For a show that bases itself in pretty grounded realism, they should realize that it would be several days for even long-range missiles to reach Eros. It seemed like it was just over several hours in the show.

In universe the Epstein drive is capable of accelerating mass far beyond what your meat sack could handle. In missiles that's a non-issue. You also don't need to worry about breaking manoeuvres for literally half the journey.
>>
>>79774956
It takes 3 days to get to the freakin moon, the distance from Earth to Eros is still massive despite all the factors you pointed out. The missiles wouldn't be moving much faster than satellite probes which atm take weeks to get to those kind of distances, and I'm giving Expanse engine designs a benefit of a doubt.

What the hell was the point of the Drummer and Naomi girls night out scene? It didn't add to the plot whatsoever and they can't be teasing a lesbo romance because Naomi just fucked Holden at the time.

it takes longer in the book, obviously in the TV show they have compact events somewhat because they can't spread it over like five episodes

the missiles would be moving much much faster than any of your sat probes. in expanse they have fusion drives that can push 30-50g easily if they dont have to worry about people. propably more. with enough specific impulse to reach some meaningfull fraction of C, and they can take direct paths instead of slingshotting like contemporary spaceflight.
the missiles were there too fast still, but in expanse it only takes a few hours to get to the moon and a few days to get to mars if you try

I downloaded audiobook yesterday and listened for like 30 min
its ok
I guess I am buying ereader...

one thing that was interesting was that when Julie entered the reactor chamber on ship where she got infected, the protomolecule was like mud/flash, no mentioning of blue scienci-tv glow

the chapter ended when something separated from the mud, and float her way, it was severed head of one of the crew members. It said - Help Me.
>>

>>

>filler

That's what it looks like to showfags? Thing is advancing at near breakneck speeds, entire chapters are condensed to single conversations. Even the conversation themselves are on fast forward.

The actors in this show appear to be bad, but nobody can blame them since the script doesn't treat the characters well. Gotta talk fast, gotta talk a lot and you gotta do exposition dumps every three seconds.

>>79775794
Yes. Any time the engine is burning they are accelerating, and thus would feel the G force.
The max G's they could experience would depend how much thrust the engine is capable of producing, and the mass of the ship.

Also 20G acceleration is FAST AS FUCK. At that rate your velocity would increase by ~450mph every second.
>>
>>79776116
No, at those changes in acceleration speeds the cables, their mounts, or "claws/hooks" would fail structurally. 1g = 100lbs and 2g = 200lbs, but 15g = 1500lbs. Their cables would only be rated for moderate mooring stresses. One convincing autistic fan estimated the volume and mass of the ship to be 2670.7 cubic meters & 2.4 million kg (2,400 metric tons/5,291,094lbs). A change in as little as 1g would result in the mooring cables being stressed at 2,400 metric tons instantly. Even if you had 10 mooring cables, each would take on 240 metric tons instantly. A change of 5g would result in each of them taking on 1,200 metric tons.

Cables wouldn't work in the slightest if Eros increased its acceleration.
>>
>>79776498
I think the max a pilot in a modern pressurized flight suit can take is 8 or 9 before passing out. That's why they need the magic g juice in the series.
>>
>>79776449

Yeah, that. Pretty lame-o.

I wanted to see a ribcage floating on the mucus express to be repurposed into whatever. Going from the book's descriptions, in my mind, it was all quite mundane and matter of fact. It was a regular old place people used to live, now it's a regular old chaotic palace of flesh. You don't need color grading, excessive glowy shit and other exaggerations to bring the bizarre across. In fact, you're only dulling the bizarre.

Honestly, the show is a big disappointment to me. It's too gaudy.
>>
>>79776531
I wonder what that semen-looking fluid is supposed to do. The reason people pass out is lack of blood to the head. Thus, flight suits squeeze the rest of the body, especially the legs in order to keep blood in the head. They were jamming in a LOT of fluid. Pressure on the blood vessels and arteries must have been pretty extreme (I think some of them had nose bleeds?) It may also carry oxygen, otherwise, the dilution of the blood at that rate would make them pass out faster.

>>
>>79776754
I really don't get any System Shock vibes from The Expanse. Humans created SHODAN and a hacker released it from its safety protocols. It took over shit, digitized shit, and used the dead to make zombies and such. It didn't comes from an alien source. It wanted to kill humanity because it was inherently evil. There was no reasoning with it. The protomolecule seems to be indifferent to humanity, only using biomass to perform pre-programmed tasks. The woman's personality seems to be a side effect that isn't really a problem for the underlying commands of the protomolecule programming.

The Expanse and System Shock don't even have any grey goo vibes either. At least The Expanse doesn't after it gets past the initial biomass acquisition stage.

