Pff. Haneke literally alluded to OP's interpretation in interviews and press conferences. But of course it's always veiled behind muh "personal interpretation, it's not only about fascism, bla bla, totalitarianism is bad, bla bla".

Yes, the basic gist of the movie is: Germany was sick and Germans were sick and it was this "sickness" that eventually led to National Socialism and Hitlerism.

You see, the problem with the film is NOT that it deliberately targets fascism by trying to equate the inexplicable and absolute evil of the characters in the film with the politicians of 30s and 40s Germany. It doesn't do this explicitly. Rather it just tries to be a banal critique of totalitarianism, absolute commitment to ideals leads to evil. Wow, so insightful.
The problem is that the film is implicitly biased against fascism and forces the viewer to reach the logical conclusion stated above. It's a pernicious form of manipulation, and no matter how much Haneke denies this was his intention, he was perfectly well aware of it and deliberately crafted to film to lead the viewer down this path.

Fuck you, Haneke. You deserve to be in an oven with all the Juden.
