What was his quip, OP? I can't remember.
>>
>>79475697
why were quips ok in the 80s, but they cause you guys to go into autistic fits of rage now?
>>
>>79475697
Not all Marvels are created equal, but they're all better than DC.
>>

Why was Fox's Quicksilver so much better than this guy who didn't do much of anything?
>>
Why didn't he carry them away? Was he suicidal?
>>
>>79476067
>I'll catch you guys in the big shawarma house in the sky
>>
>>79476192
Well for starters the 80s had competant action scenes and violence to go with the quips. I can't believe you don't know this.
>>
>>79476192
Because they went all in on super-serious Snyder films, got embarrassed, and now rampantly troll Marvel films and their more light-hearted approach out of a combination of sunk-cost fallacy and autistic rage
>>
>>79476352
Whedon's humor was at its worst in AoU. In X-men, Quicksilver is the comedic relief, but it's played well by Evan Peters in doses. Nobody else is cracking jokes every second like it does with Whedon.

He says it 10 times throughout the movie and IIRC in the ads. C'mon keep up.
>>
>>79476192
The problem isn't quips. The problem is misplaced flippancy. 80s action movies took action scenes seriously while Marvel Studios won't allow the audience to feel any amount of tension. The best example of this is Civil War. If you remove the airport scene it's mostly quipless and is serious. But with that scene it is disjointed.
>>
>>79476528
This too. When there's one character who cracks wise it stands out and is a definite character trait. When everyone cracks jokes it's annoying.
>>
>>79476067

>killing him off in such a retarded ass fashion on top of that

Fuck Joss "King of the Cucks" Whedon.
>>
>>79475697
How would somebody moving at that speed even die from being shot? Wouldn't that be like someone slowly pushing a bullet against you until 1 minute later it goes through your skin? Couldn't he literally just slap them aside?

Does that mean he deliberately just stood there and let the bullets slowly drive into his body? Seems like if you wanted to kill a speedster then you'd use something as fast as them, like standing in water with it becoming electrified.

Well if you actually want to be technical, everything he touches when moving at that speed should cause him serious harm. He couldn't theoretically just touch people and have them fly across the room in normal speed without himself receiving the same equal and opposite force from those touches.

>Because of his Spider-Sense, Peter doesn't really have to focus in battle. As long as his Spider-Sense tells him when an attack is incoming, he's got the reflexes and speed to avoid it. However, when his Spider-Sense is disabled by enemies like Carnage or Venom, he has to focus a lot more, so he cuts the quips down a lot.

>As for why he does it, Peter was young and still nerdy when he became Spider-Man. He used humor to distract himself from the nervousness and fear he felt when he started fighting adult supervillains, and as he got older and more confident, he kept doing it out of habit. Also, he's just kind of a smartass in general.

>EDIT: Also, part of winning a fight is psychological. If Spidey mocks and taunts his enemies, they're more likely to get angry and make a mistake.

tbqh the weirdest thing about Quicksilver's death is how everyone seems to immediately forget it happened.

In Civil War, which takes place not too long after Ultron, Wanda never once mentions or alludes to her brother's death, or whatever emotional impact it had on her.

There's probably legal limitations, didn't Disney have to license their own property from Fox? I heard that's how they worked it out because Fox wanted Quicksilver more and Disney wanted Scarlet Witch more. I bet Disney licensed Scarlet Witch for several movies but Quicksilver only for one, so now they can't even mention him.
>>
>>79478691

>>
>>79476067
>In all seriousness, I'll get less wind resistance from these gaping holes in my body

>>79478728
I thought they were built in to X-Men by right of being mutants and they own Marvel "mutants" lock stock and barrel

They exist in Avengers license because they are Avengers, though the word mutant may not pass anyone's lips.

