Because he's wrong.

Maybe it's because the show is dated but he really is wrong. You think Denmark and Sweden are better than the US???

Income tax in Denmark is xtremely high.Sweden is turning into Aleppo. Germany into Iraq, France into Mali. UK is literally Orwell's 1984.

Globalism is shitting up the place something fierce. Foreign investors just buy real estate in big metro areas around the world and sit on it to drive up prices to flip for 300% above actual worth.

Retirement/pension won't be an option for people who are in their 20 and early 30s now. This is just the fucking tip of the iceberg.

Only stupid, sheltered, ignorant liberals who've never been anywhere or actually looked think the world is becoming a better place and that current year is "the best it's ever been".

It's based on misleading stats and straight-up lies.

>22nd in science

How is he measuring this? The US leads the world in peer-reviewed science publishing and nobel prizes.

>178th in infant mortality

That's a good thing, if you're #1 it means you have the highest level of infant mortality.

>we lead the world in only 3 categories

Not even remotely true.

>defense spending, where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined. 25 of whom are allies.

Apparently, he thinks Russia, China, and Iran are US allies. And it's more than the next 10 combined, not the next 26. Either the Newsroom is set in a fictional universe where the US is allied to 2 of those 3 countries, or he's full of shit.

"My beloved 1950s"? What on earth are you talking about? The 1950s were awful. We fought a bloody war in Korea, taxes were through the roof, China had fallen to commies, the blacks were on the verge of rioting, everyone thought nuclear armageddon was right around the corner....

Also, that "90%" figure is insanely misleading, because that was the tax rate for the top income bracket.

I'm not that guy, but he's touching on the fact your post perfectly reflects a dystopian vision of the world that people that actually go outside realize isn't true. Maybe you became an adult in the 2010s, but compared to 20 years ago you'd be saying the world was apocalyptic with genocides in Europe and Africa, famine in Asia, race riots, federal raids, and worse crime in America, and bombings across England.
>>
>>79412267
It's not meant to be a perfect match to the real world. There are idiots that think that he was actually quoting everything as a perfect fact, but the only bad point of the speech is the leading the world in 3 categories, which doesn't make sense in the ficitonal universe of the show. The rest could perfectly match the show, and is close to some of the issues that do exist in the U.S. It still is a meaningful spirit to have with regards to wanting the U.S. to be better than it is and accepting its major shortcomings.
>>
>>79412580

>>
>>79412581
>but the only bad point of the speech is the leading the world in 3 categories, which doesn't make sense in the ficitonal universe of the show. The rest could perfectly match the show

Not really. If the US was really "22nd in science", that means that there was some massive economic decline in the country. How else do you go from #1 in science publishing, nobel prizes, and the number of top research universities all the way down to #22? And it was 178th-worst in infant mortality (as he was seemingly implying) then it would literally be a Syria-tier warzone.

>It still is a meaningful spirit to have with regards to wanting the U.S. to be better than it is and accepting its major shortcomings.

Yeah, the intentions are fine, but why lie? He could make the same point while telling the truth.

Not him, but assuming that anon is European, then he has every reason to be concerned about muslim refugees. In germany, for example, 3/4 of the refugees who arrived in 2015 are men under the age of 35 and 80% of them have no formal qualifications whatsoever. Most, of course, don't speak German either. That's a serious problem.

https://www.rt.com/news/320044-asylum-seekers-germany-education/

https://www.rt.com/news/343753-germany-refugees-males-statistics/

I know rt isn't the best source, but they're directly citing a report by Germany's own Federal Employment Agency.

Also, 26% of all welfare recipients in the country are immigrants, despite the fact that they make up just 2.5% of the national population.

http://www.welt.de/wirtschaft/article157422408/Jeder-vierte-Hartz-IV-Empfaenger-ist-Migrant.html

Whether you think Muslims are evil invaders or helpless refugees, either way, they're putting a massive strain on the welfare state of Germany. And it's hard to see how that's going to be corrected any time soon, given how difficult the assimilation process has traditionally been for muslim immigrants to Germany (just look at the Turks).

