9/11 was crazy. I was in 11th grade, 17 years old, news was turned on after the first plane hit, watched the second one go in live.

I don't think people understand how terrifying it was, particularly being 17. We didn't know it was a terrorist attack at first. We thought it was a prelude to invasion, that we were just generally under attack. Everyone was freaking out, some of our parents had been in Vietnam and we basically thought we would inevitably be drafted, like 100% chance.

It might be chilling for some of you guys to watch the footage but to be almost of draft age and watch that shit go down live was crazy.

I've never been more proud of my country though, the way we came together in the aftermath. Things were pretty divisive back then thanks to the 2000 election, the recount drama and everything else.

I wish we could get that sort of unifying event again, but it wouldn't be a fucking attack. I don't think it's possible though, but I'd love that feeling of full acceptance from every American again, regardless of political lines. In many ways, it was a beautiful time.
