I've been to a couple places and mainland China. It's an interesting place with relatively friendly people, but it is gross. It's gross to anyone from the West. They spit constantly, it smells, its polluted in many places, and the sanitation in non-tourist/profession area's is a joke. China is basically the West circa 1870-1920. It's getting better but they still have a long way to go in most places.

When I went there I had to get shots for Polio and the Bubonic plague. China has millions of people living in close proximity to animals all with poor sanitation. SARS, Bird Flue, and other diseases can crop up under these kind of conditions, China and India are both petri dishes for possible pandemics