I did the study on this, what happens is that the "intelligence" of each country is calculated by a internationally accepted standardized test. In the US, the test gets given to each state, and each state randomly gives out the test to districts. When you look at the scores of the tests for NJ, NY, MA, CT, the scores are really high, usually the highest in the world. When you look at the scores of states like Hawaii, Alaska and Utah, the scores are ass. Idk if I explained well I haven't had much sleep.

America has gone from the superpower in every category in the world, whether it's technological, agricultural, industrial, military, everything, into a country that is completely complacent and backwards. What's even scarier is that all of this is being done intentionally and because the media isn't doing their job, the American people are being deceived. Look up Obama's and Hillary's mentor Saul Alinsky. Follow the paper trail of George Soros. Look at how America is negating all moral values slowly but surely. Even if you don't believe in God, the ten commandments are a stronghold in keeping a country stable. You know why Rome collapsed? Morals were negated in every category of life. Research the facts and see for yourself, we Americans need to wakeup, there is something very wrong going on right under our noses.

America is also #1 in GDP, the most used statistic for measuring economic prosperity. and that whole horse shit about waging war on poor people now instead of poverty is a complete invention. The welfare state has only increased with the democrats and things like affirmative action and employment equity are irrefutably unfairly advantaging the poor. Its just quick bullshit dialogue for people who want to think they are smart without contemplating anything that is actually coming out of his mouth.

They could've gone another route about the history of american imperialism or their reputation in the international community or our """""""democracy"""""""" promotion or some shit that could've actually held some merit. Not quite sure why the decided to tell lies instead
>>
>>79412952
>so how will that leave the economy?

Nobody knows for sure. IMO it's a disaster waiting to happen. You have so many unskilled young men, who don't speak German, will struggle to find work, and who generally have no respect for western culture or values (if the polls can be trusted). The ones who are married are having lots of children, too, so the ghettos will expand dramatically and you'll have even more people who struggle to find their place in the economy and in society.

>is there a work for welfare plan?

Germany is planning a 5-year unemployment benefits plan for refugees.

All of the numbers he rattles off are accurate within a position or two for 2010 according to the CIA Factbook.

>>
>>79413005
That's certainly part of it.
>>
>>79412952
One of the real problems though is that the Syrian Civil War is being used as a front for massive immigration from countries not currently at war. 22% of the migrants that were tallied in Calais were from Eritrea, a country that is simply poor. Well when is Eritrea going to no longer be an impoverished nation, allowing for these people to return? The answer is of course "never" and that same story is true for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of current migrants to the EU who come from North Africa rather than Syria. The VAST majority of migrants coming by boat over the Mediterranean are North African, not Syrian. They are Algerian, Libyan, Moroccan, Egyptian, Eritrean and Somalian predominantly, and none of those countries are going to have favorable political situations for the foreseeable future, and with the exception of Libya NONE of them are due to Western intervention or warfare.

Are we supposed to just take all of them? Or are we just going to continue to pretend that "we created their problems so we need to take them in"?

They have already surpassed them economically, but China's wage gap is pretty awful and the vast majority are 70hour/week miserable drones stuffed chock full into smoggy urban wastelands. I don't think its logical to claim China is a more desirable country to live in unless youre a millionaire

The US publishes more than three times as many peer-reviewed papers than the country with the second-most, Japan. Even if literally half of them are written by foreigners, the US would still lead the world in that category.

>>79413213
Anything I wrote earlier could be proved with about 5 seconds on google. But figuring out the exact number of peer-reviewed science papers written by people on H1B visas isn't so easy to find, so if you're going to make this claim it would be nice if you could provide proof.

The US GDP is $18 trillion, the Chinese GDP is $11 trillion. By what metric have the Chinese surpassed the Americans economically? Is this one of those "alternative facts" the American president likes to use?

yeah, that's tough. it will probably be frowned upon, but is there any talk as to deporting immigrants to countries where they might integrate better? might have to take a hit on trade deals or something, but it's better than changing the entire demographic of a country, i'd say.

And it likely never will, even if Italy is the cause of their problems, and I think you probably make very legitimate arguments in favor of that case, that doesn't mean we have to "punish" Italy for it by forcing them to take in migrants that a country like Italy especially cannot afford at the moment.

