What do you dislike about it? The music selections on this show are perfect, and "The Great Beauty" had an excellent soundtrack too. That's all I've seen from Sorrentino but I'm planning to watch the rest shortly, I was very impressed.

It seems like he uses music as a very basic, earnest, unironic expression of emotion, which can feel kind of embarrassing or "corny" for some people. I've seen someone else call it "emotionally manipulative," but isn't filmmaking basically the art of emotional manipulation?

It has a lot of layers and hidden connections, but if you require spoon-feeding, just skip it.
>>
>>79498801
In all seriousness - It might be the best show I've ever seen. The whole show has a sense of humor, but there's no irony here, it's an earnest, heartfelt, and highly ambitious exploration of the relationship between man and God, and the evolving purpose of a "Church" as a middleman between the two.

It's the kind of show that should be "corny" on paper, and it's almost embarrassing to admit the emotional impact the "corniness" actually had on me. So for the most part, it's easier to meme. But I think everyone should at least give this series a chance and decide for themselves.

Sorrentino is the filmmaker that Terrence Malick has spent his whole career trying to be
>>
>>79499147
this really. you don't even have to be religious or catholic to appreciate it. /tv/ memes about kino but this show actually deserves the moniker.

>>
>>79499147

You're right in the quality and it being the best single season ever made.

However, I don't think the church or religion is the message at all. To me it was all about love and growth -- with religion as a framing point.

Either way, this show is genuinely beautiful.
>>
>>79498105
Dumb animeposter.
>>
>>79499017

Characters are great, they change through the show as they stumble and fail. Lenny goes from this autistic authoritarian wuth radical outdated as fuck ideas to someone more open to new ways of thinking. Voiello goes from this manipalive politician to someone completely human, devoid of any wishes of glory and power and even thinking about finding love outside the church. Also he's officially /ourguy/

The photography is out of this world, no one does composition like Sorrentino. He is a contemporary genius

The themes are so rich that comparing it not only with HoC which is either an epic meme or some kind of retarded Netflix shilling, but to Mad Men is an insult. For instance, Lennys ideas and his feelings are perfectly interwined (absence is presence for the Church which is exactly how he feels about his parents) and there are many more.

The humour falls flat sometimes but other than this is a 10/10 show up there with Sopranos and The Wire.

The Sopranos could definitely be called a 10/10, The Wire is at least an 8 or 9, but they're both so cynical that I have to put The Young Pope in a higher category.

I know it gets memed to oblivion, but Twin Peaks is the only show I can think of that has the same kind of transcendent quality as The Young Pope. I've never seen "The Decalogue" yet. And what else is there at this level of ambition & quality?

I think it's less flirting and more of a power play. The Pope brings up the small Catholic community in Greenland which the prime minister responds to by talking about the larger evangelical presence there.

He shoots her down (in kind of a dumb way imo, "we were there first"). Then he asks whats under the ice and again she's quick with an answer. Sticking to his guns, the pope says "could be god" but smiles cause its a joke.

I guess you could consider it flirting, the real question is if its the prime minister at the end of the episode dancing. I'm pretty sure it is since it says the Greenlanders are dancers and I think its implying she got some holy cock.

I honestly don't know the answer to this quesiton, /tv/. I too feel the urge to shit on stuff that is regarded as great if I didn't like it and I also will defend to death stuff that I do like. I will find something that I consider objectively bad in something and yet I'm never convinced when people shit on the stuff I love.

For example I believe that a lot of scenes from 2001 are unnecessary, like the video chat, or that Lawrence of Arabia is portrayed by a guy that projects faggy vibes so strong that I can't see him as a compelling leader, someone that people will follow to their death. And yet I love young pope and knight of cups and believe that people who don't like them just don't have the perspective to enjoy them. I don't think it has anything to do with smartz, just with having some prior exposure to some stuff, and I believe that it's their loss that they can't appreciate this stuff but someday they may.

And all would have been well and good but I also like to discuss the stuff that I love but I don't like to look at posts that shit baselessly on it over and over again, thinking that they are right, while I myself am like that over other things. It's an endless cycle of getting triggered and triggering others.

