Brad Pitt's character is hella impulsive as shown previously and as he finds out what happened the guy responsible for it is right beside him smiling, the first reaction is to end his life immediately.
If he didn't have a gun he would beat him to death until someone stopped him, you can't pretend to know how would every single person on this planet react if that happened to him.