They tried sending several thousand refugees to Poland. You know what happened? The refugees all ran right back to Germany, because the welfare benefits are better there.

But as for countries where they might integrate better....that could only be a country in the middle east. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar are refusing to take them. As far as I know, they have all taken a combined grand total of.....0 refugees.

>btw, i'm assuming both of you are Germans or have interests or family there?

No, just an American who studies politics.
>>
>>79413322
I'm American, I have German blood in my veins but my interest is mostly due to an interest in geopolitics.

The best thing we can do for migrants is to construct working migrant camps close to the Syrian border. It costs Western nations between $45,000-$75,000 per year per refugee to bring them into their borders and provide them with citizenship. It costs roughly $2,500 per refugee per year to house them in a refugee camp, so even if we construct long-term refugee camps with all the bells and whistles it will cost far less than bringing them into Western nations on a more or less permanent basis.
>>

Purchasing power parity is worthless for comparing national economies, because it's based on a basket of product prices in each country and not on exchange rates (which is how real-world economic deals between countries work). To compare nations, you have to use nominal.

>>
>>79413516
right. But the speech implied that the USA is "waging a war on the poor." Poor people's lack of upward mobility often as a result of their own poor money managing skills is not the powers that be 'waging a war.' That claim is a pure fabrication
>>
In depth, autismal analysis why this is pure shit from a writing standpoint:

>Jennifer Johnson: Can you say why America is the greatest country in the world?

>Sharon: Diversity and opportunity.

>Moderator: Lewis?

>Lewis: Freedom and freedom... so let's keep it that way.

>*crowd claps*

what kind of reaction is this? would any crowd -- outside of a republican convention -- actually clap for a line like this? actually i'm not sure RNC members are this stupid either.

>Moderator: Will?

(note that the video above actually truncated this original convo)

>Will McAvoy: Well, Lewis and Sharon said it. Diversity and opportunity and freedom and freedom.

>Moderator: I'm not letting you go back to the airport without answering the question.

>Will McAvoy: Well, our Constitution is a masterpiece. James Madison was a genius. The Declaration of Independence is, for me, the single greatest piece of American writing...

>[Professor keeps staring]

>Will McAvoy: You don't look satisfied.

>Moderator: One's a set of laws and the other's a declaration of war. I want a human moment from you... what about the people? Why is America...

why does this matter? "One's a set of laws and the other's a declaration of war." what does that have to do with anything? that's a direct answer to the question. that's pretty human. those are human achievements.

>Will McAvoy: It's not the greatest country in the world, professor. That's my answer.

false shock from the crowd, ESPECIALLY if it's moderate or liberal leaning. audible gasps. ridiculous.
>>
>>79413611
>Moderator: You're saying...

why is the moderator shook? he's a moderator and it's a common sentiment.

>Will McAvoy: Yes.

>Moderator: Let's talk about...

shut it down, the goyim know! this reaction makes no sense.

>Will McAvoy: Fine.

[Turns to Sharon]

>Will McAvoy: Sharon, the NEA is a loser. Yeah, it accounts for a penny out of our paycheck, but he

>[gestures to Lewis]

>Will McAvoy: gets to hit you with it anytime he wants. It doesn't cost money, it costs votes. It costs airtime and column inches. You know why people don't like liberals? Cause they lose. If liberals are so fucking smart, how come they lose so god damn always?

now we're kicking up the stupidity. the first three sentences of this rant are entirely concocted to make the speaker "look knowledgable" while everyone in the room gapes their mouths and stares. it's political psychobabble. liberals lose? not around when this was made, they didn't.

Sharon: Hey!

>Will McAvoy: [Turns to Louis] And with a straight face, you're gonna tell students that America is so star-spangled awesome that we're the only ones in the world who have freedom? Canada has freedom. Japan has freedom. The UK. France. Italy. Germany. Spain. Australia... Belgium! has freedom... 207 sovereign states in the world, like 180 of 'em have freedom.

and all those "free" countries dont have the right to free speech, only "free" speech.

>Moderator: Alright...

>Will McAvoy: [Looks at Jenny] And, yeah, you... sorority girl.

this is so bad. this insult is thrown in there for the retards at home to clap their hands at, but this girl has done nothing at all to him. just makes him look like a loon shaking his fist at a cloud. this ire is totally unearned.

