The entire series is about the power of narrative, the idea that a story can contain an archetypal truth that is beyond the actual facts of the story. The OA told a story, a story that allowed her to live through a horrible event and gave the students a method to survive their own horrible random event.

I don't remember. But essentially, the point is that Netflix used to have a monopoly on digital streaming, and this allowed them to purchase rights for cheap. That ended, and now there's a fuckload of competition from Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and the studios and networks own services that makes it prohibitively expensive for them to actually have a lot of good movies.

This is false, while Amazon does have a few better movies than netflix I think, they pad out their movie list with unwatchable garbage. Every genre there are 3-4 top tier movies, 8-10 decent movies and then 300-500 made for youtube 'films'.

Netflix has the opposite problem, there are maybe 1-2 really great movies per genre and 10-15 good movies but also 20-30 average movies and 20-30 shit movies.

I have a way harder time finding something worth watching that I haven't seen already on amazon but netflix still has a few decent films I'll probably end up watching.

I'm watching pic related right now, tho I've never seen discussion about it literally anywhere on the internet. Probably because it's a japanese live action adaptation of a pretty low key manga.

There's no way to describe some of the acting as anything other than exaggerated anime-isms, but the story content is a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of other japanese stories that filter their way through to the west. Stories about sexuality, age gaps in relationships, people in more unsavory adult industries, that sort of thing. All bookended by what is essentially a family friendly cooking show.

Let me tell you, a real cut above the umpteenth show about japanese teenagers giving each other fuck-me eyes.

Because digital streaming licensing agreements and release windows.

1) Hollywood studios hated netlfix when it was strictly a by mail service
2) The first sale doctrine in US copyright law means that when you purchase something, you can do whatever the fuck you want with it. That means if I go out and buy a bunch of movies on Amazon there is nothing legally stopping me from lending them out and charging people to rent them.

3) This doctrine does not apply to streams however, for that you require a license from the copyright holder.

Hollywood studios do not allow netflix to stream the movies you actually want to watch. The only reason netflix has any 'premium' movies in the first place is because a few years ago they agreed to delay availability of new releases by 2 weeks or more after the movie went on sale. This forces people to either go out and buy the movie or use a VOD service which gives the studio more money.

TLDR the reason you can't watch good movies on netflix is because the movie studios like eating bags of dicks.
