has there ever been better cinematography in a movie?

The sequence of Jupiter and its moons after HAL is turned off has got to be the most incredible example of vision and art and talent and beauty I've ever seen
>>
only film I consider to be magical
>>
>>79544132
just watch it more than once, read about it, it really is amazing

>The sequence of Jupiter and its moons after HAL is turned off

this scene scares the hell out of me.

imagine being totally alone on that mission in the depths of space like that and being dwarfed by those huge moons and jupiter.

After reading the book, the film becomes little more than a very well crafted container: It's pretty and neat to look at it, but open it up, and it's empty. There is none of Clarke's vision of how a being we'd call God would communicate with us across unfathomable time spans, or teach us, or lead us into higher consciousness. Stripped away by Kubrick is the sense that this being truly wants us to be in its image, and that the whole breadcrumb trail of monoliths was designed to do just that. And completely erased is the notion that David Bowman, as Star Child, is now one with the Universe, in some Zen-like way, and also much more like something we'd called a god.

Don't get me wrong, 2001 is still one of my favorite films, but to get the full meaning and understand the full weight of why 2001 has been called "the perfect science fiction story," you must read the book. Clarke marries science, mysticism, theory, and fantasy in ways like no other. Unfortunately, Kubrick stripped away the mysticism and theory and left us what is, in comparison to the book, only a glimmer at something bigger.

Kubrick touched the monolith, but Clarke went inside.

>good story

ok..........
>>
>>79544543
if you like sci-fi, yeah, but remember Kubrick picked a book and made his version, which is better imo

the best sci-fi book is Childhood's End though, read that

in the book he wasnt totally alone he had radio contact with people on earth the entire time and he spent months on that ship looking for the monolith after he killed HAL
>>
>>79544299
yeah and its incredibly beautiful shots fuck you 2001 is good in a really intuitive way if you didnt get it you probably spend too much time on your phone and you got turned into a robot i bet you got bored turning the scenes when they were trying to fix the radio and you pulled out your phone and scrolled through normie book fuck you

nah, I just think that if you were bored by 2001, which is a pretty entry level art film, then you must be pretty new to movies. that or you aren't watching right. probably both

holy moly was on the verge of making this thread. I need some good, LONG, snore kino, but PREFERABLY something I havent seen before

I'm currently debating:
Avatar extended cut
2001
Lawrence of Arabia

but I would like some suggestions too. I just watched Barry Lyndon and loved it

right now I know I want it to be live action. I want something Middle Eastern if possible, but I would really acivate my almonds if I could find something very kino, very long, vintage, Indian/Buddhist. Lots of jungle shots and temples.

It's similar to Linklater's Before Trilogy but with a darker tone, it satisfied all my cinematic sensibilities to be honest
