it makes me so full of an emotion I can't explain.

He did mention in an interview that Chungking Express was a big influence/ point of interest in his decision to make movies.
I dislike him. Just too much of a polish and strict shots/directing to pass on the themes of the films.

Makes sense. I love Wong Kar-Wai and I also loved this movie. It's only fitting that they share some similarities
desu fallen angels is my favorite

Yeah I couldn't stop thinking WKW when watching Moonlight and thought it was not particularly good in using the same style. But on the other hand it tells a much more concrete and socially relevant story, which isn't worth much in my book but it's probably why it won.

I wouldn't say so. A lot of indie stuff I feel like is Western influenced.