Like some people have said previously, the whole series can be enjoyed through the various other themes. Even if you hate religion I don't think it'd be hard to see the religious aspects as just framing for the other parts and still get something from the show
>>
>>79499746
What did you expect watching two episodes of one of the dullest franchise in the history of tv franchises. Seriously each episode following Pope Pius XIII and his cardinal pals as they fight assorted other members of the Church has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the seriesā€™ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and inaccurate use of curial politics, all to make faith faithless, to make belief seem nonexistent.

Perhaps the die was cast when Pope Francis vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody. Just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his policies which he will never finish before being stabbed to death by a refugee. The Young Pope might be anti-Benedict XVI (or not), but itā€™s certainly the anti-Catholic series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and faith. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the writing was good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the direction was terrible. As I watched, I noticed that every time Pius went for a walk, Sorrentino wrote instead that a miracle "happens".

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time a miracle occured. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several hundred times. I was incredulous. Sorrentino's mind is so governed by cliches and literal shit metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of The Young Pope by a Redditor. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are watching Sorrentino at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on Reddit." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch "Sorrentino" you are, in fact, trained to be a Redditor.
>>
>>79501045
>Are there lots of themes about people finding God and shit?

That's pretty much the theme.

If you were someone that became disillusioned with the soft direction the church has taken over the years you would be even more disappointed because you're drawn in with the new pope acting like he's gonna bring the church back to its roots.

Having Lenny survive the heart attack just to come back to politicking would defeat the purpose of the show, it was the anti-HoC, it started off politics and became religious slice of life. If they bring him back and try to keep the slice of life going forever, the show will become The Lenny Show with Special Guest (X) every episode.

honestly i'm confused by pope's behavior as well, I'm going to give him a benefit of the doubt until the second season to see if there was any meaningful reasoning behind that. The way things are he either had very little reasoning behind his initial plan or is swayed like a leaf by something that i feel wasn't conveyed very strongly. I like the characters that grow and change but I also like radical characters to have some serious reasoning for changing status quo (but the more I think about it the more it looks like that it was sort of teenage angst that came from longing for his parents).

Maybe you should give it a watch and see what you think. It might interest you to discover that the people in the highest positions of the Church aren't nearly as arrogant in their faith as you are in yours. The characters in this show are constantly challenging and questioning their beliefs.

I know it's just a dumb TV show and I'm blowing it out of proportion, but maybe it'll put a few thoughts into your head other than "I already know everything about the world"

Seriously, I've never seen a ghost before and have no reason to believe in their existence. But if you put me at a table with two (mostly) reasonable adults who are firmly convinced that they've met and interacted with ghosts, I would be very interested to hear what they have to say.
>>

>be very careful
>>
>>79501646
>he either had very little reasoning behind his initial plan
yes. he was a broken and lost man getting back at world because he never knew love, Spencer said it best
>>
>>79501693
why didn't he save Spencer?
>>
>>79501646
It's pretty obvious that his initial "plan" wasn't very well thought out. I think a lot of people come into the show expecting some epic HoC type character that can perfectly manipulate the people and politics surrounding them, and don't realize that's not what Lenny is. He's young, inexperienced, and lost. Too many people want Lenny to be a "badass" and therefore are ignorant to the flaws in his early dealings of the church
>>
>>79501748
I get the impression he doesn't exactly control these "episodes," there are just certain moments when he realizes he can do something about it. That stop at the gas station obviously wasn't planned ahead of time

Besides, Spencer was ready to go. I don't think he would've wanted to be resurrected.

Spencer died of old age. he lived a long life, left no unfinished business and passed away when his time came. it's not like he was a young person who got ill with some sickness, praying to extent his life would be selfish and wouldn't really even cross Lennys mind
>>
>>79501810
>Perhaps they should have opened with a hardline conservative pope fixing the church angle, you think of that?
What are you even trying to say? They basically did open with that exact idea. The only times he changed his mind were the times when he encountered an exception that he couldn't ignore or argue away, which tends to happen when you start putting ideas into practice.
>>
>>79501693
Well then I guess I will appreciate his journey as a very candid and naive one, but then again his keikaku with prime minister of italy seems to have worked out so i feel mixed messages.

