Has anyone who is fucking ass mad about Moonlight winning actually seen the movie?

Goodness gracious, I haven't come onto /tv/ in nearly a decade but figured it would be fun after what happened. Why the fuck are yall so upset about this being some political or racial thing? lmfao the first time you guys realize a movie that is an entirely black cast is being received well, it's automatically bait? If you've seen it you'd know it was probably one of the most human movies of the decade. There's no inherent political or racial motive behind it. It's a story about being isolated, trying to understand who you are and love. Come on /tv/.

I don't get why people think this movie wasn't strong. It not only was better than all the other movies, it was far, far better. Its pacing is perfect. Every actor is incredible. It's so masterfully constructed, and Jenkins' influence in people like Wong Kar-wai and Edward Yang and other Taiwanese New Wave filmmakers shines through so well. He literally has a homage to Happy Together in there. How the fuck can people think Moonlight isn't up there with The Master as the best Western Kino of the decade?

But the movie wasn't. It wasn't the point of the fucking movie. It was a story about a man who is trying to come to terms with who he is as a person. He happens to be gay and black because Jenkins wrote him that way to stay true to what the dude he adapted the screenplay from envisioned. That's it. It was just an incredible film front to back and better emotionally, thematically and technically than anything else.

Seems like you being triggered by that is a microcosm for all the autistic behavior I see on this board right now in reaction to Moonlight winning.

nobody's mad the Moonlight won, it has a lot of fans here.

we're mad because that stunt was 100% manufactured, so people have something to write about, think about it, nothing really happened that worth noting. The handover from a white to black movie is the perfect way to end such a progressive night. am i the only one who sees this?

Jenkins has some skill in getting performances from his actors, but as a storyteller and cinematic craftsman, on the basis of this movie he's amateurish. This movie, like Boyhood, didn't really have anything to say. The boy is uninteresting and remains so as a teen and young man, and the sensitive mounting of the issue of his sexuality doesn't inherently make the movie more valuable as an artistic endeavor.

The film is just fundamentally a weak story that's being overly commended because of its managing to present characters not frequently portrayed onscreen (a decent man who's a successful drug dealer, a black inner-city youth with homosexual leanings, a bad mother who's not a monster, etc. - all very interesting potentially, but not so much in the service of drama this mundane and superficially developed)

TLDR? Get some fucking taste and watch more films than just a handful of shit outside of capeshit and horror flicks.

That was precisely the problem. It was a movie about a gay black man but offered little else. It was exactly the type of schlock that the academy would jizz over just because it ticked all the diversity marks.

The movie was boring and underwhelming and we got only a tease of character development.

>>
>>79863330
No movie "needs" anything to say. Thinking every good movie needs some deep message about everything is pretentious as fuck. Moonlight is just a well executed character study that examines how our environment influences who we become. It's funny how you complain about people praising this simply because its about a gay black boy, when many critics were also praising it because it dealt with themes and subjects that are universal, like being alienated for being different, getting picked on in school, being pressured by the people around you to grow up into something you're not, having difficulty finding love, issues with family, etc. Poverty and homosexuality are aspects of the movie but they are not the main focus, they're mostly details. Ironically it is you who focused so heavily on race and sexual orientation that you completely missed most of the movie.

Well said. Like I said in another post, this and The Master are easily the two best movies of this decade.

Calling Moonlight a human film is the easiest way for me to put it. Everything about it was universal. Ignore that the character is gay for a minute and just think he's straight. Suddenly it's universal again for you even if you think gay people stories inherently make a movie something that it isn't. It's ultimately about that feeling of love and loneliness that you have when dealing with that, gay or not. It's just such a beautifully crafted movie.

the movie has no story structure, it has no character development, it didn't explore homosexuality / bullying / poverty / drug addiction any of these themes deeply enough to classify as social commentary, the writing and acting of the character barely conveyed any emotion

the main difference between those two movies is, even though they are not about story at all, at least manchester by the sea has one, and it makes all the difference

just by having a story as a backdrop the pacing comes much more naturally and you are allowed different kinds of moments in the movie, which in turn balance out the tone and make it seem more humane and realistic and less of an oscar bait

I guess the word here is subtlety, lonergan did a much better job, moonlight feels too much like a exposé, a character study

Hidden Figures is everything wrong with contemporary black media. Lazy, simplistic, aesthetically bland, and too comfortable with stereotypes. It's essentially the corporate/milequtoast liberal in cinematic form. The research of this movie is probably more interesting than the film itself.

Honestly it was a coin flip between Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight for me, and Moonliught was more formally inventive while Manchester felt a little bit like Margaret 2.0.

People who think La La Land should have won are morons. It would have been Chicago/The Artist tier, forgotten about six months later for being an LA Hollywood wankfest.

Hell or High Water would have been a more deserving win then La La Land.
>>
>>79866109

No, stop trying to tie everything back to politics. The empty vessel is you. And people like you. People content to dilute everything they say with words that make no sense or carry no meaning. The way we speak affects the way we think, and your laziness is priming entire generations of children to grow up with a watered-down version of the English language that is less information-dense, less impactful, and less specific.

Moonlight was another one of those films that relies on the narcissism of its audience to carry it through. By leaving huge amounts of story missing the wannabe writers all fill in the blanks themselves so that 70% of the plot has been written subconsciously by people with their heads so far up their own rectums that the film can't POSSIBLY be anything but genius.

It's like Half Life 2 in movie form.

Better than La La Land though. 2 hours of a boring couple more in love with themselves than each other with completely forgettable music.

