It's a movie about how gentrification and Ed Koch fucked up Brooklyn by building tenements for people who don't work and are content to laze around drinking beer and causing petty mischief. When non-whites take over neighborhoods, the stubborn Italians are typically the last to leave. This represents Sal and his family, who defiantly stay in their deteriorating neighborhood because Sal believes he is doing the community a service with his pizza. In reality, he is just prolonging the inevitable. Additionally with these tensions, there is a massive heat wave going on, a militant agitator named Buggin' Out (with his big dumb cohort Radio Raheem), and a growing gap between the past and the present. Something had to give.