>>79501748
Didn't Spencer want to die? I feel like listening to Lenny's story and dying afterwards was his salvation.

>>79501797

They didn't help themselves with trailers and Lenny's first encounter with Voiello, but I feel that it was a deliberate bait and switch tactic, to lure in someone with the promise of HoC and give them something much more if they were willing to take it.
>>
>>79501646
He has nearly the same plan he did at the beginning. The only change was what the marketing lady told him -- all stick no carrot. His objectives and means stayed the same and he was vindicated in the end. He was right to say that the Church lost all real sway by putting itself out there too much. He just learned that, ultimately people also need to feel the Church's love as well. The entire character of Lenny is that he is Christlike. His entire arc is fulfilling his Christlike destiny. Christ also clearly established there is a place for love and fury in the Church.
>>
>>79501810
why? again, it's not some power fantasy about fixing the church. it's not like the church would really be fixed because it was done in the show. and not like there is one objective way of fixing the church, many people would argue that it doesnt even need any fixing. shows asks questions, does not provide with answers because those would be just personal opinions.
show about Lenny making the church conservative would be on the same level of retardation as if some butthurt liberal made a show about Hillary winning the US election and making America great, ultimately pointless.
>>
>>79501670
I started both at the same time, they're actually a good mix. TYP makes you feel good in a spiritual way, Taboo makes you feel good in a baser way because it's a pulp conspiracy story with Bane and ghosts.

>>
>>79501988

Christianity in a nutshell: Pretty much everything you want to do is a sin. All sins are forgivable as long as you're capable of recognizing them as sins. "Harsh in principle, soft in practice" as Spencer says in the last episode. The Church is meant to recognize and condemn actions that are harmful or destructive, but not to condemn or exclude the people who commit those actions.
>>
>>79502756
I would say he very much was anti things, but he learned about pity and mercy. Otherwise, yes. He confirms his bias of homosexuals by looking at how the Church has basically become one of those "adult friendship" clubs for gays, but realizes he wasn't fair when the man he basically decided was his best friend the moment they met is gay. He fully understood what Voiello, Dussolier, and Gutierrez were trying to tell him about sexuality being independent of virtue.

the problem is that Gutierrez's character is misleading. irl the gays and pedophiles in the ranks of the clergy are mostly allied in a loose coalition known as the "Velvet Mafia". the entire idea of a gay priest who hates predators because he was molested as a kid is a little farfetched. most people with a backstory like that end up much more like Kurtwell. Gutierrez's character will give normies the false idea that there are noble gay pedo victims fighting on the side of justice within the clergy, when in reality such individuals are all aligned with the predators

I'm about to watch the season finale.

I have to say, this show is INCREDIBLY boring. I'm not Catholic, and I'm American. I don't know if this show is more appealing to a Catholic, specifically Italian Catholics. But still, I came in expecting House of Cards and instead I got Jude Law as 'Man with the largest ego on Earth in white garb'.

There is barely any intrigue or conflict in the show. It's just Jude Law being a foil to the real life liberal Pope. I don't know really care for that. I mean, I don't care if the show is serving as some social commentary/reactionary response to what is going on. Lenny Belgardo is fucking boring, and him being bitter about being orphaned being the driving force behind the show, is just not compelling.

Someone who likes The Young Pope: can you explain why you like it? I just don't understand what is there to like. The music is cheesy. Some of the characters are stock archetypes. Some subplots don't get resolved. There was a dramatic tone shift after ep 6. Like, someone just decided 'Okay, let's try to make it interesting now!'

minor things about preferences are subjective but for the most part its all objective.

>>
>>79516615
The problem is, the premise of the show is fictional. The Cardinal College will never vote for some 40-year-old unknown American cardinal. Especially one with emotional baggage. I'm sure in real life, they've would've known, "hey this guy probably has deep seeded emotional issues because of his muh parents. Let's not vote for him."