The (((Oscars))) planned on ending their night of diversity and inclusion with a exclamation mark and giving Best Picture upset to black/gay film Moonlight. Completely shit the bed awarded it to an all white cast, who mentions their beautiful blue-eyed wife, about jazz(wewuzjazz) the only thing nogs literally ever invented. Suddenly awarded to Moonlight?? and in the end nobody wins and (((their))) whole narrative is rused. >Current political status of the US.

>Not racially or politically motivated.

Seriously, man. There are limits to naivety. You could argue the metaphors and deeper meanings the movie brings about don't apply just to the black community, but saying the movie is not racially or politically motivated is just completely delusional.

It has nothing to do with liking the movie or not. It is clearly motivated by the current situation of the US, the racial tensions, and the victory is clearly motivated by that as well.

hacksaw ridge i like it to some extent, but is just because i'm a historyfag and imo one of the worst things you can do is telling history in a wrong way just for cinematic and theatrical purpouses and that's what happened with hacksaw and most of mel gibson's films.

andrew garfield is not that good as an actor, the script was a little bit cheesy, editing was phenomenal, sound mix too, sountrack i wouldn't know because i just didn't pay much attention

it was cheesy, inaccurate, some of the cinematography was "just a bit too much" but damned, those action scenes were the SHIT, mel understands how to handle war films and this was very well done in that aspect.

Movies taking place in Los Angeles are white, yet Los Angeles is a latino city.

Ive seen it, its unique but it has this certain campy thing its trying to do, it just wasnt compelling to me.

How was it inaccurate, just curious? I assume the whole lowering people down the cliff aspect of it? Or when he see that Jap in the tunnel? Or the "im not gonna touch a gun" aspect of it. I thought that the first half is yeah, a bit cheesy, but Hugo Weaving was absolutely perfect for that role. Garfield isnt that great, but as an autist religious weirdo I felt like he made it work for the most part. Mel Gibson seems to do this transition from really light hearted (to some extent) to really dark in all his films.

As someone who lives in LA, there are MANY neighborhoods where white people are the predominant group.

Walk around So Cal and sure theres lots of Mexicans, but even more whites.

I did EMT training in East LA, near the intersection of Crenshaw and Rosecrans, didnt see a single white person all day, every single call and everyone involved was black. Its not that hard to believe.

Fun stories include
>a morbidly obese black woman who drove her car through a wall
>a hypoglycemic black crackhead throwing an incoherent fit
>a fine black gentleman who had drank so much steel reserve he pissed his pants and fell hard into the gutter

Moral of the story, I didnt see a single white person all day.

I'm not really sure how to make an argument about how deep or shallow a film is.

I think that La La Land has a lot of elements that illuminate the fantasy/nostalgia vs. reality argument. Like, how do we deal with fantasy? How do we view fantastical things like love when there's so much sarcasm in the present cultural mindset? I think that the film answers that question, but I'd have to write out like ten paragraphs to get close saying something satisfying on it.

People shit on La La Land, but as a movie there's so much you can discuss about it, while Moonlight feels like all you can really discuss is the gay guy and his friend. >>

>>
>>79872056
No, it isn't. Affirmative action in the US explicitly refers to education and employment. Every court case or policy proposal explicitly mentioning "affirmative action" has dealt with those. You cannot compare standards for education and employment to the standards of critics handing out awards. GPA, SAT scores, degrees, job training, etc. are all based off of some objective standard or criteria that can easily be compared. Opinions on movies are entirely subjective. You can argue that critics only gave an award to Moonlight because it has black actors, but there is very little proof outside of your personal feelings.

I'm sure it's liberals posting about muh gays and muh niggers. This faggot >>79866640 is even saying the mix-up was a planned jewish conspiracy

Moonlight is a good movie and it deserved to win.

That said, the Academy made it pretty clear last year that they were going to make sure that this year's Oscars would have more black winners, and that probably played into Moonlight's win, which really sort of taints the whole thing.

It's a shame, but it's a shame on the Oscars, not on Moonlight and the people who created it.

Just because people have an opinion on the subject doesn't mean they are deeply invested in it and care particularly much. that's just what you want to believe in your head.
>>
>>79872683
At least I have a functionung family with a father figure nigger
>>
>>79871956
>How are there people like you who are this stupid?

4chan motto
>>
I hope this victory encourages niggers to be as flamboyantly gay as possible.
>>
>>79872684
Well, no. there are by nature very few liberals on 4chan. Which is exactly why I don't understand why the few liberals like you have to pretend it's always an outside force of evil (/pol/) that is to blame here? I see people rant about gays and blacks all the time literally everywhere on 4chan. That is the mainstream opinion on here. If that triggers you, this simply isn't the right place for you.
>>
>>79863195
Fucking this. So obvious to anyone really paying attention.
>>
>>79872615
Compared to some, maybe. Not to you though, you uneducated nigger.

>every board is /pol/
>>
>>79862415
You can't even win oscars with simply being it about the blacks like 12 Years a Slave, you need to make him gay too. Holy fuck I can't imagine Oscar winners in the next 10 years.
>>
>>79870461
Shrek beat Monster's Inc in the first animated Oscar's then the next year Spirited Away took it, up against Lilo & Stich and Treasure Planet, that's just off the top of my head but they don't always get it
>>
>>79872878
>>>79872759
>I didn't say that. In fact, I said the exact opposite you moron. YOU keep seeing /pol/ around every corner when in reality, you just refuse to accept that it's the regular majority of users on any given board that happen to have opinions that are triggering to you.
What did he mean by this?
