Ok so Julius was a straight OG
He was captured by pirates as a youngish man
This was "normal" in those days.
Pirates were a big thing and some city state economies were based around piracy

So he was captured and they knew he was from a rich family.
They tried to ransom him.
Caesar read their demands and rejected it
He said "If you're going to ransom me, you're going to do it at a good price" so he had them increase the cost
The pirates loved him for it
He read them poetry and joked around while he was their captive
Every so often he'd laugh and say "You know, when I get home, I'm going to kill all of you"
They laughed, he laughed
They were friends now

So his family sent the ransom and he was set free.
Then he gathered up an army and hunted down the pirates and crucified every last one of them.

Caesar didn't fucking play.

This was true in his military life
He's obviously famous for conquering Gaul
When he had the Gallic leadership cornered, he laid siege.
He knew reinforcements were coming, so he ordered another siege to be laid
On the the outside.
So it was Celts, Romans, and then Celts again between the walls

He won that double siege and then controlled all of Gaul

When he was sending a force to Britain (or was it Africa, I forget?) he tripped leaving his landing boat.
He fell face first onto the sand
Caesar recovered by saying "Oh land, I had missed you so. Let me embrace you"
His troops laughed and laughed and loved him even more

It's been said a few times that Caesar was the luckiest fucker in history

On multiple occasions he took on odds that were against him and yet still came on top

Like when he fought Pompey and the Optimates in Asia Minor
He was out numbered and still on

Even his out numbering was fortunate.
Caesar crossed the Adriatic in winter
Which was storm time and no one did that
This was in the show too, where Pullo and Vorenus were shipwrecked.
But the show didn't even emphasize how bold it was to even try and how Caesar landed with fewer troops than the Optimates and yet still won

Caesar's whole career is full of "No, he won't win. Oh shit, he won"

>>
>>79673563
Romans were very good at fighting battles where they had the initiative and control
If you have a 100,000 mob of berserkers versus 10,000 roman Legionnaires, the Legion would win

If you fight the Romans on their grounds, they win. Absolutely.
Look at the Boudicca rebellion in Britian.
Something like 100,000 celts vs 1000 Romans
Romans loss less than 100 with 10s of thousands of dead Celts

Legion/Maniple system fucking worked

However, the Parthians were horsemen and that overcame the shieldwall technique
Parthians were particularly bitches. That's why their name is lended to the "Parthian retreat", that is to shoot backwards as you run away

The Teutons were only victorious because of the traitor Arminius. He was raised Roman despite his Germanic roots.
He was the adviser to Varus, the Roman general in Germania.
He led the Roman legions into a swamp where he had his primitive disgusting friends ambush the Romans.
It was a huge defeat that destroyed Rome's advance into Germany.

The thing about the Germans and other hordes is that they were uncoordinated
A few Roman legions could take on 10x their forces in battle and lose single digits.

But as time went on, the savages learned to coordinate.
The Romans taught their enemies how to beat them.
So when the barbs attacked, they attacked as one.
This is why the Roman solid border system had to be changed under Aurelian, Restorer of the World.

Caesar constantly refers to the Gauls as being great warriors and having pretty shrewd tactics as well. If all the tribes ever united they'd be a serious threat and almost ended Caesar at Alesia when they did unite.

The reason why he was able to conquer Gaul was because the tribes were disunited and he was able to conquer them individually while using underhanded tricks and diplomacy to turn them against one another, ally with him or otherwise keep them from uniting for long enough until he'd conquered enough of Gaul for any serious resistance to be futile. Caesar was as much a politician as a general and his conquest of Gaul was more of due to the his gift in the former in my opinion.

My favourite Emperor is Hadrian

His career really started out with Trajan and Trajan really had is roots in the chaos of the Year of Four Emperors
After that Year, the Flavian dynasty began.
And when that dynasty fell, the Senate wanted a strong military leader
So they with Trajan, a Hispanic provincial

Hadrian was later than that
Trajan was dying after expanding the borders of the Empire greater than it ever had before
He did not like Hadrian
Hadrian was his nephew and in that time, that was pretty close
So Hadrian had some privileges in Rome despite being from Hispania.

Trajan did not like Hadrian because Hadrian was an academic. He loved to read and so the loved the Greeks.
Trajan was a military man to the core.

There is a conspiracy theory that Trajan did not nominate Hadrian at all for his successor.
Trajan died during his voyage home from Mesopotamia and Arabia and it was his wife who said Hadrian should be the next Emperor
This makes a lot of sense since Hadrian and his Great Aunt were the same age and were friends

That woman made Rome great again.
So Hadrian was made Emperor
That bookish lawyer with acne who was a greekaboo

But he did it
He sacrificed ego (e.g. in rebuilding the Parthenon and the Temple to Venus) and travelled to every province finding out what was wrong and what needed fixing

Along the way, he found his "gay" lover, Antinoos.
This is a big question about his character because was Hadrian really attracted to cocks and balls or did he just like the svelte young body of a young boy?
Regardless, Antinoos was his lover and famous for it too
It was "normal" for a Roman elite man to have a boy "lover" but it wasn't common for them to announce it and show him off along side his wife.
Hadrian did so.

But Antinoos killed himself in the Nile. Some say it was because he was getting older and uglier and would be eventually rejected by Hadrian
Some say that Hadrian's advisors drowned Antinoos in the river

Friend and I have about three episodes left in the series.

It's got some good moments, some great moments, but the intermingling of the real moments with the fictional moments doesn't work out too well. In that finale, it really bothered me that Caesar getting assassinated was interspersed with Vorenus' wife killing herself, like that's supposed to be on the same level. Vorenus' and Pullo's stories feel like soap operas. It's all just too much.

I feel like the show would be better if we didn't see too much of Vorenus' and Pullo's personal lives, like they'd still be the main characters, but it'd be more like we see them and learn insight into Caesar and Augustus and all of them through the eyes of these two plebs.
