Favorite to me means you should ask what movie you enjoy the most, what's most entertaining to you. Something you never get tired of watching.

This can prove to be unrelated to a film's actual quality as a work of art.

Just say Pulp Fiction or Fight Club. You're young enough that those movies are starting to be left out of the conversation anyways.

Maybe back in the 1960s. But these days, it's almost expected that you go to University. It's pretty out of the ordinary to not have at least a Bachelor's.

It's not like everyone is studying STEM either, a lot of people just want the "college experience" and go do pointless shit like "African studies" or "18th century English literature".

Conan is pretty reasonably acclaimed, and directed by Milius, who's a true "70s cinema revivalist" auteur. I'm a senior getting my degree in film and now, as upperclassmen, people are finally getting less pretentious and are actually fun to work with. Creative, passionate, and pretty chill.

As a freshman, though, everyone was like OP's class pretty much.

>Intro to Film Studies class
>"Let's go around the room and say your favorite film"
>People saying either film schoolcore movies just to impress the professor who literally couldn't care less
>"Aguirre the Wrath of God!"
>"Au Revoir, les Enfants!"
>"Gosh, I don't think I can choose between Knight of Cups and The Tree of Life!"
>Gets to me
>Say "The Graduate"
>No one says anything except the professor who smiles
>"Oh man, that's one of my all-time favorites."
>halfway into that year, he structures an entire editing lesson around the cuts in "The Graduate"

I can't tell if normies whose favorite movies are stuff like The Dark Knight or Love, Actually or anything with Jennifer Lawrence or pretentious filmies who claim they just LOVE the mise-en-scene of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or the usage of contrast and color in Kurosawa's Throne of Blood or whatever.

Like, I love a lot of normie films and I also love a lot of filmic shit, but on.

Can you name a single movie that normies actually DO understand? Protip: I don't think you can.

Have you ever tried watching a movie with a normie? I don't know if it's hormonal or something, but their minds are literally unable to focus on anything.

Have you ever known a normie that had a deep and varied appreciation for any art? Digging around obscure music genres or old filmographies, just for the sake of it and love of the medium, not for potential social status and superficial validation?

When a cinephile watches a movie, he reflects on the themes and subtext, deconstruct the mise en scène and cinematography in order to analyze how the director's choices affect the mood and characters arcs, question the ethos it proposes about its subject matters, judge its authenticity, come up with a list of intertextual references that deepen his understanding, examine the narrative structure as if he were in the writer's head to get his creative process and where he's headed, all this while sensorially appreciating the aesthetics, marveling at the layers in dialogues and noticing many odd details, pondering how this film overall fits into its auteur's oeuvre, observing what it does similarly and what it does differently... as well as its place in film history, among many other active ways of studying and appreciating art... meanwhile normies can barely follow the plot.

well if this board is any indication of what 'art house bull' is we're talking about shit like wernor herzog, lars von trier and kurosawa. which are really the most entry level of directors for people who want to take a step outside their comfort zone.

so you probably just don't care about movies as much as you think you do. there's nothing wrong with that. it's just that you've mistaken your tastes for comfy movies and the enjoyment you get with talking to people with similar tastes as being passionate about movies.

it would be like me saying i'm hugely into baseball because i like to go watch games with my dad, despite having no fucking idea who the players on the team or let alone can name you any fucking teams besides the popular ones. no, i just love the atmosphere of being in a crowded stadium, shooting the shit with my dad and eating cheap food.

I'm going to film school next year and now you all have me really worried about what I'll say my favorite film is.

I have a lot of films I really like. If you asked me in a pinch I'd probably say interstellar because I love that sort of time travel interdimensional space shit, and the movie's very beautifully made. But I like a lot of other movies almost as much.

I'd probably be unable to choose between John Wick 2 and Interstellar desu.
>>
>>79649791
The correct answer is Once Upon a Time in the West or Waterworld. Any other answer is foolish.

This happened in the cinema history class that started this month. Transfer requirement course. Professor went around the room asking what we liked.

I just said Good Will Hunting.

