I have spent the last 5 years watching this series slowly and I am almost done with it. I haven't watched any of the other Star Trek series and I wonder where I should go next... I love the melodrama and the fun character arcs this series is full of, the neat scifi plots about weird things, and I HATE watching episodes that take place mostly on the bridge as they are defending against an enemy, or in the grips of an enemy and being tortured. Which series should I move onto next?
>>
>>79822131
watch the original series, it has like only 10 episodes that take place only on the ship
>>
>>79822131
You should watch DS9 next, but I'd also recommend watching the TOS movies (1-6) because they're great
>>
>>79822131
>I haven't watched any of the other Star Trek series

Wait, it took you five years to just watch TNG? Get good scrub.

Also watch DS9, TOS, Movies, Voyager, Enterprise in that order.

DS9 is the only peer of TNG, then follow it with TOS - which itself is too 60s and campy to watch nowadays solo, but if you are already invested in the Trek universe it won't bother you and you'll appreciate the characters and recognising things they referred to in the other two shows.

Then the movies, because the first lot take place after TOS, so you need to have seen that, and the second lot take place after TNG, but you need to have watched the TOS ones first too.

Voyager next ONLY because Enterprise has to be last. Voyager will be a slog, you may want to consider watching it side-by-side with DS9 as they aired together and it might make the journey more bearable.

Finally Enterprise, which is the swansong for the entire franchise. Slow start, but you made it through TNG so you're used to that.

Then the new movies and The Animated Series just to round out and complete you experience.

DS9 is the obvious place to continue. It starts where TNG left off and continues the story set up in TNG. The premise is a little diffrent, where it's more of a serialized drama with space politics set on a space station than about exploration/story of the week. It starts off a bit slow but gets pretty damn good after a while.

If that's not to your liking there's always TOS. Similar premise to TNG but in 60's style and aestetic. When it's good it's really good. When it isn't it isn't. I like it but it's not for everyone.

Don't bother with Voyager or Enterprise unless you've watched the other ones. While not all bad, the shows don't really go anywhere and don't deliver on their premises. Lots of stale filler, boring characters and reset buttons.

The money made off the TNG blurays wasn't enough to pay for the restoration project, and the lack of fan interest, which has put CBS off from doing DS9 and Voyager.
>>
>>79825302
I read recently that the project was truly gargantuan in price and effort, and relatively little people bought the bluray collection. So, it's just not likely DS9 will ever get the same treatment.

Some shows that are not Star Trek and fit into
>melodrama
>characters
>weird things

>Twin Peaks
An all-time /tv/ favourite it's David Lynch's take on a soap opera, lots of dream symbolism, supernatural elements, melodrama and the highest waifu per character rate of any tv-show.

>Supernatural
Two brothers and a rotating cast of side-characters hunt supernatural beings since a demon murdered their mother.
CAVEAT: Was intended to end after Season 5. The creator left the show after that season and the quality took a giant hit, it got better recently but season 6 and 7 were seriously shit and powerlevels have become beyond Dragonball levels of retarded.

>True Blood
Basically a soap opera where a telepathic waitress falls in love with a vampire, also there are lots of other supernatural beings.
Quality varies A LOT between storylines and season 3 is generally regarded as the best because of the Russel Edgington character.

Well JJ at least knew how to make it fun and 2009 was one of, if not THE best Star Trek movie ever.

His problem was pissing off the antiques who live and die on canon and continuity. Continuity is only as good as it is if it's adding to the series, not hamstringing it.

Suffice it to say, he didn't build up the fuhrer and high praise 2009 got and instead went full Blockbuster bad guy with Into Darkness when he should've expanded on the new timeline with more Star Trek style stories.

>tl;dr JJ didn't do a whole lot wrong

The prime mover in an endeavor shouldn't be considered the prime maker in it.
Gene gave us a canvas, but most of the writers that added to TOS, the TOS movies, and the TNG writers added far more to his original painting which was a feint blur in comparison to what they did.
He was also very much a hypocrite about his own ideals.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business – you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don't do on our own.

It was won in a single event, when the Founder surrendered. And she did so not because she had lost militarily, but because she was persuaded by Odo, who in turn had been saved in an act of friendship from Bashir and O'Brien.

Deep Space Nine. Some good characters with genuine friendships (Basir & O'brien are the best bros in all of Trek) and even a couple of decent romances. Top tier enemies (Dukat) and great recurring races (Changelings, Vorta, Jem H'Dar). Also more serialization and a great War arc that extends over multiple seasons.

Kids that aren't as annoying as Wesley or Alexander. The best Klingon episodes (Blood Oath), Fun throwback episodes (Trials and Tribble-ations, Crossover), exploring Cardassian culture and just great TNG style morality episodes (Duet).

Would not recommend Voyager next. It's like TNG but worse. Neat premise but let down by boring characters, uninteresting aliens and the big reset button.

Enterprise is a prequel best saved for last. TOS is so different it's really up to you when you watch it. The original movies are their own beast too.

DS9 begins with O'brien leaving the enterprise. I still laugh at Picard giving him this emotional goodbye and O'brien's like 'Can I go now, sir?'

And Worf came aboard DS9 the year after TNG ended.

Voyager begins with Janeway involved in dealing with the Maquis, which came about in DS9's second season.