So they are already pre-licensed in both sub-franchises for unlimited use, afaik
>>
>>79478796
Correct. Marvel gets away with using Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch without having to license them from Fox because the characters, despite being mutants, have featured more prominently in Avengers comics than in X-Men comics.
>>
Age of Ultron and Iron Man 2 are the only bad MCU movies

Try and prove me wrong
>>
>>79478962
I wouldn't say they're bad but I had no desire to see them a second time. This puts them in the same boat as everything except Guardians, which is more sci-fi/humor than superhero in feel.
>>
>>79478962
Age of Ultron has some big flaws but is actually pretty good and underrated/under-appreciated imo. It's impressive in terms of how ambitious it is and how much it manages to do right, despite being cluttered and bloated.

Thor: The Dark World is the only truly "bad" MCU movie, while others like Iron Man 2 are varying degrees of mediocre.
>>
>>79478717
They're tv shows. Inhumans is on ABC, Runaways is on Hulu, and Punisher is on Netflix.
>>
>>79479168

Also boo on sort of recycling the Superman Returns ending of lifting a huge land mass.
>>
>>79479168
Iron Man 2 is a cluttered mess

Thor: The Dark World was at least fun to watch in some regard, largely because a lot of it took place on Asgard and other non-earth locations

It's implied Wanda is trying to forge ahead with her new life, so she's trying to leave the past behind. Wanda is a stoic person,it would be out of character for her to spew about Pietro (unless written by Bendis).

"It's my fault."
"It's not."
"They are being very specific."
"Wanda, your brother died and that's sad...I don't want to upset you by bringing up something that is painful, the death of your brother, Pietro Maximoff, but...but muh Bucky I felt like I was a kid again..."

"This is not Paprika."
"In my defence I have never eaten...I am sorry your brother died, Wanda."

"You gonna mope about feeling sad about your brother Pietro dying, or get off your ass?"

"Wanda, I was trying to protect you from dying like your brother Pietro who died."

To be fair she did wince at the Sokovia footage in Civil War, to which Steve said to shut it off.

But yes his dead has been pretty lackluster represented. Even by her.

If Quicksilver dying has no meaning and purpose by the end of Infinity War (when they'll literally have the power to revive him) I will be pissed...mildly.

Quips take place during an action

Quips are interchangeable between characters
One Liners are specifically to show characterization

Quips are forgettable time fillers
One Liners are memorable

Many more such examples but I think you got the hang of it

The rights is actually really, really complicated. Like, digging through the copyright archives at marvel and fox and all this weird shit. Fox does not have the rights to Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver.
Fox does have the rights to Magnetos family and marvel comics mutants.

The rights to many characters were handled in a much looser way prior to 2005 when Marvel tried to get them back. The rights typically speciffy a characters trademark. Like If you're going to use cyclops he has laser eyes. Any time a character had different powers, like Calisto in X-men 3 have speed powers, Marvel approved this. It's speculated that marvel approved use of quicksilver in x-men 3, who was later removed and inserted into wolverine, also removed and cut down to a cameo. Marvel gave permission to use him....but seemed to regret it and argue against it. The rights DID fall under avengers as per their deal with merril-lynch. That if some other studio got the rights to avengers, it included the twins.

The two studios do still talk, so they clearly worked something out. The rumor is, Fox has not gotten permission to use scarlet witch.

Everyone suspected was that someone big was going to die in AoU. Everyone assumed that Hawkeye would be the one to die. So Joss thought it would be brilliant to play off this. The whole movie we're made to believe Hawkeye is who is going to die.

>He gets a ton of screentime and focus.
>He gets backstory on his family
>We're made to relate to him because of how human he is.
>He feels outclassed by all Avengers
>He has several moments of nearly dying.

"You didn't see that coming" is established between Hawkeye and Quicksilver. The audience is led to believe the final payoff was Hawkeye shooting the glass below QS, which is Hawkeye getting back at him. The real payoff is instead of Hawkeye biting the dust to save a kid, QS sacrificed himself to save Hawkeye, saying the line again as a jab at the audience.