He's become a jaded old fuck. She represents everything he wishes he could be, even if he's not consciously aware of it. The show even took a step further to accentuate this by having Miller dress "earther" (nothing like this is mention in the books).

So one hand, you have a belter who wishes he was from earth because he fancies himself too intelligent and sophisticated to be a belter. In reality, he's a nobody. When it all comes crashing down on him, he becomes obsessed with the idea of this rich earther girl choosing to become a belter. So he basically sets out to do what she'd be proud to see him do. He's a bit warped so in Julie seeing good in the belt, he sees Julie seeing good in him.

I understand the basic differences, but the aesthetics and gimmicks are very similar, SS2 in particular. >>
The show annoys me in many ways. I'm not usually particularly anal about stupid shit, but I expect a fictional universe to establish a certain modicum of internal consistency. Doesn't have to literally be realistic, after all, the writers of The Expanse are very aware which aspects of their world stretch the boundaries of realism.

Gravity is particularly important to The Expanse, the point that the whole premise kinda revolves around it. The show follows suit, right? We even get that gimmicky shot with the whisky where the director was very proud to show off the coriolis effect. But then they just pick and choose how they want to portray gravity depending on budget allowances. You can't establish that belters are belters because they grew up in low gravity and then show us both low and the regular old earth gravity on Ceres at the same time. Jesus christ people, make up your minds. If you can't afford it, just don't do it. And don't do the show at all because this is kind of an important detail.

>the show shouldn't be made because they didn't get the gravity right on ceres!!!
>>
>>79779579

The show makes a big deal about how belters have to live in space. It goes right for the jugular and actually spells it out for you with the gravity torture scene with Avasarala (which wasn't in the books).

But then they just ignore it in the actual scenes showing the belt and belters. Worse yet, they actually half ignore it and show things like the coriolis effect on Ceres.

This is not the biggest flaw of the show though.

In order to do that they'd need to either use some wire work or build entire sets that are centrifuges. While that would be great, I don't think they'd be able to do it because of budget constraints. Which would result in the early cancellation of the show.

I'm not dumb, I realize that. So, as I said, don't do it.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but it's a bit like if GoT didn't have armor sets because of budget constraints and we were expected to imagine them.
>>
>>79779778

that's some classic video footage
>>
How hard would you punch Holden if you had the chance?
>>
>>79779799
That's a bad comparison since most armor on tv shows are hand me downs from older shows and movies. A giant centrifuge for a single set would blow all of GoT's budget for a single episode and then some. The one in 2001 cost $5.2mil in today's money and it was extremely limited.

I want that too, but damn it would be unrealistic without some serious fucking backing.

The "crash couches" they sit in rotate so they're not sitting headfirst to keep the blood somewhat near where it needs to be.

The drug stuff thins the blood to make it easier to pump about, does stuff to buff their heart and tons of uppers to keep them awake among over spacemagic things.

In the high-g scenes they shouldn't even be talking, they have keyboards in the handholds to type out messages without moving their arms.
(I tried googling but couldn't find what I was looking for, there used to be a playstation controller shaped keyboard where you held it with both hands and it had see-saw buttons for each letter, and they were all over the back of the controller. Basically like that but for typing messages out while tripping balls on juice.)

It's annoying that they turned Amos into a psychopathic autist rather than a gigantic manchild like he is in the books.

>Amos had spent thirty grand during a stopover on Callisto, buying them some after-market engine upgrades. When Holden pointed out that the Roci was already capable of accelerating fast enough to kill her crew and asked why they’d need to upgrade her, Amos had replied, “Because this shit is awesome.” Holden had just nodded and smiled and paid the bill.

She's a socially awkward lady past middle age. Half of her 'heroic acts' are done under influence after her friend injected her with too much drugs. When she is sober and shit really hits the fan basically all she can do is be scared and talk. She's good at talking, but that's not implausible, after all she has years of experience at that. That she ends up talking to the right person at the right time is in no way indicative of any superpowers. And if you pasty autistic neet weakling think that tazing some really stupid redneck, who lets himself be trolled and distracted, is 'superhero' shit, I feel bad for you.

Why do people say his visions of Julie are the protomolecule? lol spoilers, in the second book near the end Holden begins seeing Miller pop up, and in the subsequent novels we learn the protomolecule put a protomolecule-wifi-hotspot on his ship and is using it to broadcast into his brain whatever it needs him to see (the investigator as Miller) but all the events with Julie precede this. It's because he's literally just a man at the end of the road. Finding Julie and saving her was his obsession, with his entire life falling apart at the same time. Getting kicked off the Roci was the final straw. The books do a better job of explaining this I guess.