But I think >>79822375 meant peer in terms of overall quality.

It's still a part of earths history and his heritage. In Trek bigotry is a thing of the past but that doesn't mean people have just forgotten and will never bring it up.

Did what?

Can you point to some posts that are shitposting about Voyager's fans?
>>
>>79836679
I don't know where you're getting this criticism of Tom's interest in the 20th century from but it's not from me.

And Sisko not wanting to go to the program because of historical inaccuracy was dumb and I'm glad he was called out for it.

The only other time I remember black oppression being brought up was the Benny Hill episode, which was some vision from the Prophets and also an excuse to do a period piece.

The writers wanted to address the elephant in the room; DS9 being the first Trek to have a black character as the main character but it wouldn't make sense to do it in the post racial 23rd century, so they did an episode set in the '50s. One episode. Seems like you're the one hung up on it.

Maybe the original for a laugh. Voyager 9 and Genesis suck. Watch the original movies and quit while your ahead.

I guess it's a coincidence that all shitposting images are made by DS9 fans but you probably never saw the one with the flags either

DS9 was shot on 35 mm film, but edited on standard def video tape. Just like TNG.
>>
>>79837369
>And Sisko not wanting to go to the program because of historical inaccuracy was dumb
I'd say it was dumb of Sisko but not dumb of the show. It was smart of the show to include it, then have Kasidy shoot his shit down.
>>
>>79837115
Why do certain Trek fans get so upset when characters make this point or reference historic events around racial intolerance.

Every series has made reference to the horrors of slavery or the holocaust or inquisitions or crusades and everything else.

If you're mad that Trek is addressing racism, you're watching the wrong series.

>>79822131
Deep Space Nine is okay. TNG is simply the best of the bunch. The others are garbage. Of course, the 60's version is a guilty pleasure.

I know you said that "all" shitposting images are made by DS9 fans, yet here I am, proving you wrong.

It's just crazy that you get offended when someone says "Voyager is dumb", so you retaliate by saying "DS9's fans are dumb".

Your actions are not equivalent, and you are being more antagonistic than the people you complain about.

I'm currently watching DS9, previously watched TNG and TOS. TNG was my Trek as a kid so it's got a special place in my heart. I loved how campy TOS was. So far, I've been impressed at how quickly DS9 got good compared to TNG. Quark is definitely my favorite character.

Do Odo and Kira ever become likeable? Were they well received when DS9 was airing? Also, does DS9 get better or worse after Worf signs on? Worf was my favorite in TNG if that matters.

DS9 finds it feet relatively quickly. I was glad when Jadzia told Bashir once and for all, she will never fuck him.

Odo becomes a lot more sympathetic and conflicted. Kira pretty much stays the same but learns that not all Cardassians...

I like the Klingon episodes on DS9 more than the ones from TNG which were almost always either Worf restoring his family name and teaching his son.

How far through are you?

I just started on S3. I think Kira just rubs me the wrong way because she reminds me too much of what people are like in the real world, as opposed to people in pre-DS9 Trek.
>>
>>79839363
>>79840038
Yes, they tone down her anti-Fed shit after S1 and push that on Kai Wynn.

Top Tier Kira are basically fakes:
1) Holodeck Bond Girl KGB Colonel Anastasia Komananov
2) HyperSex Attendant Mirror Kira

Worst Kira's are whenever there's weird sexual tension with her and Odo, and also with her and Obrien (when she was Keiko's surrogate Womb). Writers are always creating crazy triangles for with her.

Actress is pretty qt though.

After TNG, obviously DS9, they tie together.

Voyager is shit. Some people still defend it. They are retards, don't trust them.

After DS9 watch the TNG movies and then move on to the TOS movies. If you can handle the TOS movies, watch the original show.

After all that, if you still want to punish yourself, watch Enterprise. Or Voyager. But it's wasting your own time.

Yes TNG and DS9 tie together with the crossover characters.

I really like the comfy-factor of DS9 with it's many side characters. That was the real draw. You could tell the writers gave a shit about them.

Contrast that with VOY...I think one of the writers described the difference between DS9 and VOY was the attitude in the writers room.

Bryan Fuller on writing for Star Treks shows:

>When I was watching Deep Space Nine– I think it’s one of the best incarnations of Star Trek, and I have affection for all of them, but Deep Space Nine has a very special heart because I think they were primarily character-based, more than any of the other shows. And I think Next Generation at its peak was some of the best television that has ever been, but Deep Space Nine spoke to me on a more intimate level. And I’m not sure what it was, but I just understood the math of storytelling, because storytelling is mathematics. Like, you have to build, and you have to subtract, and divide, and there’s all sorts of math to telling a story, and it just clicked.

>They let me into the writers’ room, and it was Ira Behr who was like “Okay, we’ll give this guy a chance and he can be in the writers’ room.” And it was interesting to be in a writers’ room for the very first time. And what was great about the Deep Space Nine writers’ room was that they were all fans of Star Trek and you were with people who loved the program, whereas on Voyager there was sort of an attitude of you know, [disgusted] “It’s Star Trek” and all, you know. And I was just like “What are you talking about? You’re lucky to be here.” So Deep Space Nine were the fans and then Voyager was a little bit of like, you know, “We’re better than this” and I was like “No you’re not. None of us are.”
