Great movie. Garfield is excellent. The battle scene is probably one of the best battle scenes of modern war movies.
Doubly impressive since it's a true story and Desmond's actions show the true power of faith.
Everything Gibson touches turns to gold.

Unashamedly corny with great action scenes.
It's enjoyable but critics haven overrated it for reasons I don't understand, since they normally hate these movies.

Undoubtedly this. If 5/10 is average this movie is barely a 5.5. The acting feels like typical "true story" movies and doesn't feel like real people. Action scenes were pretty good, but other war films have depicted violence far better. The criticism of the grenade scene and the screaming Japanese soldier scene are unwarranted since both are done well enough to not seem unbelievable. The movie did not make me feel anything. I only felt sadness or empathy comparing what I saw on screen to the actual events that took place, not from the movie itself. If I had no idea this actually happened, the entire film would come off as cheesy. The movie does a poor job of making characters feel like anything more than stereotypes or tropes before killing them off. There's barely any development of any character within the film. Whether intentional or not, it makes the film feel worse. The interviews at the end had me tearing up more than any scene from the actual movie.
Does it deserve something like an Oscar? Hell no. If the Oscars didn't circlejerk over WW2 "True Story" films it would have never been nominated.

BRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

He apologised but it's not like he didn't mean any of it. He still produces kino and quite frankly Hollywood needs people like Mel.

It was fantastic, best kino of 2016 next to ShinGoji and Your Name.
Battle scenes were stylized to show the horrors of war, in particular how brutal it would appear for the average combatant.
Doss' actions were downplayed in the film, and not as good as his achievements in life.

I think if you leave your cynicism at the door you will enjoy this movie. It's cheesy but major Hollywood production about the power of personal sacrifice motivated by faith will be.
Yes, the battle scenes have some goofy elements but you quickly forget them in the overall chaos.

Is this a fucking comedy? I sure do hope so.