Miller is hallucinating Julie because he's starting to feel suicidal. It's why he chooses to stay on Eros in the books. I have no idea why they changed it to him having to stay behind when the entire purpose of the decision is to show us he feels beyond redemption. The thing with the nuke in a cart is him, he thinks, doing what Julie might of wanted him to do. In the books he's sitting in a bar and he hears her voice say "You belong with me" (glad they added this bit of dialogue) and it gives him a nasty start, because he knows as an ex-cop in his position there's a good chance he'll eat the barrel of his own gun.

In the book Miller asks Holden where to send Eros, if it can't return to Earth. And he responds "give it Venus" (paraphrasing)

Basically Miller voluntarily joins with the protomolecule, because he has no where else to go and that close to Julie, maybe he can convince her to change course. i think it's pretty clear he does, either by reasoning or by becoming a hivemind with her.

In the second book there's talk about what Venus means for humanity. Chrisjen likens it to "having God in your backyard". Everyone can see the protomolecule doing weird shit on Venus, but no one can do anything about it. Venus is still complete inhospitable, no one can go down there even for a quick jaunt. It's forbidden territory. They're at the mercy of whatever it is and decides to do.

Also the second book is really great, about on par with the first.

It's all set too early in the space exploration/colonisation push for there to be fleet-sized engagements. Both Mars and Earth's fleets might number a couple of dozen frigate/destroyer class of ship each, with a few dozen more of the tiny patrol stuff. No stonking huge battleships as yet - the Donnager was the biggest and best in the system at this particular time.

Here's the full battle:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpfCkkKP9eE

>"Incoming drive flare signature, Captain."
>"NP. We got this."
>"Actually it's not one ship, it's six disguising their drive signatures as one craft."
>"We still got this."
>"They've launched missiles."
>"Return fire. We've still got this easy."
>"Their missiles are a bit more advanced and are giving our PDCs targeting algorithms trouble. We've taken hits and have lost an engine."
>"Unexpected, but if they keep screaming in at us like this they've be in railgun range soon. Still got it."
>"Destroyed two with the railguns, but they've opened fire with railguns of their own."
>"WTF? - on ships that tiny?. Okay, this is getting serious."
>"Nailed two more but they're launching boarding pods.
>"Ah fuck this! " *nukes self*
>>
>>79784232
I don't mind the way they did it in the show, but I liked it better in the book when they made it clear that the Donnager lost because of its lack of escorts (as nobody expected it to get attacked when it went out on its mission) and not because the stealth ships are unexpectedly super advanced.

I'm in the middle of Babylons Ashes so maybe it comes up but the fact that no one seems to even think about the fact that Venus might just BTFO the entire solar system at any minute is kind of weak.

Also why are the belters such cry faggots about the gate? Don't they realize space freight industries, pure belter specialty, is about to explode in demand?

I'm sure that's an open possibility, but even if it were known as a fact, what could humanity possibly do? Launch the entirety of their nuke arsenal at Venus, maybe. Then they have zero nukes and potentially a pissed-off planet.

I mean, a solar flare could send us back to the stone age RIGHT NOW but humans keep trucking along and shitposting on 4chan like the lights will never go out. That's the natural state of things.

It does have an elevator. Starting from the top there's the pilot's seat, the bridge, crew bunks, mess hall, then I think engineering/cargo/etc with the machine shop at the bottom.
>>
>>79784700
Speak for yourself. I got some good preps going.

Also an EMP (solar flare or man made) wouldn't send us back to the stone age, just the steam age, say 1870s or so.

Don't think they'll show us the interior design. Two airlocks, the bit Amos almost died in was near one of the lower PDC retractable areas. I'm imagine it's all laid out along the central core: bridge, living quarters, life support, engine room. Pretty much most of what you see in these pix are bolt on weapons, thruster, and sensor modules.
>>
>>79784800
who the fuck told you there are no ayys?
>>
>>79784793
For some people, yeah. But there's not a whole lot of steam infrastructure left in the world. For the bulk of humanity, before any sort of rebuild effort, it's going to be life as a caveman.

If you have a shop with lathes than don't run on electricity, you'll be a target.

Nah my main utility skill wise is in the antiquated mechanics department. Carburetors, breaker points, that kind of stuff. Plus I can and have converted several small engines to run on what is basically moonshine.

That and my stockpile of small arms of course.
>>
>>79784800
The Epstein drive is the least egregious magicking in this show. It's just a very efficient rocket engine. It uses propellant and provides a variable amount of thrust. I operate on the idea that humanity will absolutely invent a rocket and engine of this capability, because our survival basically depends on it.

I'd say the best thing about the show is it's dogmatic application of Newtonian physics to life in space. Practically every sci-fi show is completely cavalier when it comes to something as basic as gravity. It's refreshing to have a show where it's treated not just with respect, but as a plot device.
