the script in Birdman is pretentious ass fuckery and so is the direction. the long take format serves absolutely no purpose outside of allowing AGI to toot his own horn about how awesome of a director he is.

The Revenant is mostly well directed, but the fact that it cottons so much to revenge genre trappings after AGI spent his time on the interview circuit talking about how it's a transcendental, spiritual film makes it a joke. the highlight of it is easily Chivo's cinematography and the performances from Hardy and Gleeson.

AGI isn't a bad director - i like Biutiful and Babel - but the dude has gotten incredibly pretentious and showy recently, and i don't think winning two consecutive Oscars is going to help that shitty attitude any. i don't look forward to his future work.

Days of Future Past, First Class are good in my opinion.

The earlier films aren't bad, maybe a fun little time capsule of the aesthetics of that era. Some hella fucking epic moments in the earlier kinos tho, when Jean blows up or something.
