Jenkins has some skill in getting performances from his actors, but as a storyteller and cinematic craftsman, on the basis of this movie he's amateurish. This movie, like Boyhood, didn't really have anything to say. The boy is uninteresting and remains so as a teen and young man, and the sensitive mounting of the issue of his sexuality doesn't inherently make the movie more valuable as an artistic endeavor.

The problem is movies these days either focus solely on the screenplay and put no effort into the visuals, put all effort into the visuals with little care for the screenplay, or are just blockbuster shit.

There are very few complete movies these days. Fuck I think the best year for cinema recently was 2010 because it had a shit-ton of movies that were gorgeously shot AND had great stories. The past couple of years have been shit because we're losing this balance. That's why I enjoy older films, because directors back then tended to find the perfect strike between story and visual beauty.

Also to appeal to the ADHD generation films are edited in such a way that all films seem to feel rushed and disjointed.

In general, 2001 has done the same basic thing with regards to sound, editing and lighting. 300 is also a very modern example of the basic principle of swapping between a character reacting and a character acting, in slow-motion with the only sound being the music

I assume I don't need to mention the numerous films that have divided themselves into 3 different parts of a character's life. Or on that note, the numerous films about a disillusioned child who's mentored by a wise street-smart older man.

It's a good movie, but the first 2 acts are horribly boring and the dude's mother is a terrible actress. Unfortunately the 3rd act is so 10/10 that it just saves the whole movie since all the pieces fall together and the character arc wraps up.

That said, I watched all the Oscar nominees and I don't care how subjective this argument is, but Moonlight is the one that stuck with me the most: for the next 3 days the jukebox scene kept playing in my head because I loved it that much. It used dull browns and greys and was still visually amazing. Maybe you want to claim Tarkovsky did that before, but the mood was so different that it didn't feel so.

Or take the Neon Demon. Again, ignoring whether or not you think it's a good film, it's visual language was leagues above anything this year. The are allusions to Jodorowsky, but they're not overt. There are obvious similarities to its inspirations like Valley of The Dolls or even Black Swan, but the film carries it all out in such a different way such that it felt like it was forwarding the conversation instead of just stagnating

But with Moonlight, there was nothing that made me sit up and feel impressed with how it handled anything. Everything good that it did, as I said, has been done before. And to go further, it's been done better before. On a technical level, Moonlight felt like 3 film-school-graduate short films sewn together. On a story level, the most interesting aspects were the parts barely shown or not shown at all while the main story was underwhelming

There's a difference between doing something badly and doing it offensively
Take a generic kids film like Storks: the story is generic as can be with very predictable humour and the usual plot beats. I couldn't call that a good story or good writing. But I don't dislike the film for that, it's still serviceable
But then take a film like Civil War: the characters' motivations are inconsistent with the mcu beforehand, the bad-guy can apparently predict the future, every character has layer upon layer of plot armour. That's not serviceable and actively makes the film worse

And the same applies for technical aspects
The cinematography in Keanu is nothing special. But it works, it's properly exposed and it's clear. Conversely, Taken 3 is a mess of quick-cuts, shaky-cam, continuity errors and dullness. And this applies to sound design, costumes, set-design etc

So if everything's mediocre/bad except the given element, then I'd take cinematography, sound etc as the sum total of all of that creates a more engaging film. Drive is a very generic film in terms of writing, but the other elements elevate it into something I consider amazing. The same goes for Hell or High Water
But if everything's actively shit except for the given element, then I'd take story as more important. Because a film littered with plot holes and constant suspension of logic will make it impossible for me to take it seriously. But something really well-written can engage me even if the image is overexposed and the soundtrack's appalling

One of the most forgettable, least interesting film of last year. The two leads had no chemistry and to me neither one of them were even all that good - Gosling is always meh, but all the plaudits around Emma Stone baffle me.
