Even Shinkai himself said it was a grossly overrated film and they were forced to rush it so it doesn't meet his standards.

Like others have said, Red Turtle probably should have won this year, along with Kaguya it's one of the most visually stunning films ever made. It was like MOEBIUS artwork come to life.
