I liked La La Land, but it was the biggest piece of Oscar bait since Birdman and The King's Speech.

LA movie about LA. Check. Entertainment about the entertainment industry. Check.
Starring Academy darlings with multiple noms in the past few years. Check. Written and directed by a recent Oscar winner. Check. I saw the ending more as a bittersweet "what if?" scenario, rather than a firm confirmation that they didn't need to split up. It's like a litmus test for the audience. If you're a full blown romantic dreamer, you think it would have worked out in the end. If you're more pragmatic, you think it was just one of those things you fantasize about when you think back to broken/missed relationships.