So Jude Law's character becoming pope is contrived. Everything about him is just unrealistic. And it was off screen and barely explained.

So episodes 1-10 is just seeing him, being a narcissistic dick, after off-screen climbed the steps of power. There was no journey like with House of Cards. That's why I'm bringing it up. There is no character development.

Watching 10 eps of someone being an unchecked megalomaniac with no interesting backdrop, no deep philosophical overtones to ponder about, no conflict to keep you coming back for more, no interesting characters, cheesy music/production.

What am I missing? The burden is on YOU to argue that it is a good show despite it having a 'failure' on every checkbox for what most people would consider good.
>>
>>79516763
right yes. HoC of course. sure. Whatever you want.

Here's your 1 allotted (you) back to your hovel now Amir
>>
>>79516763
It's implied that was God who chose him.
>no character development
You must be retarded.
>>
>>79516786
I can't even understand you. If you can't articulate coherent thoughts in the English language, then don't bother shitposting in the future, please. You're wasting my time. I thought I could argue with someone intelligent, see a different perspective, and maybe have a shift in my own perspective -- maybe even have a meeting of the mind.

For that process to occur, we need an intelligent dialogue between more than 1 person. Shitposting does not accomplish anything other than filling the void with nothingness.
>>
>>79516866
but you proved that you didn't actually watch the show when you claimed that there is no character development when pretty much most of the characters go through character development
>>
>>79516866
yes. Sure I agree with whatever you typed. HoC, the part about the lima beans, the shitposting, all of it.

Good job Amir. You better hurry. The internet cafe you're at closes soon and Your bus to the lower west side is coming shortly
>>
>>79516866
You can write long sentences clearly misrepresenting what you saw in the show but in the end it's just you describing how you couldn't appreciate and understand a tale of emotional loss and gain. You ask to explain the show to yourself when you're on a thread with peoples talking about the show, why don't you read what they write about it instead of trolling. Otherwise i'm sorry if you're that stupid
>>
>>79516897
>giving amir more than his (1) allotted (you)

Now fucking pajeet will starve tomorrow. Good job anon. You gonna be giving him (you)'s when he's 40? You got (you)'s saved up to leave him as an inheritance? You don't think Amir will want two (you)'s tomorrow as well?
>>
>>79516897
I have watched 1-9. The African nun seems to have been struck by the hand of God after Pius prayed. Up until now, it was a secular show. Now there is ambiguity about whether there is a supernatural element to it.

Despite this development, I still think there is no development. Pius is still some crypto atheist with a chip on his shoulder, who is pretending to believe unironically. Cardinal Voiello is trying to oust him again, so we're back to episode 3 or whatever. Sister Mary is still a mystery. The ginger friend guy, who was finally getting screen time, he gets killed off for some--presumably character development--but it remains to be seen if it will change Lenny/Pius.

I dunno, episodes 1-6 are very very dry. 7-9 is 'maybe we're going somewhere now'.
>>
>>79517008
So you see a development and still insist there is no development just to stand a point ? and you want people not to think you're stupid ? The fact that the ambiguity is disturbing you this much show that you must have everything explain to you and cannont grasp the visual cues while watching a show.
>>
>>79517008
cont.

My opinion is scathing because I think real talented writers could've made the show interesting from the start, from 1-6. not try to shoehorn something at the end of a season. It's like a tale of two shows. 1-6 and 7-10 are completely different. It's like writer(s) are bipolar. I care not to speculate if this was the intention. It's shitty writing nonetheless. The music is extremely fucking cheesy. Ugh. I just. There are so many things I have to look over, to judge the meat and potatoes, and there's not much to go on. It just is. That's my problem. If I could articulate my biggest gripe: there is no real carrot on the stick in this show. The writers should've made something. The viewership is shit for a reason, and it's not because we're all plebs. Give me something to chew on. Give me something mull over for next week/episode and I'll be hooked. Is that too much to ask for?
>>
>>79517109
>>79517008
(you)ing your own shitpost

amir you know this to be against the rules. I'll have to report you to the authorities
>>
>drinks liquor
>has sex

No he fucking doesn't you autistic sack of shit.
>>
>>79517078
It's too little too late. Asking people to sit through 6 hours of boring shit to see the first possible sign of a development is unfair to ask for. If you turn in an assignment late, it is no longer accepted for credit, right? That's how I feel about 7-10.

