Piccolo's power has actually kept up pretty well. It seems like the only reason he's fallen behind is because he doesn't have le special 20 transformations that Saiyans get. Otherwise (besides his merging) his base form has gotten extremely powerful over time, whereas it's mandatory for Saiyans to transform. Obviously he's still gotten outpaced regardless though. Here's a really good example of the series. They don't waste any time with useless dialogue and weird pacing. It feels natural and fun, sometimes even legitimately dramatic.

Start with Dragon Ball. It's of a higher quality than Z overall. You can look up a list of which episodes are filler and safely skip them, although the DB filler isn't bad.

If you liked it, move on to DBZ and watch up until the end of the Frieza arc.

This is where the show begins to decline in quality and were the author originally intended to end the series (until they made him create more). This is a good stopping point, however if you're enjoying it you can continue.

Make sure to watch it subbed. This is a matter of course. I'm sure /tv/ of all boards can understand that you should watch things in their native language.

I've gotten used to granny Goku while watching Super, but I'll take Sean Schemmel any day of the week, especially since he's now spent the better part of 20 years in the Goku role. Vegeta is a saiyan. He gains power by constantly being in battle, and even more so the greater he pushes himself to the brink physically.

He had no where else to go because his planet was destroyed along with his entire race. He knew Frieza was behind it but could never prove it. As long as he stayed on Frieza's good side he lived to fight another day until one day when he would get strong enough to kill Frieza himself. He played his hand too soon, but it's not like he had much of a choice given that Frieza was too close to gaining immortality. His character and story was amazing. Best out of anyone hands down.

With just DBZ, it's arguable that there's some Marvel characters who could potentially find a bullshit way around the issue, but now Goku is literally so fast, that he doesn't need time to move in order for his body to move.
He has transcended the laws of physics completely, and could punch the universe out of existence as an afterthought, since he can achieve multiple times the power necessary for doing so, as established by the characters.

Goku and Vegeta (who is basically on his level still), have effectively reached a point where the only characters even remotely capable of facing off against them are the ones who are literally breaking the fabric of reality by their very existence, like a gag comic protagonist from one of Akira Toriyama's other works, a dude who when not busy tearing holes in space and time, transcends the physical realm to become philosophical concepts, and a guy who is literally an all powerful, completely and utterly invulnerable, no-questions-asked, unstatted "You lose" kind of god, that isn't even vulnerable the way Cthulhu is. If you didn't know, you can kill Cthulhu with a nuke, but in a few minutes he'll come back, only radioactive. Thank you, table top RPGs.
