Which is better: creating a film with a truly original concept, or a film that does an excellent job of executing a cliched concept?
A movie without black people.

Watch the edge there kid!

Depends on the concept, but generally a movie that executes a concept well is going to be better liked. Remember; it's not who did it first, but who did it best that people remember.
I've seen really shitty movies that were very original in their ideas... As much as I think Hollywood is overrun with remakes and low risk investments, I can't sit through another Kevin Smith movie
even if the idea has been done to death execution really is everything
look at something like the first 10 minutes of the lego batman movie as an example of that

I want to say "don't reinvent the wheel", but I'll take a few shitty movies if I can get one incredible original idea a few times a year

yes

Bring proper bantz or don't bother at all.

execution
it can tear down movies with good ideas and concepts and spring up movies that are unoriginal

The former because it is more likely to produce the latter eventually.

>creating a film with a truly original concept,
Well, this says nothing of the execution, so that in and of itself can go either way.
or a film that does an excellent job of executing a cliched concept?
This, if it's good, it's good. Talented writers and directors can breathe new life into tired concepts, reinvigorate whole genres.

Both can be good
Honestly, I'm tempted to go with the cliched concept because pulling that off masterfully is impressive as hell - eg Hell or High Water
Whereas, there are bullshit indie films every year with original concepts that boil down to self-praising wank