>that you must have everything explain to you and cannont grasp the visual cues while watching a show.

It's quite the opposite, friend-o. They beat you over the head with the fact that Lenny is a fedora tipper. He literally tells his confidant "I don't believe in God" in the first episode right? Why not, I don't know, try to make that more subtle? Aside, from Sister Mary, I can't think of anything that is subtle in this show. Everything is in your face. I know many Catholics are stupid, but god damn, it's spoon feeding galore.

I just can't take the current pope seriously after that. Even cardinals were publicly embarrassed. Hopefully the next pope won't be so pathetic and weak.
>>
>>79517251
man the shift in tonality was already done directly after the intro of the serie you fucking moron ! The development is done in every episodes, you must be brain dead to not see it. Why do you insist in writing long diatribe when it just expose your ignorance
>>
Protestants are so jealous of Catholics that they fund propaganda shows to make them appear evil.
This show is for atheists and liberals who dream of fighting the big evil organization that is the church.

Such quality. Nice song. Omg Bling Bling. Omg every other episode, Pius: "I know I'm handsome". Omg, ego so huge. Such Wow. I think this character might be narcissistic... right?

why Do you all insist on feeding on amir. You realize he will become dependent upon your (you)'s and when he has to go back to the wild to hunt for them he will starve

Either a Protestant or an atheist, retarded either way.

Why do you insist on repeating a counterfactual statement on the heel of an ad hominem attack against me?

The weakest form of argument is '2deep4u, u 2 stupid'.

>>79517408
I'm just laughing at (presuming it's you) saying that the show has visual cues and subtext that I'm missing. You can not write something more counterfactual to reality.

Alright, I think I'm being trolled by Euros; time to take my leave. /pol/ does tell me to watch out for foreign flags. It's unfortunate that it's harder to filter you out on these boards.

I can't prove to you that Young Pope is an amazing show, and I don't need to.

There's just something so sincere and uniquely bizzare about it all, and there isn't any shoehorned HBO plebshit like you'd see in Game of Thrones or Westworld. I thought I was going to write a much longer post but I really can't find the words right now, so I'll just post this scene.

The dichotomy of sacred and profane, a classic since D'Annunzio: Pius going through (or better, restoring) these millenarial rites while we hear a popular, chessy, modern song emblem of superficiality.
As for the rest of your posts: the show is really slow burning at first, it takes it time to cement the position and extreme undisputable power of Pius XIII in his controversial decisions as new pope, then we see an acceleration in episodes 7-10, as you pointed out, but the point never was to portray a "social climb" akin to Frank Underwood, rather it depicted a complete reversal of tendency in the realistic setting and mentality of the contemporary Catholic Church, which has become steadily more and more liberal (see Pope Francis): the show, something I completely did not expect prior to watching it, presents a Young Popeā„¢ who however completely reverses this all, restoring forgotten rituals, as I said at the beginning, and adopting a reactionary mentality, which I think is really coherent with the reactionary movements which have been rising everywhere: Trump, Brexit, LePen.
>>
>>79517546
The Young Pope doesn't throw you bread crumbs and force cliffhangers to keep you with it-- you're either in or you're out, no part time believers

Here's hoping the second season won't take two years to make like the first one did.

Just because there's a few pop songs doesn't mean that "they try harder to appeal dumb millnials with current music", may I remind you there's also Recondite, AWVFTS, Venditti etc in its soundtrack. Also, if there's anything that can't be said about Sorrentino, is that the soundtracks of ist films aren't always spot on. Also, you're a colossal faget, kill you're selve
