If any of the cast should've won it would've been these two. Andy was doing something that was cutting-edge and remains fairly unmatched. And Mckellen was The Grey Pilgrim was perfect.

I completely agree about Andy Serkis in terms of offering originality and talent.
I just think Sean Astin was amazing in these films.