>wow, really?

Look, we could talk about Kurosawa and Hitchcock until were blue in the face, but that movie is the one that resonated with me growing up and inspired me to make my own films. I seriously respect what they accomplished and aspire to make something with the same amount of impact. I mean, they won a bunch of awards and launched their careers with that film. I only wish I could do the same.

>Oh... yeah, I see what you mean... you said you like Kurosawa- Nice! Which films?

Yeah, Yojimbo is a cool film...

>That's amazing! Along with Kagemusha and Ran- class, we are going to watch those films this semester and I want you to pay attention to Kurosawa's work. Thanks for bringing it up!

They don't even have you be particularly in-depth or analytical, it could be something like "I just like the world of the film" or "I find the characters really engaging in a way most movie characters aren't"

They're both pretty "socially acceptable" answers but even if they weren't, it shouldn't stop you.

The main problem is that idiots go in them not knowing jack shit about film, they expect to come out having learned everything, and when their carriers fail, they blame film school.
Film school is more of a springboard where you can make contacts with the students and get access to equipment you wouldn't have on your own. But you have to go in already with at least a bit of experience in film (this is practically a requirement now).
For those who can't just "go into film" its a solid place to start if you know how to play their game and you have a plan.
And you really have to make sure you pick the right school for what you want to do.
I've been in England for the past two weeks just visiting film schools and speaking to a lot of people and I'd say most of them are fucking horrible but there are good ones.
Basically, I'd advice you to go on film school if you need to get started. Just please for the love of god have a back-up plan and experience, otherwise you are just wasting money and time

I was metophircally on the edge of my seat watching John Wick 2. I thought he was going to die at any moment in every action scene I've never felt suspense before until this movie. It was really good except my girlfriend walked out because she thought I was checking out the bathtub lady but I was really just falling asleep because it wasn't an action scene and I went out looking for her and I was crying in the rain but then i turned a corner and she turned the other corner at the same time and we were both heading to the car because she was just going to the bathroom and couldn't find me and thought maybe I left and it was a big misunderstanding and I love my gf :3

also

>going to film school
>not going to film
>>
>>79646411
You're cool, OP. I admire that response.

Anyways, going to film school is a big mistake. Same goes for art school and writing classes, it'll fuck up your creative process up the ass something bad, it's a really horrible place to be if you're genuinely naturally creative/talented and the whole reason these institutions exist is to teach psuedo-intellectual hipster normies how to think and how to create and make their subpar ideas come to life because they're too fucking dull, pretentious and mentally limited to be able to come up with anything by themselves. Film schools are where people with legitimate skills get taught that those skills mean nothing so the art house retards can feel good about the utter drivel they produce. Leave now before too much damage is done to your head. Just trust me on that and don't question it too much.

There are tens of thousands of film graduates every year. Dozens at each top school. If even 1% of grads are given some contact help, it is still nothing.

If you are a director or producer, and somehow calls and recommends you, what do you objectively think will happen? They give you a chance to write a script? Do cinematography? Even scout locations? Not a chance...not even a runner to get coffee.

They already have their people that they have worked with comfortably before. They don't need your over eager, try hard, look at me, ambitious bullshit. They have a job to do.

You need a rich daddy to help fund small films to show talent. You need an uncle who is big in the industry. You need a top class whore to teach you to give good blowjobs and take cock in the ass.

You don't need film school.

Film history is fun for a humanities core

At least compared to crap like art history where you try to figger out who drew what penis

We had to do movie critiques of films we watched and basically the professor said

"please dont give me boring reviews that kiss ass to Casablanca and citizen Kane, they all sound the same, watch something you want to watch"

Unironically, get the fuck out of this board. You clearly don't actually like movies.

You've, just like literally everyone, occasionally catched a few popular films and you enjoyed your time. But you've never invested yourself in cinema. So why the fuck are you on a board discussing it if you don't know shit about it and have never tried to?

How the fuck is Interstellar still your favourite film then
I just can't comprehend it. That's, visuals aside, a very mediocre film with classic Nolan writing and "subtlety"