>We lead the world in only three categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real and defense spending - where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of whom are allies.

aha that's in the script.

>Will McAvoy: ... It sure used to be. We stood up for what was right. We fought for moral reasons. blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah blahblahblahblahblahblahblah

Overall education. Yes, our colleges are the best in the world. But our K-12 children are borderline retarded compared to other countries.

BTW, as of last year we're 24th in literacy.

As in, there are 23 other countries who have a higher percentage of people WHO CAN FUCKING READ.

>That's a good thing, if you're #1 it means you have the highest level of infant mortality.

All infant mortality statistics have the #1 slot meaning "lowest amount of baby death per 1000 births". But I guess expecting you to read a chart is too much.

>we lead the world in only 3 categories

Major categories, yeah. Facts hurt tho huh?

Our colleges are going downhill too since they've started having to do high school's jobs and the student loan bubble growing ever bigger.

Gotta stop letting in the retards. Although a lot of EU countries are doing that too now, so I guess we can all start plummeting together.

We could probably cut it a ton with no loss of effectiveness though. Monopolistic defense companies like Raytheon and Lockheed get ridiculous contracts thanks to government corruption.

Too much and for too long, we seemed to have surrendered personal excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our Gross National Product, now, is over $800 billion dollars a year, but that Gross National Product - if we judge the United States of America by that - that Gross National Product counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage.

It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for the people who break them. It counts the destruction of the redwood and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl.

It counts napalm and counts nuclear warheads and armored cars for the police to fight the riots in our cities. It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.
>>
>>79412741
What the flying fuck? That's scary as hell, where's that from?
>>
>>79419192
Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials.

It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country, it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.

And it can tell us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans.
>>
>>79410292
Every generation looked like shit at one point. Personally I would say the 70's-80's generation was the scummiest so far, but we don't remember the shit. We keep the diamonds and throw away the ash. Stupid people die young, the intelligent grow old and they instruct the new youth to not be as stupid as their own youth.

This generation is much smarter than its predecessors, especially the geniuses, but we are fooled by the internet - the source of that intelligence. The internet gave us instantaneous access to every ounce of information our civilization had to offer, but it also gave humanity instant access to our stupidity. It highlights our dimwits on a level far beyond anything before. America just had the privilege of being the first to jump in the pond, and since then it has been the center of attention.

Young people are dumb. Millennials and America are very normal in that sense, not an exception. The geniuses will stand out from the crowd and be celebrated as we move on to the next generation. The SJWs, anti-SJWs, anti-anti-SJWs, etc; they are the stupidity that will fade with the passing of time.

First off, he is pretensious asshole that thinks he knows everything about everything. Like he assumes on of shit on this random blonde chick he never met before.

The facts he provides are as cherrypicked as they can be, America is first in fuckton of things, yet he only lists 3 things, all 3 of which are negative. Honestly, more cherrypicked than arguments we have in here.

And then he goes on some goddamn nostalgia trip, about how America used to be so great, even though he is like 50 at most. What the fuck does he know? Any old man could say the same thing when he was younger, looking back at his youth. The 20 year old girl will say the same shit in 30 years. Goddamn Socrates was crying how the times have changed. Every old person does that. But you are supposed to realise you aren't special for noticing this or feeling this and just keep this shit to yourself. But he goes with his sappy rant and the movie makes it sound as if he has a point. He fucking doesn't. Not one bit.

it's sanctimonious

imagine this guy taking an innocent question and then ranting about shit that only he cares about for 3 minutes if it happened in real life. it would be extremely awkward because he's behaving like an autist. but since it's an opportunity for the writer / showrunner to soapbox his political views, it's presented in an extremely self-congratulatory way.

btw every second of this show is written this way. take a clip like >>79422206 where essentially the message is that citizen journalism is wrong, but they pepper it with a bunch of Big Bang Theory-tier jokes to look "hip" and ~soo above~ the subject matter. it's underhanded. you can imagine whoever wrote it having to periodically put his pen down so he could look in the mirror and admire himself for "enlightening the masses"