This doesn't work, but its not the quip that ruins it (QS honestly would say that as smart ass as he is), its more or less the timing and mood that's been set that ruins it.

Half of the final fight, quips and jokes are being thrown about. It lessens the stakes of the battles. If you're about to die on a robot-made meteor, and you want the audience to feel the urgency you probably shouldn't have your characters making fun of the situation or cracking jokes at the enemy. It makes it feel as if your protagonists feel like their enemy is not a threat and they aren't in danger of anything. You cant argue that all these characters use humor as a crutch in serious situations, that doesn't work when you have established how these characters act in other movies and they dont act the same way. It was complete BS that everyone had Stark-like humor. Even Cap, who literally never quips during a war, he takes war very seriously.

But we should be glad Marvel realized he nearly fucked up and got rid of him. Joss would have ruined Avengers 3-4

We're not talking about her not caring in the actual movie but afterwards.

That is her lifelong brother she spent her life with. They were experimented on together. Him dying should be a bigger deal and should be something she still mourns over in Civil War, but she seems more concerned with her own actions. She doesn't even mention him. Even DC movies understand that when someone dies its not just forgotten about, not saying QS is as big a deal as Superman was but there's a reason not many people even talk about the Marvel Quicksilver anymore.

Miles better. For one, the main quips of that movie come from the intro battle scene and the airport scene.

It works in the initial action scene because it was just a routine job by Avengers until the fuck up at the end when everyone got serious as they should have. It echos what the general would then do, showing them causing damage with little to no reaction until they realize they should have took it more seriously. Its also worth noting only Falcon is really quippy in this scene as well.

Not only is the fight not that serious, i believe it was intentional to lighten the mood before bringing it back down when Rhody is injured. The quips in the airport scene work because they acknowledge that the fight is merely a distraction (Bucky and Cap are trying to get away and Team Iron Man just want to catch them) and that they do not want to kill each other. On top of that characters are consistent in their motivations and depending on those motivations, they either take it serious or they don't.

>Spider-Man is just happy to be there. He's naturally quippy.
>Hawkeye and Antman are just doing a favor, they are naturally quippy.
>Winter Soldier is weirded out by Spider-Man, thats a pretty natural reaction.
>Falcon is quippy, as established.
>Cap makes one sly remark when talking to Spider-Man but thats about it. He's serious.
>Widow makes one quip to Hawkeye, consistent with their relationship.
>Vision says nothing.
>Black Panther is serious the entire time and wants to kill Bucky. (The i dont care bit wasn't a quip, Hawkeye was just being a smart ass.)
>Wanda is serious because of her anger towards Stark.
>War Machine you could make a case for, as he seems not to take it serious till near the end.

But then after that, the rest of the movie is serious. Stark is still Stark but the final battle, the one we should really care about, is deathly serious. Thats how it should be.

The quips keep being placed in the middle of big dramatic scenes or action scenes, so they spoil the tension or emotions that the scene was supposed to build.

Remember in Guardians of the Galaxy, how the whole film is building up to Quill and this band of misfits joining together to become heroes? How that's the whole point of the movie? Then, when it finally happens, they all stand up, these ragtag anti-heroes, selflessly agreeing to save the universe....

....and then Rocket Raccoon spoils the moment with "Well now I'm standing. Happy? We're all standing now. Bunch of jackasses, standing in a circle."

That's why people fucking hate quips.

>blocks the rounds from a futuristic jet with his body
What the fuck?
A. It looks like they went through him - how did putting his body in the way help?

B. Why would you not just move Hawkeye and the kid?

What the fuck is this bullshit

I can't see him in anything else other than his rapist hillbilly character after watching Nocturnal Animals.

Maybe it's because he's always been so bland in all of his movies that his performance in Nocturnal Animals surprised the fuck out of me.

What would have made age of ultron better? Besides having a different director?
