Hollywood execs can be some of the most dumbest people who don't understand the public.

But then they sit in a room trying to make their movie make billions at the box office so if you did that for 20+ years you are sure to be broken deeply inside and not care about art anymore.

I will never understand why this happens.
Just make a new god damn story. There is literally a 0% chance that this film will be as good as or better than the old one, so it will be discussed only in that context, and that will not help.
I get it, if some sensitive little shits cant relate to a movie because none of the rabbits are girls, whatever. I slightly see where that comes from, but for fucks sake you are setting yourself up for failure if the route you take is a reboot of literally one of the greatest animated films of all time.

They are rabbits. They don't need identity politics and "positive role models." In the book they don't even care who joins their new warren and only while they already reached Watership Down they realized they need does. Lack of females is an important plot point. There are like two named females in the story. One is a farm rabbit and the other actually becomes quite involved in the action and in the end becomes Hazel's mate I believe but I may be wrong.

Children's media should challenge children in a way that makes them intellectually active.

THAT BEING SAID, HOWEVER, after watching the 1978 version of Watership Down, I never considered it a "children's film", nor a movie appropriate for children. While I don't think movies should be sanitized for children, I feel like the 1978 version of Watership Down would fuck up younger children, and there's more appropriate material for that demographic out there.
I've always viewed it as a strange piece of adult-oriented animation art-film that just happens to feature characters that we're USED to seeing in children's movies, i.e. talking rabbits.
I always viewed the movie itself closer to something like The Animatrix than to Winnie the Pooh, just like the novel it is based on is far closer to Animal Farm than it is to Peter Cottintale.

That being said, they need to not remake this for children.
Don't dumb-down/soften the original that wasn't intended for kids anyway. Adapt some other, more appropriate IP for television.

yeah honest to fucking god the reboot/remake scene is absolutely out of control at this point; i really, really, REALLY feel as if execs were idly flipping through old influential and impactful animated series and films to appropriate and pasteurise for modern children's cinema using modern ideals of equality and G-rated wholesome fun, and somehow without even understanding what they were looking at decided that this was the piece that would make bank.
who the fuck would even consider watching a toned-down watership down when you take into account the horribly scarring reputation it already has? clearly a lot of people haven't heard of this, since there was whatever twitter scandal of people being shocked and offended after watching it over easter. what parents will there be, however, who look up this amazing new movie Watership Down and find the articles stating how disturbing the original was? will they want to watch the remake? probably fucking not, but remake culture goes on.

I think it's fucking horseshit. Yeah, Watership Down was a deceptive and terrifying film. It's also one of the best and most emotional animated films ever made.

I read Watership Down, and it's a fascinating novel. The rabbits have language, religion, and social structure all derived from actual rabbit behaviour.

I remember very clearly that there's an extended squence wherein the Protagonist rabbit dreams of the black rabbit of Inle, a mimic of our Grim Reaper and sort of a trickster like Loki, who advises him on his current predicament.

Point being, it's been ages since I read the book, but it' s simply not a children's story. It's closer to Lord of The Rings than Briar Rabbit. Stop dumbing things down for the already stupid kids.

Nothing here says it's a children's book/for children except for when talking about its reception. Just because it features bunnies people not only assume it's for children but are willing to dumb it down for kids.

Fuck this world.

>I feel like the 1978 version of Watership Down would fuck up younger children

Children are much tougher than you think.
>>
>>79661315
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watership_Down#Criticism_of_gender_roles

The 1993 Puffin Modern Classics edition of the novel contains an afterword by Nicholas Tucker, who wrote that stories such as Watership Down "now fit rather uneasily into the modern world of consideration of both sexes". He contrasted Hazel's sensitivity to Fiver with the "far more mechanical" attitude of the bucks towards does, who Tucker considers are portrayed as "little more than passive baby-factories".[39]

In "Male Chauvinist Rabbits", an essay originally published in the New York Times Book Review, Selma G. Lanes observed that the does are only "instruments of reproduction" to prevent the achievement of reaching Watership Down from "becoming a hollow victory".[40] Lanes argued that this view of the female rabbits came from Adams himself rather than his source text, Ronald Lockley's The Private Life of the Rabbit in which the rabbit world is matriarchal, and new warrens are always initiated by dissatisfied, young females.[41]

In similar vein, literary critic Jane Resh Thomas stated that Watership Down "draws upon ... an anti-feminist social tradition which, removed from the usual human context and imposed upon rabbits, is eerie in its clarity". Thomas also called it a "splendid story" in which "anti-feminist bias ... damages the novel in only a minor way".[42] She later explained: "I was angry and hurt when I read the book.... I felt he [Adams] had treated me and my kind with a contempt I couldn't be silent about."[43]

Adams' 1996 sequel, Tales from Watership Down includes stories where the female rabbits play a more prominent role in the Watership Down warren. It has been suggested that this might have been an attempt to modernise the story, to make it more in tune with the political sensibilities of the 1990s, when it was published.[44]

Good, Watership Down is fucked up. Nobody wants to watch poor little animated rabbits in those situations.
>>

The fact that the rabbits go through that shit is what makes the story so strong. The happy endings never feel earned in children's movies anymore
>>
>>79662041
Just because it ultimately makes the character(s) strong doesn't mean I want to see it. Just like I don't want to see a man get his penis cut off and his teeth violently pulled out even if it makes him strong and allows him to grow in the end. Just the same as A Serbian Film, it doesn't bother me one bit and there is some stuff it does well, doesn't mean I want to see it again.

Children aren't allowed to feel anything any more
Just sterilise those imaginations with tablets so the parents can do what they want without the hassle of being involved
I genuinely feel sorry for little kids who are going to grow up just staring at screens and devices all the time. It's a fun time-killer when you're old enough, but they're missing out on kid stuff. Every child I know under ten is obsessed with watching shit on a tablet and it's fucking tragic. There's plenty of time for that when you're older, go climb a fucking tree with your pals
>>
>>79657457

Why does this shit keep happening?

Original BFG: Giants were scary as fuck
Remake: Giants were comical buffoons

What's so wrong with scaring children?

>remake had perfect casting and performance for the BFG
>was let down by being overly bloated and not scary enough

Why do Americans struggle so hard to capture the spirit of Dahl books? Willy Wonka's chocolate factory (and the remake), The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda (perfect Trunchbull) , US BFG... None of them properly capture the themes and messages of his books.

It's because any of the Anglo Saxon works first have to go through the outlook of a Jewish movie executive/producer/director before being made into a film.

Americans can't fully comprehend British culture, especially literary works from the early to mid 20th century.

It's all about a shekel grab and poisoning young minds with Judeo-Marxist propaganda.

what the fuck is the point

watership down has a message

if you want to convey a different one, make a new goddamn film

i'm not against the idea of female heroics, but i don't see how this heavy-handed shoehorning is supposed to be the answer, especially when it usurps the original point of an already excellent film in the process

if female empowerment and sensitivity to violence are important to you, make your own movie that gets those points across
