Because they overemote. Look at the scene where Tarkin and Krennic are talking. Every line done by Tarkin is such an endeavor, like all of his muscles are always doing something. Meanwhile when Krennic speaks it becomes obvious that humans don't use that many muscles in their face just talking to each other. It's funny, now a big problem with CGI is that there are TOO many options to use so artists do absolutely everything they can and it ends up looking worse than if they'd scaled it back. That and lighting which is never done amazingly well

They may all be bad, but not for the same reasons. The prequels lack basic story structure and are incredibly difficult to follow. Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid were the only reason they weren't complete flops. The OT is only really guilty of being too fast and loose with the plot while focusing almost entirely on the characters. Disney went with the OT formula for TFA, but JJ's scientific illiteracy makes the movie seem more juvenile at times than what was intended.

It is not a CGI character, it is de-aged Michael Douglas and another actor who looks like him composited together.
