So, why didn't Sauron try to get these two on his team? I mean, Sauron had to personally know Smaug and Durin's Bane since they all served under Morgoth's reign.
I know Gandal feared that Smaug would join Sauron... but Sauron lived relatively near the Lonely Mountain, and in the 100+ years between Smaug taking over Erebor and him getting killed by Bard, the fucker never knocked on his door to say hi.
Fucking nerd.

>the fucker never knocked on his door to say hi.
Why would he? Gandalf knew he was prepping for war, and took out Smaug before he was able to utilise him. That's like, the main reason why The Hobbit exists as a story.
>Durin's Bane
Free being of his own right probably capable of wrecking Sauron. He killed Gandalf.
Nobody fucking knew that Durin's Bane was a Balrog.

A balrog is a Maiar. Sauron was also a maiar.
If you had a rumpus with the Big Dick of Evil, Melkor, why would you ever bend the knee to your bootlicking brother-in-law that thinks he can one-up the OG Bad Boy?
Why does the West-gate say "Aran Moria" on its inscription? Moria is a negative term meaning Black Chasm. It should say "Aran Hadhodrond."

What did Maura Labingi mean by this?

Basically, until LOTR's events, Sauron was barely a shadow. Recuperating and trying to raise Mordor though his will.
His will is good to influence nazghul and orcs, because he is basically their master, but you'd need more than that to influence a dragon to ally with you. They are vicious, and full of themselves.
For Durin's Bane, nobody knew it was even there. It had been forgotten since Morgoth's time in the depths of the earth. If it had been known and more accessible, we can guess it would have joined Sauron.

Tolkien briefly wrote about Gandalf´s concern that Sauron would ally himself with Smaug. Also there may have been some contact with the Balrog - the Orcs in Moria had taken what treasures they had found in the vast ruins to Barad-dur.
Also it´s generally more constructive to ask lore questions on /tg/ as more people there have actually read the literature and some skimmed some fucking wiki articles. That or /lit/, when they´re in the mood for it.

not skimmed some fucking wiki articles*
